If you are going to walk 2 at a time, I suggest a prong collar for each one & a coupler. They tend to correct each other then. And you have 1 hand for the lead & another if you need to grab a dog |
I was going to say prong as well - but I never tried them with the coupler. I also do the two hands approach. |
I usually do use a coupler. But I like to use to leads occasionally on the walks so they can do their potty (with some privacy) . I don't have problems walking them they are really good they walk beside me or behind. I use this http://www.premier.com/View.aspx?page=dogs/products/behavior/easywalk/productdescription But he just cannot control his little brain. God help us if someone runs by I rather have them separate and teach him to not go for people. Than attached to Laika. I actually would like to catch him in the act so I can show him it is wrong. He just doesn't seem to have got the idea that it is wrong to nip still. I had family over and we were in the yard and he flies by trying to nip usually arms and bums. He is better if we stick together but anyone move outside of the circle boom fly by. I don't get a lot of visitors where I live so I don't usually have him lose to see him act like this. Never realized how nuts he can be with the nipping. I am looking forward to a class in May that I am taking both dogs; it is a socializing class within town walking and going to locations. |

I wonder if it might help to set up a sort of "controlled" scenario...have people you know walk or run past you so that you can correct the behavior you know may happen, without having to worry about an upset stranger |

See if I can get some people at work to help me out at lunch. The coupler does work great might just have to use that all the time stop with the two leads. |
I don't know if you watch or even get Animal Planet up there but , on "Its me or the Dog" , which I love, They do show the senerio situation. That is a good idea. Also on the last show they showed people coming over to someones house and they had a doberman and a Jack russle , two mean and hyper dogs. They showed they had people coming over and dropping a toy as soon as they walked in with a treat. This showed they were nice people. It really just sounds like your dog just wants to play, they need signals on when it is time to play and when it is time to walk and when it is time just to chill out. I have also heard people who use the " Leave it " command and this might help with people on walks and when people come over , praise and treats go along way. Traci |
