I made a list but it seems skimpy for someone who hasn't shopped in almost a month (well I did pick up milk last night on the way home for agility class and a pint of ice cream to share with the dogs because they worked so nicely all night) So what is on your list - what sthe oddest thing, what do you consider vital? I so need a personal shopper for groceries. |
|
Well heck.. depends on what you currently have. I am going shopping tomorrow morning (by morning I mean 4 a.m.). this will take me 2 baskets filled to the top. I go weekly, and this is what I'm out of this time. Broken down by what aisle they are in at my store. This is what's on mine salt lemon juice baking powder baking soda honey coconut cloves flour sugar b.sugar vanilla pudding mix baking muffin cups yeast cloves oregano unsalted butter salted butter oj plain yogurt mozzarella eggs cranberry juice ricotti milk eggs heavy cream deli salami deli pepperoni onions grapes green onions green beans bananas tortillas bacon bits p. butter zucchini green onions squash beets cauliflower broccoli spinach leaves apples oranges sweet potatoes lime beer soda lasagna noodles fruit bars jalapenos honeycomb cereal salsa dijon Parmesan cheese 2 black beans 2 pinto beans corn chicken thighs chicken ground beef swiffer kit glade bath cleaner paper towels toilet paper stainwash baby food joshee overnight diapers lil j socks sonicare brushes replacements benadryl loreal makeup baseball snacks eucerin lotion mac razors q-tips vaseline card for greg's bday |
how does someone run out of salt? Isn't that like something you buy once in your lifetime and when you die your kids go -WHAT the H are we supppossed to do with the almost full container of salt? But thanks - I forgot lemons and limes |
Oh and to me everything is a must. I can't be without something I want. (honest answer) I hate wanting to make something and not having it or not having enough. ETA: Oh and I can't believe I'm out of salt too!! It's been in my closet since Alaska.. Every recipe I use usually requires 1/2t of it though when baking cookies/breads |
My listS vary depending on which store I'm going to. I shop at my farmer's market for everything fresh - all produce, eggs, honey, breads, etc., my local meat market for all meats and only go to a grocery store for mostly non-perishables such as canned goods (which I don't use a lot of), juices, frozen food and staples such as rice or beans. I also shop at an organic health food store for things like yogurt, butter, snack foods, soy protein powder, etc. I left the "get all groceries in one place" movement a long time ago to get better quality, selection and price...and to support local businesses and organic growers as much as I can. Oklahoma has some of the worst grocery store options in the country, IMO. I love going to see family in TX - I relish time in their lovely grocery stores! |
Sure - you had to remind me! I left my grocery list at home on the fridge. My plan was to get groceries tonight after work, as we are about in the same place as Kerry. Todd got milk last night at the gas station, but forgot bread. No more buns, so I had to bring the last crust to eat my burger on for lunch at work! |
Shoot... Josh does all the grocery shopping. The only housework Josh DOES enjoy is grocery shopping and cooking. In fact, he doesn't like me to come along grocery shopping because then shopping 'takes too long'. Which, I might add, is asinine, because I'll go get the produce while he gets the protein. I think he just likes to go himself. The REST of the shopping I do. I go to the pet stores for food and treats; I recently had to go get a new pooper scooper because mine broke. I get all the toiletries, detergents, cleaning supplies, grass seed, flowers, gasoline for the lawn mower, etc. |
well Dawn you are free to play along Dan does a lot of picking up on th eway home - I never have time. But I need to shop for everything and I mean at three or four different stores including the home supply store for mulch. I did get apples at the farmers market at work this week (along with a Basil plant) but the apples were mushy. This time of year the supermarket is the only place to get decent produce. |

