Afraid to go outside?

I'm currently housetraining my new pup. We're using puppy potty pad things which are working really well.... maybe a little too well. She seems to only want to go on them. I'll take her out when I know she needs to go and she'll simply hold it and wait till we get back inside. She's seems to have really good bladder control as I've been out with her for over an hour and still no joy. I've tried bringing a pad out for her to go on, but that hasn't worked.

Also in terms of pooping she's fine at night, she sleeps in my room and scratches the door when she wants to out for a poo but during the day she just slinks off into another room to do it. Even when I catch her before she goes and take her out she still wont do it outside and I know she really needs to go.

Any ideas?

How old is your pup?

The only advise I can really give is: patience and persistence. Asterisk was my first puppy and I learned a lot from her potty training experience. I read that for every month of age the puppy is you put an hour to the time. So if your puppy is two months old, bring him/her out every two hours. As your puppy ages, you can increase the time between.

Your puppy may not always need to go when you bring him/her outside, but the puppy should get used to going outside. It's also helpful to put a name to the business your puppy is doing.

For Asterisk my word for urination was "potty". Now, if I say "Asterisk, go potty" she will instantly pee. For defecation, I used the term "poopy".

Good luck!
Going out to potty is a learned skill.
Mine learn by example, as I have other dogs. They go out in the dog yard and do their business. With puppies, I watch them and the second they pee or poop, they get a verbal reward and praise (touch, hugs).

It is neccessary to teach them to potty on a lead - I just discovered I had neglected that with our latest pup lab Biscuit. I took him with Chewie to a weight pull, and he needed to potty on lead. The 1st day it took all day to pee - the 2nd day he got it and took like maybe 5 minutes!
I'm not a potty pad fan for larger breed dogs. They grow so fast, and soon the amount of pee and poop is NOT something you want in the house to deal with. Better to not use them at all, as you have to untrain them from the pad to use another spot and texture of surface. :( Not helpful now, but good for future use..... :?
Friends with toy breeds use them fine, but the little pees and poops are a lot better suited to the pads.

For most with a lone puppy, going outside on a lead is the best. Say your potty command and walk around in the area you want them to use until they go. Doing this after they eat or drink a bunch is best - you know it went in, it will come out! After they go - big party!! Then you play and have fun. That teaches them not to mess around when let out - that they get to play and have fun after they go.

I also close off any extra rooms that I can. These open floor plan houses make it hard to house train! Have them in an area you can visually see at all times. Take them out after eating, drinking, napping and every 1-2 hours when they are little. Anytime they are walking around or looking restless - go out. ON lead, reward the potty, then play.
It is kind of tedious, but it really works. :D
She's about 10 weeks atm.

How should I start using these potty words? Do I say them when she's going and then hopefully she'll remember next time? How does the association begin?

Also, I think I may be a little stuck with the pads now. I watch her most of the time, so they're only really for emergencies like if she doesn't manage to wake me at night, or if I'm in the shower.

Thanks for the advice!

Right, you'll say the "key" word as she's doing her business. I just kept saying "go potty" AS Asterisk was peeing. It takes time, so be patient and keep saying the words. I think it took a number of weeks before the bulb finally went off for my girl.

Some dogs take awhile to totally potty break, too. Asterisk was four months when we were accident free. Up to that point we had accidents maybe once or twice weekly.

As far as the pads go... where do you have them? You could start to slowly move them towards the door while you're doing your training. Even if she's having a hard transition from pad to no pad, you may even have to eventually move the pad along the floor till it's eventually outside. She may just be associating the pad with a certain place, rather than the pad itself.
