Hair in Pads

Just wanted to pass on to be sure to shave the hair from between the paw pads. Bowie, my male, was going crazy yesterday. Like a mad dog. Jumping and pawing at his feet, trying to bite them, etc. He wouldn't really let me get close to the foot and became extremely agitated. Just obviously uncomfortable.

We had a regular shceduled vet appointment today and I asked to Doc to take a look. Maybe he had a thorn or something in there...Well, low and behold he shaved out a HUGE knot of hair covered in mud and dirt that was all the way up in his pad. Poor baby...

If you do not know how to shave the paw pads, and don't attmpt it unless someonw shows you how ( I think we have a great pictorial here on this site), go to your Vet and they will do it. Or a groomer. Either way, be sure to do it as it does cause some substantial discomfort for the dog.

plus it keeps the house MUCH CLEANER!!! an added plus
I use curved round ended small scissors to get into Archies pad hair, try to keep them as short as possible, which would be easier if he didn't have the most ticklish feet 8O I have had a few wacks I can tell you!
^^^^^
Me too!!
Tiggy kicks like a mule when I trim her feet.
Pads of feet get shaved here weekly. If you don't keep up with it they can get mats in there & it is painful  to get them out even if you know what you're doing.
I just use a ten blade and shave them out, never had a problem re hurting their feet doing it that way.
I used to trim it with scissors but that's a pain and more chance of knicking them that way.
I've always shaved my dogs pads, followed by scissoring anything I miss. I can't stand the amount of water it can collect and bring in.
Ru gets agitated even with a small amount of hair in there. I trim it right back every couple of weeks. I've been kicked plenty of times too!
I actually thought I had trimmed the hair but low and behold, it was stuck way deep. I find it extremely difficult to do and I'm very nervous about cutting the pad or the skin between so I let my vet do it for me.

It is best to use clippers. Less chance of doing any cutting of skin that way. But you need to get under any little mats too. We all have certain things we don't like doing & leave to the vet. But I find the more dogs I have, the more I learn to do to save money! (Says she who is ready for another dematting session!) :(
I use a cheap little ConairPet battery operated palm clipper and rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeables seem to provide a longer run time. Palm clippers just seem to be a
little easier to maneuver between the pads.

How on earth do you trim BETWEEN the pads with clippers and say there is less chance of cutting the skin, especially the webs?

With the small scissor blades flat to the skin surface I would have thought that there was much less chance of nicking their skin than probing in between the pads with clippers, obviously not?
The photo essay 6girls posted above is really good!
my best advice for when using scisors in the feet ...( and anywhere really ) is make sure you can ALWAYS see both ends of the scisors . ... if you can see the tips of them the chance of accidently causing a nic are MUCH MUCH Smaller :) ...

Have you ever held the clippers right to the palm of your hand? It won't cut you....

Try it against the web between your fingers, that is what I would worry about with MR TICKLE (going anywhere near his feet changes his name!)
I don't see why you would clip that anyway... but no, clippers don't cut that skin either. Basically you should just shave between the large pads, and trim the hair around the foot flush with the ground.
