I've been contemplating shaving Dancer down again for a while, because I am not going to show her until next year, as I want to concentrate on showing Sky for this year. Dancer became very matted around her neck from the dogs playing, and partly due to me using a round nylon collar that is supposed to help prevent matting, which continutally gets wrapped in her fur. She also had extensive matting in her back end from on and off diarreah because of the dogs stealing each others food. Anyway, to make a long story slightly shorter, I decided to go ahead and make her nekkid. LOL She looks adorable, I love this look almost as much as full coat. She looks like a little greyhound. LOL I took pics, but this camera that I borrowed cannot upload pics to my computer, it has to be my hubby's computer because it only works with WinXP not Win98. So, whenever he comes home, I will be able to post pics.... lol.... who knows how long that will be, but someday! I took pics at various stages, the funniest ones being when I had finished her head and nothing else. Then I did her back, and she looked like a schnauzer. LOL Then I did everything and left the feet til last and she had pom pom feet. Anyway, she is LOVING being nekkid. She looks so happy, and is so playful.... hilarious. I also took pics of the pile of fur on the floor, which my daughter arranged in such a way that it looked like another dog on the floor. I'm covered in hair, and those itty bitty hairs are itchy! Off to the showers... |

I can't wait to see those pictures They are so cute when they're shaved with just a lions head. |
No I shaved her head first, I can't stand the look with fur on the head only. I think it looks ridiculous...lol... I love them ALL nekkid.... |
We don't leave the head long, our breeder cut Beau down one time and took a break after starting on the rest of him. He was a lionhead for only a couple of hours. |
Pepsi came back with a Lion Head...not too bad, but I thought it was awful.
I used my clippers and cut his face down to 3/4 inch..the groomer had already blended it.. really all I had to do was get rid of the beard. It looks so much better. Other than his head he looked fabulous when I picked him up. Willowsprite.. Pepsi had heavy matting under his collar. A special choker designed not to get hair dangled in it... Instead it tangles the hair beneath it. |
The only dog I've seen that looks adorable with the lion head look is wiazardmerlin's Merlin. He really did look cute with it....lol...
I'm annoyed at this collar. It is the one that was recommended to prevent matting, and in my opinion it made it a whole lot worse. |
Now that I think of it, I think Lil Walty's Walter looked cute with it too....
lol |
My girl's about to be nekkid too. And she does indeed love the feeling!! She adores standing in the sprinklers in the summer letting the water pound on her hide.......these are those 80 foot throw sprinklers......a bit of force behind them. I also like having three dogs in one: the nekkid greyhound, the short haired plush animal, and the long haired mop.

I love the word nekkid I was raised in Alabama, thats was how we said it when I was growing up for real. As well as Jeet yet; for did you eat yet. Of course I'm much more sophisticated now he he |
I love it! LOL |
Can't wait to see Dancer's nekkid pictures! Whenever Drez is cut down, she gets really frisky, too. I think she just gets so hot with a long coat and then - freedom!!
I love the comment about 3 dogs in one. Never thought of it that way, but it definitely fits! Chris |
I can't wait to see the pictures too. She looked so cute last time. We shaved Bella a week ago but she has the furry head look. Not sure if I like it but my son hates it so it stays. Just to drive him nuts. lol

Hi there,
I'm new to your site and I'm hoping to find some resources. I live in Los Angeles and I can't seem to find a groomer that knows much about our dogs. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! |
Hi Lori,
There are LOTS of OES in Southern California. Although this is not a sheepdog rescue request, perhaps Jane Dempsey of the SC OES rescue can recommend someone for you? Here's the website and there's an email address on it, too. http://oesrescue.com/ If you can wait until October, they have a rescue parade and you can meet a lot of different people with OES from the area and I'm sure they'd be more than willing to make some recommendations for you! Best wishes! Cathy |
P.S. In the meantime, Carl and Michele Lindon have put together a wonderful grooming demonstration and it can be found on this site if you want to give it a try! : )
http://www.oes.org/html/sheepdog_grooming.html They did such a great job....I wish they made house calls Cathy |

