Eggbert does this too It is almost certainly a "nervous" habit with him, since I really notice him doing it more if he's stressed, sick or upset because he hasn't gotten something he wants Pillows, blankets, or the arm or leg of any handy person sitting near him are his usual targets. I always tell him "No" after 2 or 3 licks, since the habit seems to feed on itself and get worse if we just let him lick a pillow, or whatever. We can also always tell if he's really anxious, if the licking turns into "nibbling" with his very front teeth. |
Barney does this. He'll lick the carpet and leaves the grossest wet spot that somehow I always manage to step on. |
Before we got Oscar's allergies, IBD, and yeast issues under control, he was a licker. His favorite "lollipops" were his front legs, his paw pads, and carpeting. Once we got all of his health issues solved, he has mostly stopped licking all together. Now he occasionally tries to lick his front legs, and it seems to be a self-soothing behavior. We do redirect him though, as we do not need hot spots or any other type of skin problem to crop up from his obsessive attention. Laurie |
Mulligan likes to lick carpets... |
Mine go mad with Licking Hubbys legs after he has been for a run, I think they like sweaty salty things Now icecream or frozen yoghurt use to be licked now gulped down in one go. Syd likes to lick the tiles on the floor too dont know wether that is the cool feeling or some meagre remmanent of a crumb on the floor, probably the second one as he is a Oinker |
Mine, too. Licks me awake in the morning, then starts on the other dogs and the cats if they'll let him. At night, before he retires to his sleeping spot in the bathroom, sometimes he'll lick his paws and/or the bedspread until it's soaked. Wish I knew why and how to stop him, especially when he's obsessively licking himself. |
Lily's a licker. She'll lick anything. I think her brain is attached directly to her tongue. I've even seen her lick "near" something without actually touching it. Like she's licking air!! Baloo-- he just licks himself |
sheepiegail wrote: does anyone's sheepies lick objects??? Right after Patch came to live with me at the townhouse I had new carpet installed upstairs in the hallway and bedrooms (the first floor was all wood). 4 1/2 years later I bought this house, and later sold the townhouse. The carpet in my bedroom had about 12 white spots on it from her licking - it looked like old carpeting. Now she has moved to licking "her" room where her bed is that I use as an office - that is the only room I didn't have the carpet replaced and am glad. How could licking hair and dirt be enjoyable???? |
Kirby loves to lick. In fact that is probably his most annoying habit, and the only behavior we are really working on. He licks his paws, and sometimes the bedding - not too big of a deal. But he loves people and loves to show his love, but licking everyone. We keep working on it, but has not been able to stop him. Any suggestions would be helpful. |
We have a licker too! Maggie licks EVERYTHING!!!!! A couple of things we have been told about it: - It is a submissive action when they lick you ALL the time - From the vet, sometimes they are in need of a 'supplement' in their diet - Sometimes they are alerting you that something is wrong (if they are excessively licking themselves or other dogs) - They are nuts, it is annoying and they will never completely stop Since we have gotten Quigley, she now has lots of things to lick...including his ears and his eyes. There are even many times we have to tell them to stop making out because they (really it is Maggie) is licking and licking and licking his mouth. GROSS!!!!!! It is a bit much. The worst is the butt-licking. Good-god! I know that it is a sign of a problem, but really, GET OUT OF THERE! Nothing good comes out of there and I don't want your 'kisses' after your face has been in your butt! |
Yeah, each one is a licker. MO of course with her arthritic paw......she always has an orange foot. Glacier is hung up on the kitchen cabinets and floor. Little Merry Maid apparently is helping me clean. Jack licks the bedroom doors if he's right beside them......bored, nervous or reminding me they haven't been dusted for awhile. Harry licks me! Any lotion I put on........he's the baracuda coming in to remove it from my hands, arms, lets. I have to cover up quickly |
Chauncey is a lover & always up for a big sloppy kiss. But as for licking, he never licks objects, but had been licking his forelegs ALOT. GlycoFlex III has all but solved that. When he was having a bad day & the licking was grating on my nerves, I put one of my long sleeved T-shirts on him....works like a charm. Same for trying to get to stitches with he was a puppy. Alot of you will remember Mr. Pretty Pink Pant's Instead of the collar that drove us all to the edge, I put him into a pair of my pink boxer sleep pants again worked really well....Chauncey was more secure in his masculinity with that than Bobby |
haha... as i'm reading this wolfgang has just started licking the floor!!! he likes to lick our old futon too and will always lick my knees when i get home from a run. yum! xx |
Archie licks our two cats They are not best pleased! |
I am new to this so I am just looking around. But, I have to say this is really funny reading that my dog is not the only sheepdog who does this. I notice it most when he is eating. He will eat a little then come up to me while I am sitting on the couch and lick my pant leg. I have caught him licking the chair a few times too! Weird! |
