Stomach problems, diarrhea etc

I am British and live in Peru. We have a 9 month old OES dog, and he always seems to be ill. I know that the streets here are not as clean as back home, and that I need to keep my eye on him always, as he may be tucking into something he shouldn't. I want to get a feel from other readers about what experiences you have had, and if this is quite normal or not?

We go for maybe 2 weeks at time and then there is another problem. Is this normal or should I be more worried?

Let me know!

We travel a lot with our dogs, and have had frequent run ins with tummy troubles while in unfamiliar areas. Part of our problem has definitely been caused by "grazing", but also from bad water (dogs can get Giardia) and heat. I'm not sure what the weather in Peru is like this time of year, but our dogs seem particularly susceptible to heat, even in a short coat.

I'd get him checked out by a vet, though, just in case there is an ongoing stomach problem. Our vet has checked our dogs out several times, suspecting (and I know I'm going to mis-spell this) Gastinitis(?) Gastritis(?)
I would get him throughly checked by a vet for any possible parasites. I know when I travel I have problems with drinking different water. Is bottled water available? or water filter system for your tap water? Do you feed raw and posibly where you are the meat isn't as "clean" as it should be? Or even if you feed kibble, perhaps the formula is different in different countries causing his stomach to be in a constant process of change?

I don't travel outside of the U.S much so maybe the other world travlers can send more suggestions.
Parasites could definitely be a culprit. Have the vet run a sample and see if they find anything. That would be an easy fast fix to deal with first before exploring other issues. Good luck!
We keep him on a diet of dry Pedigree Chum mix, am not too sure where its made, but its the real deal.

With regards to water we used to give him bottle water, other than being expensive, we were told that this doesn't give him the chance get accoustomed to the water, and if on the odd occation someone gives him tap water, or he drinks some rain water then it shouldn't affect him.

There are some ex-pats (Americans - I miight add) that drink the tap water stright...and they swear by it. (Wouldn't do it myself though!).

How often do you recommend worming tablets for an OES, the vets here seem to have a diffrerent views on this.....

Thanks for all your help......
Water wise...I think you can mix their tap water with the bottled water, then slowly get them used to the tap water. Just doing it quickly can cause stomach upset - even for humans! Slowly mix a little tap, more bottled...then more tap, a little bottled...you know what I mean...

Deworming...Need input from others. My pup had some trouble and we used panacur. Did you leave a regular Vet who knew your dogs in Britan? Maybe you can contact them for some advise??? I don't know much about Peru...If dogs are not thought as highly as they are here in the States, the vets there may not be so sympathetic...Hope I don't insult anyone. I think the Americans are known for treating their dogs/pets as humans and part of the family and not sure if that's a world wide phenomenen...I know in some countries, dogs are not thought very highly of...I am merely suggesting if you ahve a contact in Britan, he/she may be able to advice you more accurately knowing the culture of Peru and the vet care expected there.
What about worming tablets? How frequent?

At the moment, we are giving him one tablet every two months, for a 10 month old dog.

????? Help appreciated.
While parasites was my first thought, the second was a food allergy. Maybe the grain in the kibble is the culprit. If it is an allergy and it turns out to be something found in most kibble, such as corn, soy or wheat, you may end up making your own dog meals.

I'm not sure what sort of worming you are doing...but when we had a worm problem, the med.s were short term. Our vet had us bring in a fecal sample, it was tested, and then we were given some specific medicine for the type of worms he had (tapeworms). I think we gave it to him for a few weeks, at most, and the problem was gone.
I think the worm treatment is Panacur. A digusting powder you add to the food for maybe three days in a row. Good for a whole gambit of worms...parasites are another story.
I worm my dogs once a year with Panacur. I get it in the liquid form & I give a dosage according to weight once a day for 3 days in a row.
