And it was! Just have to keep an eye on it! How do they get these! ? |

Poor Maizie! How is it treated? |
They're generally nothing to be concerned about -- two of mine have had hernias, one lived with it for 13 years and the other is currently 6 - no problems, just a little bump. If it's particularly large they may choose to do a quick surgery to close it up, but it's a very simple procedure. |
Heart had one and when she went into be spayed, the vet fixed it.. |
It is just a weak spot in the abdominal wall - the smooth muscle that covers the abdomen. They need watching. Mostly they are just an annoyance. But, they can herniate a section of bowel through them. That is a strangulated bowel and not good. It causes an obstruction, and the tight squeeze cuts off circulation to that part of the intestines and it can die off. Bad - then you get a necrotic bowel, and even can cause a hole in it and have bowel contents leaking into the body cavity..... This doesn't usually happen, but the risk is always there. The good news is that you would see it and have time to get her in. Bad for dogs that don't get a lot of human attention or running of hands over them if they are real hairy. There are grades of seriousness in hernias, so the action (or no action) depends on that. And often if a dog with a small one needs a surgery later, they will take care of it at that time. |
Poor Maizie, give her a hug from us. |
