No, that's not true. Lots of times we shave down puppies to get rid of puppy coat. If you shave at this age is doesn't mean that adult coat will necessarily come in at this point but you'd be dealing with a lot less grooming of matting, softer coat. Being a hybrid, I can't speak with authority on what to expect with the coat. |
Yep, it's Ok to shave or scissors your puppy into a shorter coat Please join and post pictures too! |
I also have a OES mix. Mine is mixed with some kind of collie, border or bearded maybe? He is also getting to the the point where I have to try and brush him almost every day so that his legs don't mat. My problem is that we live in Oregon, and since its raining and he's getting wet everyday, the tangles and matting see to be getting worse. I think his coat is starting to change, but I'm not sure because I only have a vague idea what that really means. If you shave of cut your pups hair, will you let me know how it goes. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet... Thanks! |
After you cut a puppy and the hair grows back in, a lot of people think that the hair is different because the hair was cut but, even if you didn't cut it, the hair would've changed to the new texture anyway. |
I have two OES and I shave them early spring yearly. I TRY to shoot for early spring but it has been working out at late winter. It gets super wet here and the matts become too much to handle. When you're puppy is younger the coat changes can be a struggle. The coat is softer and seems to matt just by blowing on it. I think you'll be okay to shave. My dogs are very spritely now that we have shaved them. |
Simon had his first hair cut when he was 9 months old. He was getting long and I had a hard time to try to keep the mats away. My thoughts were to keep him in a puppy cut to make it easier to groom. We went from this to this Right now both my boys are a little longer and grooming is not as easy. I plan to get them both cut in May back to a puppy cut. |
Thank you all for your messages! I hope to get Gracie cut this coming weekend. I posted 10 pictures to the "puppy album" because I couldn't figure out how to create my own album - how do I create my own album? And how do I make a profile picture? When I click on "My Profile" i get an error KellyO. |
My 5 year old and I just cut our 5 month old puppy's hair. It looked choppy at first, but it was lots of fun. We used kiddie safety scissors and then went back through with a thinning shear from our local beauty supply. I found a cute puppy cut on youtube, under Goldenrai, a video of a sheepdog from Japan. |

Chows are a breed that should not be shaved. Best is to have access for the pup to a cool area, fans or AC. |
We got kenny cut at 9 months |
six weeks? No way! He is just barely past newborn. Keep that dog out of the sun, and hopefully inside! Puppies have a hard enough time trying to keep body temperature regulated before you start trying to turn them into sun fried meat. Make sure the dog has plenty of water, full shade and when he's older, a little children's pool to cool off in. Our subsitutute vet shaves her chow, but the dog is an adult and then is kept indoors as much as possible to avoid sunburn. Chows are not good desert/heat dogs. Since dogs don't sweat except through their paws, panting is normal cooling method. |
