So I am asking y'all in the hopes that I don't end up going out and buying every detangler that there is so to experiment with!! |

I just started to use Four Paws Magic Coat Good by tangles for dogs and puppies. It works on Frankies ears really well. He mats up like crazy. Lisa and Frankie |
If you're not showing your dog, go ahead and try the Show Sheen for the knots. If it's a little greasy, no big deal. People use Cowboy Magic on mats, too. Most of the detangling sprays aren't enough to work mats out unless you really soak the troubled area. You could also try The Stuff or Crown Royal Grooming spray, which I really like the smell of. |
I bought some of the Ice on Ice mainly to use as a sunscreen on my one dog's coat. Diluted as directed & spritzed on his coat when he went outside. The other day I got the bright idea that if I was going to that trouble I might as well groom him with the spray instead of using my regular grooming spray. NEVER AGAIN! I had just bathed him so his coat was at it's best for grooming. I used this spray & all went well. I noticed about 4 days later, when I touched his coat that it felt like he needed a bath! I had just bathed him the weekend before & my dogs generally go 6 weeks between full body baths. So I went back to using my regular grooming spray but the first time grooming him was a real chore as it seemed like my brush was dragging thru his hair & it was knotted at the very ends. So we are back to using the regular grooming spray & using the Ice on Ice only for spritzing when he goes outside. My regular grooming spray is Crown Royal Formula 3 Grooming Spray. I've used it since day 1 of acquiring my 1st show dog back in 1997. |
We use the Crown Royale #3 also. LOVE the smell too! Another thing I use is Emu Oil spray. It works well and I call it my "teflon" spray. It repels things pretty well from the coat. It also gives a natural flea and tick repellant, so I use it everytime I brush through this time of year. |
I use something with a mink oil and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE ice on ice. I think there's NO magic helper really outside of the things you've used. That's my personal opinion. It's all about just being absolutely consistent about the brushing. If it means once every 7 days or once through every few days (every dog seems to be different). I used to try 100 different conditioner sprays, but now I have 0 problems now that I don't have that 1 week where I don't brush. Sorry it's not the answer you want, but I think it's the real key |

Co-breeder handed me spray bottle of something at a show telling me to try this on a heavy duty mat. I thought, yeah, sure, whatever, more crap to put in their coats. Spritz, brush went right through it I bought a liter on the spot ( I forget what I paid, but it ain't cheap): Isle of Dogs No 61 - Grooming Spray - Detangler. It has a pretty overwhelming chemical smell (to me) and nice little warnings like only use in well ventilated area (ingredients: silicone, denatured ethanol, color, fragrance) so I don't use it for every little mat by any means. But when the big guns are needed, on it goes. I've never noticed any residual anything in the coat. Then again, I only use it in small, targeted spots anyway, so I can't swear that it has no affect on the coat. It's not quite magic, but it's the closest thing I've found. FWIW. Kristine |
Well look at that. Good to know! Will consider a switch. |
Mrs J is absolutely right about the grooming. I groomed Rufus right to the skin twice a week until he was 2.5 years old (only a few months ago) and I can honestly say the only mat he's had was about 2-3cm under his chin once. I was grooming him for 6 hours a week. Most people don't have time for that, I know I was extremely lucky to be able to. His coat is thicker and finer than a lot of sheepies I have seen, I'm down to grooming him for just 2 hours a week now that his adult coat is through I used Ice on Ice for the first time a month ago, just that one use (a light spray through most of the coat) has made grooming easier for 4 weeks. I also used White on White shampoo for the first time and it has made a vast difference in grooming. Every coat, dog, owner and lifestyle is different. That's why you need to find what works for you. |
Thanks for all the answers. Yes, nothing is going to take the place of good ol' elbow grease and making the time to do it. The ice on ice for me just seems almost like using water, unfortunately, because I have heard so many good things about this product. I just don't notice any difference in the feel of her coat. So where can I find the Crown Royale #3 at? Maybe I will try that one next. And what about the emu oil spray, where is that found? I have a feeling Tinker's grooming box is about to look like my makeup drawer!! |
Have no idea how I just ended up posting my reply as 'Guest'! Sorry! It's me though!!! |
Try Cherrybrook: http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/ ... _Formula_3 You can get the Magic Touch Formula 3 in ready-to-use form or concentrate to be mixed with water. You may also want to try their Ultimate Detangler http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/ ... ReadytoUse Both have a nice clean spicy scent. |
I ordered the Crown Royale from some random mail order - I just searched online...lol I don't have it available locally. The emu oil I get from Kenic - it is really nice. It comes in spray bottles or gallon jugs. Several of us go together, so we get the gallons. http://www.glo-marr-kenic.com/item169.htm |
I always pick up a bottle of the Crown Royale Grooming Formula 3 at dog shows. I get the concentrated form & mix it 15 parts water to 1 part product. Lasts a long time even with several dogs in coat. It can be ordered on line too. |
I have the concentrate as well. I bought the 16 oz bottle several yrs ago, and it is still over half full. |