Maddie visited a new groomer yesterday and they told me they cut her down to about 1 - 1 1/2" and so I was expecting what I consider a puppy cut. Imagine my shock when I picked her up and she was shaved down w/ a big lion head! I've seen sheepies in pictures like this before but wasn't expecting to pick up a naked Maddie. I'm just curious. How long does it take for the coat to grow back? Dump question, I know. But, at least to get back to more of a 1" - 1 1/2." I'm sort of new to this as it will be a year in May that we've rescued Maddie. Thanks everyone! |
It usually grows back at about an inch a month....
Did the groomer say why they did that? Was it just too difficult to clip to a puppy cut? |
The groomer told me that she had be matted in a few areas (arm pits and back hind legs). Both were areas that I had pointed out when I dropped her off to begin with. She doesn't allow me to work those areas like I need to. They told me that it was best to shave her down or else she would have an uneven coat. I just wish they had called me to ask my opinion before they did it. Especially since it's not what we had discussed when I dropped Maddie off.
Thanks for your reply!!! |
Hi Maddies Mom,
The groomer should have given you a courtesy call to inform you she recommended shaving Maddie. I found out in our area many groomers will not take a sheepdog in full coat. One groomer said it was their policy to shave all OES, because "they are too difficult and do not like being groomed". I kept researching and found a groomer who has experience with OES, and enjoys working with them. So you might want to keep looking for someone who has worked with the breed and will respect and work with you.... Since we are going into spring, Maddie will be more comfortable in a shorter cut, bet she looks cute ! Best wishes... |
It's tough to find a good groomer! I agree a courtesy call would have been in order. Maddie's got to feel strange. Normally, the rain didn't bother her and she could just walk around for what seemed like hours. Now, she puts her puffy head down, walks outside and turns right back around. I think I now need to invest in a raincoat |
You are right, it is hard to find a good groomer ! We drive
40 minutes to our groomer, but its worth it! We lost our battle with the dreaded matts last month, and had him shaved. Its been about a month and his fur is about 1 inch. Its growing back beautifully. Maddies will grow back fast too. We are staying with a puppy cut for spring/summer. How about Maddie ?? I think they look cute either way. My first OES was more comfortable with a shorter coat for summer. www.doversaddlery.com Dover Saddlery has some cute dog coats-there is one by Bakers which is a nice plaid. |
Thanks I will check it out. I think a puppy cut may be in order for the summer - great point. I just read a thread about those dreaded ticks and now I am more freaked than ever. It will be much easier to find those little nasty bugs with a shorter "do." Thanks for the support! |
We came home last week during the evening-surprise!!
A deer jumped from our lawn in front of the garage and trotted off into our pasture. He must have journeyed from the woods across the street, then was startled. Instead of continuing on to the pasture, he made a detour up the lawn which is fenced in and on a hill. We love their visits to the pasture, but this was too close ! We are going to try Irish spring soap-placed around to deter. We learned of this in a wildlife magazine, they don't like the smell. We'll let you know if it works !!(If it doesn't they will be some sparkling clean deer in our pasture !!) |
I am going to be braving Milos first spring haircut tomorrow. I haven't seen him in a couple of monthes (he lives with my dad) and he was a full blown fuzzball when I was last up there. Then on Thursday he has to go for his checkup...gonna be a busy two days. |
hi everyone this is my first posting as i only joined this morning i am from the uk and i am a dog groomer and it really upsets me that your groomer did not even think to pick up the phone to explain why she did that i would never clip down a dog without the owners consent my clients with there oes would of gone mad at me and rightly so did you say anything to here? we clip most of oes down on the owners request but would not not without there permission, one thing it WILL GROW BACK THOUGH! i also agree with the other posting it is very hard to find a groomer you can trust and much more important one your dogs trust and grow to love in the end as if you do need to take your dog to the groomers on a regular occassion the dog needs to like the person it is going to be groomed by.well at least she will be nice and cool for summer lol. |
