is this an alpha thing? Its also really cute when he sits on my lap! or when he tries at least! hes so big and heavy! at 4 months he was 47lbs. and he will be 6 in two weeks so hes got to be bigger than that! But have any of you had your dog give you their bottoms like that? and he wont do it just with me! with all of us! |

It's a totally normal OES thing. Not dominance or anything sinister....just a happy sheepdog snuggling in for attentiona and love. Chewie does it to those he likes. It is funny when we are on a therapy dog visit. 1st the residents are upset that he does it to them - most people are used to getting a face or a kiss. When I explain that it means he likes them, you should hear them bragging about how Chewie sat on their feet! Here he is a few years ago at a visit - this is a staff person.... When he really is feeling goofy, it is a rear sit with a head thrown up and back |
Ditto about everything Dawn said...my 'lap sitter' is Pearl...I can't sit on the floor without her reversing her tusch on my lap!!! And she relaxes which means ALL her weight is on me!!! uggggghhhhh!!!! |
Both of my guys have loved to back into position for a good butt rub. |
Yep Tiggy too. She loves to jump on us when we're lying on the bed or the couch and reverse up and sit on our heads. We take it as an "I love you lots" Someone posted on here in the past that sheepie's need a warning beep for reversing. |
Thanks everyone! I feel loved now! It has been a few interesting months getting used to Ziggy and trying to understand him. He is really fun! We love him very much, and now i guess he loves us too!! Thanks! |
With no tail the stimulation is gone back there, so just special people get to rub bums. You are among the special few. MO gives me her bum but though she loves her Daddy, he still gets the front end so she can longingly gaze at him. We are both blessed with out own special end of MO. |
Funny, but it is true what Dawn said.... at first people are offended by it but then they love it because they know the dog likes them. I have to laugh at all my extended family members who know the butt rub routine. |
Scratch that butt! |
SheepieBoss wrote: With no tail the stimulation is gone back there, so just special people get to rub bums. You are among the special few. . Are you saying if they had a tail they would pet their own rear end? Actually, many tailed dogs do this too. But few have the ample bum of our guys, so not as noticable. Last night at herding a new person approached. Sybil, who is convinced every human was put on this earth to love her, immediately tried to jump up on her. Dog savvy person, so she made her sit for attention, which she did and then immediately flipped around, sat on the woman's foot and then leaned on her till she fell over. Sybil, not the woman I'd like to say it means you're special in her case, but she's pretty indiscriminant about where she flings and parks her bum. And for REALLY special people (AKA Sunny) she will jump up (so proud), put her paws on her shoulders and then periodically look at me, grinning - "She loves me, she loves me! Woohoo!" But she will also do the back up and sit thing, and, yes, Dawn, the head back grin is reserved for really special people Anyway, herding: there were also two border collies chained to the fence watching the action and they also flung their butts at the woman to be scritched, but, let's face it, a BC doesn't have much of a butt and the tail kind of gets in the way. Kristine |
Tiggy has a tail and she still backs up. It just makes it harder for us to dodge a mouthful of sheepie hair. Head back and a big grin is also reserved for special people especially Wayne and he loves it. She can get most anything she wants from him that way. Tiggy also believes humans exist to love her and the closer she can get her face to theirs the better. A lady stopped her bike and asked if she could pat her yesterday. Tiggy resisted for all of oh 10 secs and then jumped on her and her bike. |
Oh, thanks for the laugh, Mim!!! I need to go back to their pedigrees again and compare They could be long lost sisters. On some plane. Some plane most of us probably don't even want to know about Kristine |
Yes the twilight zone plane. Cue the music |
It's time for a butt scratch! Gigi does it all the time! She also likes to go thru my legs and stand with her head behind me while I scratch the top of her butt above the tail. |
summer does this all the while and loves having her bum smacked |
so does that mean its extra special when Bella gets in bed and wants to sit on my head |

Between the legs with head behind me is Simon's favorite. That way he can get all the butt rubbing I can give. Gotta be careful though, he thinks all people want him between their legs and darn near knocks them on their kiester or take out the knees. |
KTB wrote: summer does this all the while and loves having her bum smacked haha...panda does a similar thing...races between brians legs and then hops her back legs up, so she can get a double pat..one on each side of her bum.... she is also one who needs the reverse beeper noise on her....she backs up to me for the special nubbin' rubbin' and smile. |
I think it means "I'm in your side."or"I will agree with all your opinion".Haha~ I also think that dogs like to give the different positions to different people. For example, when my father at home,Grubby will sit besides him,and if my father go to work,Grubby will sit besides me,I think maybe I'm the second position in her mind:) Generally speaking, Dogs are very clearly to know everyone who treat them well or not well. They are so clever! |
It is a calming signal http://www.canis.no/rugaas/onearticle.php?artid=1 |
It means, "Hey, I like you. I have a bum. Wanna scratch it?" Be honoured... |
