If you have a heavy chewer... and I mean heavy chewer, ...I use these and they can't chew through them. Only ones that last in our house, but if your dog isn't a serious chewer... he may find them bland. Galileo Bone - Souper, nylabone double action, nylabone durable chew souper, big chews for big dogs |
No He has never wanted anything to do with any kind of nylabone. Lisa and Frankie |
Unless your dog is used to raw marrow bones, I wouldn't use them with his history of tummy and stool problems. They have ALOT of fat. I scoop out as much as the marrow as I can, trim off the fat and boil a few minutes. I use super large marrow bones - not the small rib ones, etc. But again, due to my two's tummy issues, I scoop out most of the marrow inside. You might also look at the natural dear antlers. They are EXPENSIVE but last through many hours of chewing. Just be sure to get the correct size - which for us is the largest there is. Have you ever tried the everlasting treat ball? We have those two and they seem to play with it a long while. But my younger one figured out how to pop out the treat ball so now we need to watch her! |
In all the nylabone type bones I've purchased over the years.....only one was used.......once. One toothmark. I refused to feed rawhide after having it brought back up in various forms. For bones, it's the largest shank or femur end I can find, raw, to be chewed outside. Without bones, they'd shred the firewood...not a great idea. Or they'd chew up new Rubbermain buckets...that was fun. Friends who feed dogs a semi raw diet give their dogs RMB...raw meaty bones once a week...often neck bones or back bones that can be completely chewed up and swallowed. Seems to satify their chew needs. If your pup is teething, find something you can freeze or at least chill.....they have them in the toy section. The cold helps numb the gums. |
I bought the nylabone ring for Hudson (he can break/tear apart anything) and he loved it. We have three in the house. He wouldn't touch a traditional shaped nylabone. Rudy walked into our house, and within an hour had discovered the ring, and it was instant love. We don't do chews/rawhides. No luck here with tummies. I gave Hudson one of those busybone kinda thingies (dentabone or something) and it resulted in vomiting, a very messy bum, a bad case of dehydration, and an almost 600 dollar vet stay (included fluids and two nights of staying there). |
I'm a raw feeder and Marley has chicken wings ,lamb and pork ribs and chicken ,lamb necks.Keep away from weight bearing bones as they can crack teeth |
I might suggest the ONLY raw hides we use are the ones that are one piece and then rolled so there are no loose pieces stuck in between. Wholesome Hide I believe they are called and I get mine from www.petextras.com. The Whole Dog Journal wrote them up as the ONLY raw hide they recommend... |
ashley makes a good point, sheepies and others should be watched while having rawhides as they will swallow or attempt to swallow large pieces they chew off. if you aren't there? well, needn't go there. |
I'm not sure if these count but I like to bring mine to see the local butcher and see if he can give them some fresh bones. The big puppy dog eyes work a treat! |
I usually buy Chauncey the large smoked beef femur " knuckles". Our local Food Lion has the best selection of smoked dog bones. They are very large but we still keep an eye on him when he has it. |