DH likes to grocery shop with me.......no quiet time for me now that he's retired. Well, he's good at following me around the store....too good, no zipping up for one item, he has to be on my heels. However, I turn him loose in the produce section. He's happy there. Unfortunately the bakery is right there and if they have those ten cake pieces for $10 I know they will find their way into the basket and freezer. All I can think of is Crisco icing...... I feel the grocery list is tatooed on my butt.....well, I guess it is Same things week after week: OJ, egg whites, skim milk, yogurt, fish, yawn............. Recently they reorganized the store......oh that's fun. Can't find a darn thing. Must take paper and pencil and write down new arrangement so I can do like Mrs. J and arrange list to the store once again. |
I used to think a jar of peanut butter lasted a year, then I moved in with Dave. Now we buy a big jar at least once a month. Our must haves are: taco supplies (flour torillas, tomatoes, avocados, black beans or veggie refried, cheese, sour cream) soy milk and cereal spaghetti/marinara Sometimes I feel bad that I don't cook for Dave, but then I remember he doesn't cook for me and I feel bad for myself instead! I want a chef! |
This is my list for tomorrow. Two stores. Not much since I'm going on VACATION Tuesday!!! Eggs Sour cream Washing soda Chicken stock Juice Small zip-top baggies Pop Chips Case of bottled water Cookies Carrots Sausage links Luna bars Popcorn The junk food is for vacay..... Periodically I keep a "spending log" and other than mortgage, car and horse payments, I spend the most on food. I spend about $50 a week, for a single person. And that doesn't include the lunches I eat at the hospital cafeteria. And I always feel like there's no food in the house. |

I shop European and always stop at the grocery. I never have a list. If the pup has food and her treats and I have some fresh fruit and vegetables in the bowl, I'm fine. |
This post made me chuckle, since I had to put together a list this week for groceries for myself to use during the 2 weeks my husband (who normally does all of the cooking and grocery shopping) is away working in the bush. Scott also had to put together an unusual shopping list for himself, since the villages he is going to have no stores or restaurants, and he was required to provide his own food. My list: Cheese (a lot!) bread soda coffee (TONS!) 1/2 & 1/2 boxed mac n' cheese frozen chicken pot pies pasta V8 corn chips and salsa frozen chicken patties assorted veggies, to go on my chicken sandwiches Scott's list (highly "traditional" Alaskan bush food...seriously!) Spam pilot bread instant soup cups canned tuna peanut butter |
I'm at home. Lucky I logged on, or I would have forgotten the list again! Pill Pockets Cockatiel food Charcoal briquets Rain guage Lighter fluid cheese Lettuce potatoes Potato salad Grilling meat Chicken Fingers Bread Buns Egg noodles Cr of mushroom soup Chips- both kinds pudding vegetable oil sugar Hamburger Helper (Todd's emergency food) decongestant We have a magnetized notepad that hangs on the fridge. If you use something up - write it down. Amazingly - it actually works! |

Dh does most of the shopping...and most of the eating. I can't remember the last time I went to the store with a list. I just wander the isles and pick what looks good. This usually doesn't add up to much because I really don't eat that much. The only time I "plan" is when people are coming over. |
well I did it - filled out the list went shopping and spent $350 I usually don't shop with a list - but we were out of most everything except soup - and I stopped eating that after my stomach flu in January. Of course I also forgot liquid dishsoap and snadwhich thins. I am not sure I can venture near a store again soon |
This is my list--IF I can walk today. Threw my back out lifting Maxie Paws into the CRV. OJ Bacon Sandwich Thins Pickled Beets Ground Sirloin Pork Chops Green Onions Cauliflower Spring Mix Greens Vinegar Diet Dew Oatmeal New Mop Head Tide Downy Dawn Shave Cream ( John) Paper Towels BD wrapping paper Heath Bar for me |
OMG!!! LOL about buying salt once in a lifetime... We have a small cylindrical plastic shaker with a sheepie on it... It must be 10 years old! LOL I think it's only used when making mashed potatoes... |
Mrs. J: I don't envy you your grocery shopping trip! I remember those days when my boys were growing up. I used to think they had hollow legs! When I first went back to work, I worked in a grocery store for a number of years. It was nice because I worked in the meat dept. & could get great deals on the meat (like steaks they were going to pull & grind into ground beef etc.) I got at way cheaper prices. And everyday when I left the store, I bought what we were running out of at home. So I never really had to do a massive grocery shopping at once like I did when the boys were younger. Now it is just Jim & me & we keep a list going & who ever thinks they will be near the store that day grabs it on their way out the door in the morning. My list yesterday included: grapes lettuce strawberries 15 cans of no salt green beans (for Mariah!) |
Teenaged boys seem to never stop eating.... my youngest is currently growing about an inch a month, not exaggerating, we actually measured LOL The list is usually something like this: cereal oatmeal bread milk margarine peanut butter jam pancake mix syrup cheese slices cheese (block) ham hotdogs kraft dinner fries pizza pockets (gross) potatoes rice salad stuff ground beef tomato paste pasta chicken breasts roast beef all kinds of veggies, whatever is on sale, peppers, mushrooms, carrots, zucchini, broccoli etc stuff to make muffins, they're cheap and easy for the kids to take to school tons of fruit, usually bananas and apples plus whatever else is on sale coffee tea laundry detergent dishwasher detergent soap toothpaste cat food cat litter lysol bleach I buy dog food at our local farm supply store so it's not on the same list. Stuff like toilet paper, shampoo and conditioner etc somewhere else too.... We go through 4 liters of milk and a loaf of bread every day and usually have to get some other stupid thing I forgot if I'm making something specific. |

