Gentle Leader good for oes?

Has anyone had any experience using a gentle leader with their sheepie? Im starting to get a sore shoulder from my puller and I was hoping a gentle leader might be the answer

I use a gentle leader for my #125 malamute mix and its WONDERFUL! He could totally take me for a walk, but he doesn't with the leader.
Works great for Maggie. She settles right down when it is on.
I use one with Marley and it's great on him .Otherwise I get pulled all over and end up with a sore shoulder .
I use it with Ru. I can't walk him without it! He is much calmer and doesn't pull at all. Pulling on a normal collar is not great for the dog's neck.
With the bits of my body that now need surgery (cheers pup) it is a great shame that Archie will not tolerate any of these things that go over his nose/jaws, he had them off on a trice either that or great clawing and pawing at his nose ensued - yes they stopped him pulling whilst it was fitted, he just sat there trying to pull it off.

I had to resort once he got it into his mind to pull, to correct him, changing the direction of the walk bring him around to my side, wait for him to settle and start off again. He now walks resonably controlled, the odd scent of a cat can make him lunge off so he still can occasionally wrench my shoulder
To be fair to him most damage he has done to me has been when off the lead and has charged my legs and made my knees bend the wrong way! :cow:

So good luck with whatever methods you adopt and work for you.
For quick potty walks Cuatro does fine with regular flat collar. But for longer walks, it's with the gentle leader, and he has no problems :)
I am a fan of Premier Pet Product's Gentle Leader. Dogs, and especially puppies need to be desensitized to it before actually going for a walk. If anybody likes, I wll be glad to post privately, or here, my Shaggepaws Gentle Leader Desensitization protocol. The Gentle Leader should be fit by a trainer or other qualified person experienced with this piece of equipment. A proper fit ensures proper use and results. A GL is a piece of equipment to be used for management, meaning, using the GL PREVENTS a dog from having the opportunity to successfully pull on lead. Equipment does not teach loose leash walking; people do. I always recommend that people work on teaching their dogs that walking at the side (placement of the reinforcement) and keeping the leash loose (no tension on the lead) means really good things for dogs (cookies, chicken, turkey etc.). For those of you taking classes or involved in training programs remember to mark (click or verbal marker) for the behavior (loose lead) and to feed (reinforce) for position. As in the beginning of teaching any skill, a high rate of reinforcement (quick and frequent reinforcement opportunities) will accelerate learning.

Collar corrections are not safe with the Gentle Leader so if you are a cross over trainer or are used to doing collar corrections, please make a special effort to refrain from snapping the leash or collar.

The Gentle Leader can present a challenge in preserving the OES head coat for those who are showing their dogs in conformation so extra care should be taken in putting it on and taking it off, and again, no collar corrections please when using the Gentle Leader.

Be careful with mats forming around the muzzle. It can cause a little friction there.
Frankie had a fit with the gentle leader. constantly throwing his head around. Our trainer/behaviorlist recommends the sen sation harness. It's wonderful. Its different than most harnesses it connects to the leash in the middle of the chest. It works for us.

Any front ring harness is good - some folks prefer the sensation and others the Easy walk from Premier - both are very good - the point is FRONT RING harness. Back ring harnesses used for carting, sledding and pulling engage opposition reflex which elicits pulling.

We use one for Inca too.. have since she was about 5 months old and became almost un-walkable with constant pulling. It certainly helps a lot, but over the years (she's nearly 3 now) she has learnt how to pull with it on too 8O .. she's just nowhere near as strong as collar only so is much more manageable.

Also, she really doesn't like it much.. she never has  She's fine when it's on but when she see it she goes to 'hide' in her cage.. which may be a good or a bad thing - least we have no crazy leaping sheepie when it comes to walk time!

Ouch!!! Painful memories flooding back to me!! 8O
LOVE THE GENTLE LEADER :D
What is very important about using any piece of equipment is fit and proper use, which includes desensitization. Make good things happen with the presentation of the Gentle Leader (chicken, cheese). Open the "cheese bar" when you have the Gentle Leader in your hand. Feed about 5 treats. Close the "cheese bar" - the cheese goes away and the Gentle Leader goes away. Do this several times a day for a week and then work up to putting the loop over the nose (not fastening it) and open the cheese bar - have the nose loop on the dog for a maximum of 2 seconds and close the cheese bar and remove the nose loop. Anytime you want to change a CER (conditioned emotional response) you need to move in very small increments.

If a dog can still pull with the Gentle Leader attached the fit is probably not correct.

just to toss my two cents in . sadie hates things that go over her face. BUT i find that if i tie the lead around my waist and clip it to her collar it saves my arms :)
I use them for both of mine- It is really great.
