Training the husband to train the dog

When we had Mopsy, Tim had no patience to work with her if she was being difficult. Like when somebody came to the door she would bark and go nuts. I found that she settled down when I made her part of the process. His answer was to lock her into the bedroom whenever a repairman came over.

Well you can teach an old husband new tricks.

Currently I am asking Harry to sit and wait whenever we exit the house. Usually Tim does not have patience for stuff in the morning. But Harry is his "trash" buddy and so I am rather amazed that Tim is asking him to sit and giving him his release word before they take out the trash.

I must admit I am both stunned and pleased that hubby is making the effort. :)
He is almost doing the process correctly.

Good for you (and Tim!!)

He is making progress...

And soon will be better than Todd, who knows what to do but chooses not to lots of the time (this is the guy who I actually met at dog training classes).....geez. men
And these discussions are when I remember why I'm happy I'm single

Then again, it does leave me with no one to blame when my dogs are bad... :lmt:

Last night in OBEDIENCE class Sybil greeted an OES friend by jumping up on her, giving her a quick kiss mid leap, and almost knocking her out. So proud. :P

Oh and its why you can't travel without all the dogs  I tell everyone i can't afford the kennel bill that would come with a divorce :P

The best thing I ever did was enroll Dan in obedience class :) :) :)

Does he sit on command?
You think you could train Josh? I'm still struggling with him to put his socks in the hamper because Asterisk likes to eat half of it. Needless to say, we are running out of socks.
I hear husband training is difficult.

I am so happy you kept plugging away until you saw some spark of success.... ..how often did you practice???

What 'treats' we involved in getting the correct response?? Or did you use the clicker method????

Please tell me you didn't use ANY negative reinforcement..I hear husbands do not react well to this type of training.

For all of us here, maybe you could give us a minihusbandtraining seminar online.. I, for one would be interested!!!!

And finally, can you apply this behavior to other areas ??? :D :D
Val - your family and friends better look out - you are full of it today!!

Me too!!!

Lots of things I'd like to train. Oh you know stuff like dont leave your glasses on the coffee table or Tiggy will eat them.

My experience is negative reinforcement can provoke aggressive behaviour, so I try to remember to avoid it.

Sorry folks got a message about another post having intervened and checking messages so I resubmitted. No idea what was going on :cow:
 Hasn't happened here yet. I turn on Dog Whisperer only to see DH snoozing thru the whole thing. IF his eyes are open, they are glazed, just admiring the dog, not the message. He still insists on talking to the dogs, explaining his commands.
