We're in the process of trying to finish up setting up our house (2+ years later!). We'll be selling in about 2 years, so it has to be buyer-friendly enough to sell, but I still want something that I would like in the meantime. My current focus is the kitchen. It has cherry cabinets (a browner cherry, though, not too red), medium color wood floors, stainless appliances and a granite counter that is called Venetian Gold. It is a gold base with flecks of beige and cream and gray running through. We're getting a tile backsplash put in. It's a stacked stone, very neutral, with flecks of various colors running through. Suggestions? |

Pictures would help! My 1st thought is to decide on if you want a warm or cool tone in the paint color. It sounds like all the sufaces except the appliances are warm toned (predominantly). Decide if more warm or cool would give you the look you like...then pick a color (maybe in a different level of color) as one of the colors already in your kitchen that will complement what you have. |
Where's Darcy???? This is right up her alley. |
I know...I'm waiting for Darcy I guess one thing I'm wondering is what most people like in their kitchens. I was watching some HGTV type show yesterday and there were various couples going into houses and being like, Beige! Boring! or oooh, Beige, how calming. So I guess there's no magic color that will please everyone, but I'm trying to get an idea as to what lots of people might like (without compromising too much on my own taste) I'll see if I can find pictures. |
With the colors you mentioned, I would do a nice bright Chartreuse green, with a high saturation. It would really pop and gives the kitchen a contemporary look. The nice thing is that you can use bowls of fruit for accents, like Granny Smith Apples or Pears. Just a thought! |
Okay, here are some pictures. First of all, ignore all the mess. It doesn't always look like that. 2nd, the baby is much older now. Also, all the space below the cabinets will have the neutral/cream-based stacked stone tile, so the paint is really not going to be all that much. I tried to find pictures that showed the layout as well as the colors of the room. It's open to the family room (but no shared walls) and that's painted a soft olive green/gray. This is looking to the right of the first picture And here's how it looks as it relates to the rest of the house. Where should the paint color stop? On the wall with the carrot painting? On the wall with the iron thing? |
Well...I can tell you what I'd do, but I'm pretty certain it wouldn't be either your style -or- very re-sell friendly As we talked about in another thread, I'm a vivid color kinda girl! I would probably be thinking about 2-3 shades of a warm-ish green, with maybe even a bit of Capt. Danger's chartreuse tossed in. these sorts of greens: this this this and this for instance. Better yet, though...what types of colors do you like? What colors make you feel good? A person should be happy in their kitchen, and so I think the main thing is to figure out what color/s you really would enjoy, then coming up with a specific shade of it that goes with your woods, etc. As far as where to stop...Id at least go as far as the "carrot" wall. |
those cabinets and granite are almost exactly what I had in my kitchen in my old house and very similar to what I have now except those cabinets are slightly more chocolate. We went with a historical color from Schrwin Williams. It is a soft yellow and not overly bright. I can look the name up tonight and take some pics of our old kitchen if you like (my friend bought our old house) let me know |
I'd suggest to take a look at Behr's "Classic Taupe". It's not beige. It's more of a coffee color and it has some saturation. Another color I like is Benjamin Moore's "Wheeling Neutral". Some people might think it leans more toward the beige side but it's more of a warm gray. It's not light, nor is it dark. It will go great with natural stone colors and wood tones. The other nice thing about these colors is they're not offensive. You'd be hard pressed to find a buyer who was turned off by these. "Classic Taupe" is available as a bigger paint swatch at Home Depot. When you look at the "Wheeling Neutral" at your local Benjamin Moore retailer, make sure to ask them if you can borrow the sheet to take home with you. They have biig books of all their colors with some swatches as big as 8x11. Those bigger swatches make it MUCH more easy to visualize the color in your space. If they balk at letting you borrow one sheet, offer to give them a deposit. If they still balk, find another B-M retailer that will. Do yourself a favor and check these colors out. |
taaa daaa...here i am !! sorry so late... i think a nice sage green would look wonderful, especially if you dont want to go a neutral color...stop at the carrot painting.... or you could go with a darker version of the gold that is in the granite.....still stop at the painting |
I didn't offer any suggestions as I used to have a pink kitchen...which I recently painted to a warm grey. Yet, my ugly outdated kitchen makes me a green eyed monster when I view your gorgeous one. <<if I win the lotto I'm flying Darcy and Panda to come visit. Good luck with your kitchen! |
In our area, beige sells better. I've even been told by a carpet guy that this is the beige capital of the US. LOL But it does adapt to well to different decorating styes. |
