Archie will not start earting his meals - Unless he can have a good resource guard growl at us first. Put his food out and he is good he waits, even paws please etc, then when we say he can have it, he'll stand near it but not eat it, so we stand near him, he has a good deep rumbling grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and then he tucks in, with no effort to protect his food, he'll let you take it away and put it back etc, he just has got it into his head that meals start with a good deep rumbling grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. If you don't do this he'll leave his food all day until we go through this. What a crazy hound |

Quote: If you don't do this he'll leave his food all day until we go through this. He's got his routine. Lily actually does this too. I give Baloo his food first, he starts to eat. She gives a good growl as I turn back to scoop out her food and then wiggles her stump as I pour it into her bowl. The she eats. I always thought of it as her "bout time I get fed" grumpy quote to me. It's def not a serious or mean growl, & it's not directed "to" anyone or even Baloo (who is usually happily chomping away when she does it). |
Did Archie just started this resendly? ... maybe it's just a new thing he adopted and he loves now to play this "game" before he starts eating!! Quite funny really!!??!! |
We have kept the dogs separate for meals for as long as I can remember - 30+ years. Easier on us when they are getting different food. And Riley, the pig, will finish off any leftovers, which she doesn't need. In the last two years, Bailey won't eat until we let Riley out of her room. She growls at Riley and wolfs down her food. We can move/remove her food (we put it right back) and Riley can sit right next to her, without any change in behavior. I think it is a learned behavior, rather than resource guarding. And I don't know how we taught it to her. |
Archie may just be saying thanks for the great supper mum |
