We found out she was epileptic and she had a few seizures while in foster care. She also ate a stuffed animal and had to have surgery to get it removed. Throughout foster she was incredibly sweet and loving, very gentle little dog who loves people and other dogs. Andrea took great care of her. We were really worried that we wouldn't be able to find her a home because she had a few strikes against her, most notably her breed and the epilepsy. Somehow we found a grad student who was studying epilepsy (in humans) who expressed interest. Eventually Pinecone (yes, the dog's name is Pinecone!) was adopted by this woman and we were all certain it was the perfect match. This was about 6 months ago, so Andrea got in contact with the adopter to ask how things were going. She found out the epilepsy had progressed and that Pinecone's medication wasn't working. She had $2000k+ in medical bills in just 6 months. She expressed worry that if things continued at that rate she wouldn't be able to afford Pinecone. So we decided to raise some money for her medical care. We decided to cover half of the vet bills from the preceding 6 months and to help her with future medication costs if needed. We tried a "chip-in" fundraiser for the first time to see if people would help us with the costs. We set the goal at $1000 and the time limit for 30 days. Well, less than 48 hours later and we have exceeded our goal. 37 people contributed and left kind comments for her adopter. Every time the ticker went up I teared up. Adoptions and foster homes have been really slow lately so this outpouring of support for an epileptic dog that was thrown out with the trash was overwhelming. I'm still on a high from it! It's an amazing feeling to be part of an organization that supports people and dogs that need it, and to be supported by such a wonderful community. This rescue is the best thing I've ever done, and I love seeing physical manifestations of all our hard work and passion. Anyway that's my dose of optimism for the day. For everyone else doing rescue, check out www.chipin.com it's such a cool way to raise money. I think it helps that people can see the goal and the progression towards it. |

That is REALLY wonderful, thanks for sharing! |
Wow, what a great story. A great rescue, a great rescue group, a great community. ... and what a great idea/site that ChipIn.com is! |
What a heartwarming story! That woman is to be commended for not turning Pinecone in earlier because as a grad student, I'm sure her funds were stretched. The generosity of people when faced with a dilemma always amazes me! |
Great story! |
Thanks Ron! Glad you all liked the story. We got a little local press from our efforts which was pretty cool. I'm off to another fundraiser! |
