Ear Licking

Bella constantly licks Simon's ears! And I mean all the time! It goes on and on...lick, lick, lick, noisily. Now he is shaking his head like his ears bother him. I use the earwash remedy recommended in the forum for yeast on a regular basis, and more often if I think it's necessary, but I have to wonder if Bella's constant licking isn't contributing to his problem. His ears look clean and he was recently groomed, all the hairs plucked. But the way he is shaking his head tells me there is a problem. I'll get him to the vet on Monday. But I have to ask...has anyone had one of their sheepies do that? It almost seems obsessive, though Simon seems to absolutely love it when she does it, and when she stops he will rub his head against the couch and his leg does this funny tap, tap, tap thing....I know I'm not explaining it well, but it is weird.

My Dalmo used to lick Tiggy's ears obsessively, very annoying to listen to all the slurping!
I asked my vet about it and he said it didnt matter, it would just keep her ears clean 8O

I worry though that if the dalmo has a yeast infection on his feet that I dont know about that;after he licks them he'd transfer it to Tig's ears. Having said that she never gets ear infections although he's given up licking her ears now he finds the other end much more appealing.

Maybe Simon was already getting an ear infection and that's why Bella was licking.
Lily will lick Baloos ears anytime he will let her... He always holds real still for her to do it too. :| He's not had an ear infection so far. I do keep an eye on it though, and he doesn't let her do it obsessively-- so maybe that's why. He gets to a point where he's like "Enough already!" and will move away from her.
Somewhere I've heard ear licking is pack behavior, the dominant one licks ears as a calming action. The receiver seems to enjoy it, maybe it is calming in dogdom.

Maybe the excessive is they then "taste" something that they feel shouldn't be there: ear cleaner, early infection so they go overboard.

As for the rubbing and leg tap, around here's that's "tickle" stuff. When a particularly sensitive section is stimulated, the "tickle" motions begin.

This is what I've been told too. Melody, who was definitely the dominant one around here, used to do this to all the dogs here. I never really had much problem with any infection but then I kept a close eye on the ears too when grooming. She also used to lick Isaac's eyes. The down side is that it will turn the white hair pink in those areas.
Chewie isn't a licker of himself very often - mostly just the boy dog "cleaning up".
He does however lick the other dogs. Mostly around the mouth and ears. He loves grooming Harley, our senior faster basset the most - and Harley loves it right back. :)
Owen does it to Clyde constantly. Clyde seems to really enjoy it or he's too lazy to get up and walk away. He's never had an infection but the hair under his left ear flap will be forever orangey-pink.
Mine lay around cleaning each other all the time. It seems to be rather maternal. Belle's forever cleaning Mad and Liz' faces, Sybil has to scrub her brother's face twice a day  In fact, she's almost a wee bit obsessive about it. When I get tired of listening to her slurp as I'm trying to go to sleep at night I stick my bare feet in her way and she licks them instead

It really does seem to be just another part of pack behavior.

acckk !

Chewie licks Todd's feet too, and it drives me nuts! My feet are so ticklish, I never could take that. 8O
He even licks them when he's barefoot and standing still.....
You mean he doesn't meet you as you step out of the shower to lick your legs? 8O

We used to joke about Marnie's dogs having a foot fetish. Guess I should have warned you.

Melody is the only one I've had ever do that! Used to drive me nuts! But it kept her quite in a motel room if you let her lick a human's feet. 8O

No leg licking now. I guess I have foster Harley to thank for that. He and Chewie both are laying right outside the tub most days. I have to make sure I look (and blind me w/o my glasses!) before I step, so I can find a spot of bath mat to step on, not a dog...and usually Chewie is grooming on him and keeping himself occupied.

Our one and only bathroom is about the size of your main floor bath (sustitute a bath for the shower) and it is quite the feat in the morning! It's like an obstacle course
