Wow, that is great!! Glad there are people out there who can do that. I can't wait for the pics and stories. |
Congratulations! Can't wait to see puppy pictures! |
Our "Manners I" trainer taught basic commands to all dogs using visual cues rather than verbal commands. None of the dogs were deaf but they would have been taught the same way. Look for a trainer who uses this method. Deafdogs.org is a great resource: http://www.deafdogs.org/ as well as lots of people here on the forum. |
That is great advice about the "Manners l" training method. I remember that when Daphne was in her obedience class years ago, the trainer stressed the importance of using signals along w/our voice commands. She also told us that all dogs responded well to the signals. I hope that I can find that type of class in this area. |
I can't wait to see the pics! Congratulations! |

MB is the half way mark between Beth and I!!! I was thinking that new doggy park... Let us know when you are coming! Hope it isn't too hot too fast! |
Yes, we will have to have a play date! Hearing dogs, seeing dogs, shaved dogs, drooling dogs-All are welcome to come play!!! |
Congratulations to you! |
Congratulations on your new baby! |
Congrats on your new little princess |
Congrats!! Looking forward to the pics and stories of Daphne and her new sister. |
Congrats on your new bundle of sheepdog joy! Our Oscar is bilaterally deaf. Before we brought him home, I got the book "Living with a Deaf Dog" by Susan Cope Becker, and it was the best purchase I ever made. It gave me so many things to think about that I hadn't considered. I am currently writing a book about our experiences with Oscar. I thought it was close to completion until I joined a writer's workshop recently and realized that what I have, in essence, is an outline, not quite a book yet. So I am still plugging away...... Please PM me if you have any questions. Laurie |
The countdown begins! It is almost time! |
Saturday morning is the magic day! I have so many friends that want to meet my sweet girl. We are invited to a dinner party down the street Saturday night and the new baby is invited because they know that I can't leave her! Hopefully I will figure out this new way to post pictures on the forum! |
We expect pics of the party bright and early Sunday morning! Her aunties are waiting!! |
So....you should be home about now!!! How did it go?? |
CONGRATS!! Can't wait to see pics! |
I have just had a chance to come up for air and give a quick report. We left for our new baby around 7:45 yesterday morning and arrived back in South Carolina at around 3:00. I have renamed the little one Lilly. I think that sounds beautiful w/Daphne. It was LOVE at first sight w/Lilly. It is going okay w/Daphne. They are working out their relationship but no blood has been drawn! (just growls from Daphne, but not all of the time.) They walk great together and I know that they will be best buds soon. Potty training is not going well but I know that Lilly has got to get used to her new routine. I will post pictures ASAP! I hope that I can figure out the new way to do it! |
Older dogs feel less cornered or forced to interact if you let them play outdoors... it allows for the adult to either run away or interact. I'd let the adult drag a lead so you can get quick control if necessary. Be ready to step. As for peeing in the house... that will improve if as you set up a schedule and with consistency. Have you ever raised a puppy? Feed probably 3 times a day... take her out on a leash to a designated area in the yard and quietly tell her to do her business. No business, then back into the house and try again later. Take her out when- She first awakens from a nap. Immediately after eating or drinking. A potty break in the middle of play. If you see any sniffing, circling, starting to roach her back. I also take her out just before crating her... I crate train the first 6 months. You may need to get up in the middle of the night for the first few weeks to take her out to potty too. Though the house has most likely been puppy proofed now, do not allow her to have full run of the house unless you're supervising. This is how you teach her limits. If you can't supervise, she goes to a puppy proof room or crate. I puppy proof the kitchen because it's a busier area of the house and the puppy gets more interaction. You can also tether her to you so you can keep her close by and supervise her behavior. As she gets more reliable, she gets more freedom. She's adorable! |
Thank you so much for the advice 6 Girls. Believe me I need it! I am either crating her or keeping her on a leash beside me in the house. She just sometimes goes w/o giving me much warning. I am trying to take her out frequently. She seems to be doing better today. I just didn't get hardly any sleep w/her crying and getting up w/her in the middle of the night. I'm sure that we will get through it but it isn't easy. Lilly is a good girl and you are right, she just needs to get on schedule. |
I LOVE this picture! I just want to bury my nose into her soft fur and shower her with kisses! |
Awww so sweet.. and she even came with her own copy of Good Housekeeping magazine.... |
Quote: I just didn't get hardly any sleep w/her crying and getting up w/her in the middle of the night. Puppies learn really quick what works It's hard to do but you may need to ignore this attention seeking behavior... as long as she doesn't have anything wrong with her or doesn't have to potty. It can take time for her to learn you won't jump up every time she cries. She's lovely... a good thing too when she's causing you loss of sleep. |
How is Miss Lilly doing??? I am sure you are worn out... those puppy days will pass!~ |
WOW, I have not been on the forum for days and ya'll know that is not like me! My husband took Lilly w/him to my son's soccer practice this morning so I have a little time. I had a big party for Daphne's 5th birthday a couple of days ago. I planned this before I knew of Lilly coming into our life. It is hard to clean the house while trying to potty train a little one! I have party pictures to post. They are so CUTE! Lilly and Daphne are doing awesome. Daphne actually tried to play w/Lilly today while my husband and I were walking them this morning. There are still a few growls and jealousy issues going on but nothing major. Lilly's crate is downstairs now so I'm getting more rest! Thanks again for all of your comments and advice. I need them! |
well i see they love the couch already so happy for you such a sweety |
Welcome Lilly! Maggie says HI! |
Welcome Lily!! I love this photo of the two of them. Tiggy is jealous when we pet Rastus and he was with us first. She rushes up and shoves the wigglebutt between him and us and barks at him. He doesnt like it when she barks he has sensitive ears. |
Aren't they the cutest?? I am happy Daphne is doing so well with Lilly.... Hopefully, Lilly will remember this when she grows into her big girl pants!! |
Awww she is beautiful, congratulations. I speak from experience when I say be prepared for the tight bond you will have, you are her ears, she will depend on you tenfold, she will communicate through her eyes, trust me you will understand her needs and wants. Just one tip, when she is sleeping and obviously dosent hear you approach, to avoid startling her just gently stroke her to let her know you are there when you pass by. Good luck you will be rewarded tenfold. Debsx |
I just wanted to give everyone an update on my baby. Things could not going any better now. I had a very rough couple of days while I was trying to discipline the little stubborn one. I was convinced that I was a total failure in dog training and that this little girl would do much better w/a more experienced person. A very special thanks to Donner and Oscar's Mom for reaching out to me and all of your comments-I know that I can do it. We are settling into our routines. The only thing I want is more sleep but this shall pass. Lilly and Daphne are a complete joy! They were sitting shaggy butt to shaggy butt a little while ago outside. I wish that I had had my camera. Again-thanks to all of you for your encouragement, advice etc. I would be lost w/o all of your support. |
Thanks for posting an update. So glad to hear that you are settling in with the new little one. My hats off to you for giving Lily a great home. |
