How do you take the temp?
At the ER they asked, how did you know she had a fever. I said, I took it...they were shocked...am I the only one who takes their dogs temp? I use a human flexible tip rectal thermoter....Anyone???? |

Wouldn't be without a doggy thermometer... though it IS clearly labeled "DOG" and kept with the dog stuff. So there is no mix up there especially where the dog one has been  Amazing the people that dont know how to take a dogs temperature or where to put it to take there temp. You cant say to them open your mouth and say Arrrrhhhh.  |
Rectal temps - done it with people too!!!!   Yes, dogs and sheep too. |
| I think lots of people are too nervous or squeamish or dont have the right thermometer. My vet taught me how to express anal glands a couple of years ago as my dalmo gets an impacted gland regularly. The vet is very proud of the fact that I am the 3rd client he has taught apparently its some sort of record, as most people just wont do butts. I grew up in farming country so maybe that helped. |
| Had to laugh when you all wrote "clearly labled dog" so not to mix up My 83 year old Dad lives with us and I can only imagine his reaction if I told him he just used the doggy thermoeter I know hos to express anal glands as well. My first sheepie needed help with that all the time. Luckily, so far with these two I let the Vet do only when he feels necessary. My older sheepie won't let me near his butt so I was thinking of getting one of those thermometers that usese a lazer light or something and takes the mtemp from a short distance away? Anyway ever see or use that? I think I saw it in a catalog called In the Company of Dogs... |
| Mim if mine ever need anal glands squeezed your the girl Only needed done once on one of mine and was so glad to pay the vet to do it, left the room fast as he proceeded to SQUEEZE I have to laugh too, pity we cant say, "Say Arrrh, stick your tongue out and place the thermometre in the mouth" instead we have to shove it in the outlet pipe. Hence doggie thermometre is "CLEARLY" Marked DOG!!!. I like the digital one, wait a few seconds hoping your dog wont sit down at that time and Bingo nice read out as to what the temp is. |

| For those who might be reading this and thinking they will attempt to take their own dog's temp with a rectal thermoter....NEVER use a glass "old fashion" mercury based thermometer. The chances of it breaking or other problems are high. And that is then a BIG problem Only use a digital, preferably flexible, thermoter and use alot of vaseline for insertion, be sure to hold the thermo also so it doesn't get "sucked" in... I didn't want my post to get people thinking hey I should try to take my dog's temp or express the anal glands. Both are difficult tasks for some dogs and some dogs can get hurt in the process. Have your vet show you how to do it and if you can;t, leave it to the Vet... |
| I was wondering after reading this post, do they make ear thermometers for dogs like they do for kids? That would be cool, sooo easy. |

| I actually did see one for the ear...and another that was lazer or something that you hold a short distance from the tummy and it takes the temp...not sure if any of these work... |

I think that it is a good idea to know how to take your pets temps. I have routinely taken my horses temp when I thought that they were acting a little off and and vet was happy to have that info so she had a better idea of what to expect when she got there. Colic which is similar to bloat can come on fast and knowing that she is running a temp along with the symptoms seems to get the vet to respond that much faster. It is fairly easy to do and not as messy or  uncomfortable as you might imagine with the soft flexible thermometers. |
