Degreasing hair under the ears

Asterisk and Wendel get really waxy buildup under their ear flaps. I clean their ears regularly and pluck, but the wax seems to just hide under the ear flap and onto the hair there.

It tends to mat up because of the oils. I bathe them monthly or more depending how dirty they get, but their ears seem to get oily fairly quick.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep that portion of their coat clean and oil free? I was thinking of using corn starch, but wasn't sure if that would irritate the ear.

I think you have to step up and clean the ears more frequently. Whenever one of mine have this symptom its usually due to an ear infection.
Are you talking about the hair under the ear hole, like where the flap would lay over? I'd just cut it back a little. Owen licks Clyde's ears like crazy so I just chop most of that hair off to about 1/4 inch. You can't tell since the ear covers it.

Yep, that's the spot. I was thinking about cutting it down, too, but wasn't sure if there was a product that I could use. Asterisk has waxer ears then Wendel and it seems that that hair gets pretty gross and it mats pretty bad, too.
I'd just cut it but a scrub with a wash cloth and a bit of dish soap works wonders.
Using an ear powder after you clean the ears helps reduce build up and keeps them dry.
^^

That's what worked for me. Cutting the extra hair, Ear powder, and the TYPE of ear cleaner you use all make a difference. Pepsi's Mommy introduced me to a cleaner years ago that isn't greasy and doesn't smell ...and I haven't had problems sense!

Do you happen to know the name of the ear cleaner you use?
It's upstairs and I haven't used it in awhile ...but I'm pretty sure the name is malaseb flush (something like that). I've had the same bottle forever. I use that and follow it up with an ear powder.
I actually googled it to see if it was the name of it, and look what came up. ;)

I clip mine shorter under the ear opening too. I think it allows for better airflow.

Some of the Malaseb and DVM products by Teva Animal Health are
getting really hard to find after the FDA closed the mfr. down.

It took us some time to find a replacement for the Malaseb shampoo. :|
You can use a little cornstarch or powder to dry that extra bit of oil that might collect there.
I cut it a bit shorter, also sometimes use the thinning shear to thin it and make it look more natural. I also wash it thoroughly with more full strength shampoo, also sometimes with some liquid Ivory (dish) soap. That helps cut the grease.
Of course, plucking the ears helps too, and I use an ear cleaner/water remover after every bath too. http://www.entirelypets.com/epearclean4o.html - it works really well.
I keep a small Gatorade bottle with 1/4 Dawn dish soap and the rest water in the tub/shower for the dogs... Diane told me it was her groomer's secret weapon. It works well to degrease. I use K-9 Liquid Health ear cleaner that also seems to help prevent the ears from getting greasy... downside is that it's purple (and stains walls so don't use it in the living room  ).

This is how I handle the ear hair- http://untilyoufindme.com/Plucking-Ear-Hair-Dog2.htm Hopefully one of the pros will put together a better photo demo. If you do, please let me know? For the past couple of months I've been slowly putting together info that rescues can share with potential adopters and the general public so people can better maintain and home groom their companion OESs.

That is a FANTASTIC photo essay! I wish I saw this last year!!
If you are careful not to get too much of it onto the skin, isopropyl alcohol is excellent for getting the wax out of the hairs. I just soak a cotton wool ball with it (it evaporates really quickly so pop the lid straight back on the bottle) then give the waxy hairs a swish. You don't want it dripping though, just enough to wipe the wax away with. It's strong stuff, so use a tiny bit to begin with to make sure your dog's skin doesn't react. I use it once a week, but that would depend on the dog. I think you can get it in any chemists, get the type that has no oil in it. I get mine from ebay. It's soooooo much better than dish soap (for ear wax) in my humble opinion.
That photo essay is great. I will be printing that out tomorrow.