Sometimes I have a third trip going to and from the grocery store with my cart b/c one of my carts is filled with nothing but diapers!!! My mom works at a grocery store on a military base as a manager, and she has vendors give her coupons in mass amounts. So that helps! I am totally wore out. I ran this morning, showered, went to store and zoomed through SUPER fast, and came back to make coffee cake and homemade donuts (i cheated and just fried biscuits and dunked in powdered cinnamon sugar) ...and then straight to t-ball game (and we just got back). It's 9:30 a.m.!!! |

Laurel, what is pilot bread? I've heard of pilot crackers on the east coast but I don't know what those are either. If anyone cares, the magnetized shopping pad on my fridge has the AC/DC band logo on it..... |
Paula O. wrote: Laurel, what is pilot bread? I've heard of pilot crackers on the east coast but I don't know what those are either. They're big *HARD*, tasteless crackers. They last forever under any conditions, so they are very handy for certain things, like traveling to the middle of nowhere |
Todd shopped while I was at work. No Pill Pockets, cockatiel food, rain guage, and my chips (tostados) - but he got his (potato chips)... He said he got "more" - so I'm sure I'll find it eventually. He is a bad (buys too much) shopper! |
Joan is going on a little trip for a few days so she attempted to buy out the store to fill the fridge for me. Heaven forbid I should have to actually go to the store myself to buy a morsel of food. The store was unfazed. As she entered the store with that particular look of determination on her face, I could hear the manager say "Buy all you want, we'll bring in more." As she left he was calling his boss to tell her what a great day they had. On the other hand I did not get off so lucky. The fridge is packed with food and now I must conquer the food challenge. I am channeling my inner Adam Richman and will be victorious in the end. |
I start by planning the weeks meals out, remember I take care of my mom at my home and she gets three meals a day at home. So I plan all meals and snacks out for the 7 day week. Then, using the menu I make the shopping list, I make four squares, I lable them MEAT, PRODUCE, DAIRY, MISC. and then I review the menu and start filling in what I need to buy. This week I have Shrimp Louie Salad on Tuesday and Cheese Ravioli on Wednesday, so the French bread I bought will be used for both meals as well as the salad. My husband lost his job in December 2009 so our budget is really tight. We cook all meals at home and I bring my lunch and breakfast to work every day, I also have a one cup coffee maker on my desk at work and make a fresh cup of coffee when ever I want. I work down town and lunch and coffee options are abundant, so I really have to be diligent with myself and not get talked into lunch out.... I use the crock pot at home a couple times a week and use inexpensive cuts of meat to make really good dinners. Tonight I will come home to beef stew that has been cooking in the crock pot all day, it will greet me the minute I walk in the front door... |
