To lift the leg or not?

When your male sheepie goes pee does he lift a leg or not? So far of the two male sheepies I have met neither lifts, is this a sheepie thing?

Our boy, Baloo, just started lifting his leg to go this past fall (say november time frame) and he will be 3 this July. He only lifts when we are out on walks. At home in his own yard... he squats still.

I think he wants to look good out in public. at home he's just lazy. Kinda like me... at home I'm in sweats or my lay about the house clothes-- but if I go someplace I'll get dressed. Why not be comfy at home?
Most males have to see another male lift in order for the brain to click in on this. I have 2 males at home (father & son). Most of the time they hike their leg. But other times it's just too much bother & they squat. Same thing with the males we have in show homes & take to shows. It's probably a 50/50 thing.
My boy doesn't squat like the girls but just kind of stretches out a bit when he pees at home for the most part, but on walks he may mark. This morning we were in the back 40 when we came across this very tall pole. He decided to lift his leg so high I was taking bets with his sisters as to whether or not he'd fall over. Maybe a coyote peed there first. Must have been a tall coyote if so!!!

Like Marilyn said, they usually seem to have to see another male lift his leg in order to get the idea.

Either way, I have to say he's a very clean pee-er. Just as well for him. Once upon a time I swore I'd never own a male dog because many of them pee on themselves and then stink most of the time. In his case if anything he's cleaner than the girls. No idea why. Not complaining

Chewie pees by leg lifting and squats - it just depends on the location... 8)
He lives with male dogs, but a basset that lifts his leg in reality is no different than a female....as the pee still hits the ground, not the object the leg is lifted for. Talk about wasted effort!! :cow:
I guess I have to say mine really do sorta stretch out rather than squat..... when they don't lift. Isaac is the laziest now that he's 12 years old. His idea of lifting his leg is walking out in the dog run to the wooden board that's like a baseboard (to hold the gravel in), lifting his leg enough to prop it on the wood & then he goes! Oh well, I guess he's allowed to do most anything now that he's this age
Kody will be 2 in July and he kinda stretches out now, but has never attempted to actually hike his leg. I have to laugh because I questioned the same thing early on, especially when one time he was squating and peeing and he peed straight out under his chin but directly through his front legs hitting about a foot in front of him...funniest thing I ever saw! Luckily he didn't get any of his fur wet
Harry has done all of the above things.
- stretched out squat
- over three years old before he lifted his leg for the first time
- surprised me that he hasn't toppled over because his leg is so high
- predominantly squats at home
- sometimes squats or sometimes lifts when out, just depends
- has peed straight through his front legs many times
- unfortunately has gone through phases where his aim seems to get the back of his front legs
Syd tried a few days ago as girls here are in heat, first time and we laughed heaps, after several tries on his walk, yes he is on an exercise routine to take his mind off females at the moment, he nearly fell over each time and the look on his face was priceless. Prefer they squat and being in full coat neater no peeing or dribbling all over the insides of his back legs and now he smells like a mens urinal. Bath time happening real soon with stinky man.

Go back to squatting Syd PALEEEASE
My dalmo really stretches out at home to pee on the concrete, I think because he hates it spraying up on his legs but he'll cock his leg when he's out on walks.
Kenzie started lifting his leg frequently when he was about 9 months old although there had been very odd instances from about 6 months. Now he lifts it at anything and everything when we are out walking. I think it might have a sexual element to it as he seems to do it where other dogs have been, as some sort of marker (bit like a cat spaying).

Nick :)
Willy has never lifted his leg, just leans forward and pees.
Chauncey is pretty much a squatter at home, and a leg lifter on a walk in fact is ambidexterous.
Langley has been lifting his leg a lot. What sucks is when he try to walks away and he isn't done. Lots of leg baths
