Does anyone else collect Blythe dolls?

I love toys. I have a huge, forever growing collection, of vinyl art toys but in the last year, I've become obsessed with Blythe dolls. I started buying the petite ones because I wasn't ready to spend that kind of money on the big ones. (Here's a few recent pictures if you don't know what they are: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21839088@N ... 455409864/) I'm just learning how to work with lighting along with a good camera so I'm getting better but I'm not trying to pass these off as great yet-- it's just fun!

I just recently took the plunge (and major investment) in the full size dolls and I have two on the way from Thailand as we speak. I way more excited than and adult should be about dolls. I'm mostly into them for photographic purposes but I really can't explain the obsession of wanting more and more of them, not to mention all the clothes and accessories available!

Since we're mostly a group of women, I wondered if anyone else shared my obsession.

I've never heard of them. I saw what they look like, but what's the deal with them...why are they special? Are they just old or do they represent something? Just curious? You don't seem like a doll kind of girl :P
I hear you on obsession! Though, mine isn't with Blythe dolls. I have the entire collection of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail dolls. Including the Knight of Ni (which they only made 1000 of)! I am a bit embarrassed to admit that my dolls set me back $500. But they came straight from the manufacturer and they are still in their boxes. My five knights are all first edition, I still want to get the second addition that is a muddied edition.

I know I'm a big kid, I have a Nintendo controller shaped messenger bag. When people comment on it, I usually blurt out that I have the matching tattoo.

They're not all old. There's actually about 12 new ones out each year but they have been around for a long time. I don't know, I just really like them. I love how they photograph and they're amazingly expressive for being inanimate. Their eyes move so you can get a lot of expressions from that alone. They have cool faces and you can do a lot of work in customizing them, too. They have kind of a haunting innocence about them, which, I guess is what draws me to them. Some people think they're really creepy. I think you're either WAY into them or you don't get it at all-- there's no in between.

You're right though, I'm not normally a dolly kind of girl but this is the exception. My mom is a doll collector and when my sister started seeing the dolls in my house and office she was like "Oh no, you're turning into mom."

Lol. I knowwwww. I collect action figures, too. I have eight 40 gallon totes in the basement full of action figures still on the cards (used to be mint but now they're getting a little bendy from sitting around). I really have to go through them and make a decision to keep only my favorites and sell the rest. There's a handful worth enough to basically let me break even on the whole lot even if I can only get $1 or $2 for the not so special ones. I take everything of the cards and out of the box now, though. I love lining them up and looking at them and/or photographing them.

I'm starting to think maybe this should've gone in the "Ashamed to admit" thread.
I love toys  I have plush toys of all the characters from Toy Story, Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. I also went nuts over those silly "Chevron cars" you buy at the gas station (I even have a garage, and a huge car-hauler). My other weakness in this area are MONSTERS  I love plush monster dolls, and have some really bizarre ones. The issue with them, is always keeping them out of sheepie reach! 8O Bert is totally obsessed with getting ahold of them!

Ha! You beat me to that comment. :rimshot:
I agree - they are in the ashamed category - very funny!

I have never heard of them. I looked at the pics, and I'm definitely in the group that thinks they are freaky. 8O But, I hate catoons and cartoon figures, and clowns just plain freak me out.....
Clowns? I thought I was the only person on earth who got freaked out by clowns! The only clown I ever liked was Emmit Kelley!
god those creep me out so much. almost as bad as the weird porcelain dolls my grandparents used to give me every hanukkah *shudder*

No, no. I'm not ashamed of the dolls at all. I'm happy to admit my obsession with all things Blythe. I'm barely even ashamed of how much they cost me either. I'm ashamed of my hundreds of action figures that haven't seen the light of day for years!

I didn't really expect that anyone on here collected them, too but I figured it was worth a stab to see. If anyone does happen to have a vintage one from their younger days that they want to part with, let me know, though. I want it!
If we're still talking obsession. Today Final Fantasy XIII comes out (well, to get technical, it came out at 12:00pm) and traditionally, I buy every new game on the day it comes out - complete with strategy guide. I have been doing this since Final Fantasy VII. Everyone thinks I'm really odd to be so obsessed with a video game, but I can't help it! It's beyond obsession!!
I'm not a doll collector per se, but I have several Madame Alexander dolls and there are more that I want. When I was 7, my friend had the Little Women dolls by M.A., and I've dreamed of owning those. I also have several stuffed animals that live on my bed. So I don't think collecting dolls is weird. It crosses the line if you mortgage the house to buy them though.
Weirdooooooo    lol Your not old enough to collect dolls don't you know. I thought you just collected shoes, purses, coats, and books. :) The only people that I knew who collected dolls were these very odd twins that lived by my house growing up. As a child I always remembered staring at the doll advertisements in the Parade paper that came out. But those were probably for the old people that read that paper. I don't have a collection of anything. Hmmmmm.........I take that back. I do have my collection of underpants.
Like them never heard of them before but they are way interesting. Better then those awfull "Bratz Dolls" they have now.

I actually collect teddy bears but I like those one jill, very different and more adult too. (pssst saying that as I think we are all kids all the time if we can be :P )
put me on the ''those are super creepy list''.....now if the bottoms of their feet were painted orange...maybeeeeee

I thought it was some vague Oompa Loompa reference!
Those are some of the scariest dolls I have ever seen

I used to have quite a few stuffies, but I wouldn't say I was a collector. I have just 2 now, one Nici Sheep and a Winnie The Pooh bear from 1978. I'm terrible with stuffies. The toy store is like a dog rescue centre to me. I want them ALL

Woah! 8O talk about creepy! I clicked on the link, and that shoe company site totally weirded me out!
I think they're a little creepy too.

Reminds me of a cross between chuckie and robot chicken. 8O

Nothing wrong with collecting stuff though.... I'm hugely against stuff in general so it's not my thing. I used to collect a few horse, cat and dog figurines but most have been broken over the years and I never replaced them.

The question about clowns is this...'is it a real clown or just somebody dressed up like one????
Whaddya mean you only liked Emmett Kelly!!!!!!!!Hmph and I thought we were friends! My previous girl Shaggy is in the photo too.

I collected costumes for years - thinking I'd need them for some theme shows and in the end I only performed in three costumes as they became my characters trademarks..so same "face" and costume for the characters . Happy the clown only changed her costume once in 16 years..went from polka dot to multi-colored dress. Miss Parfait never changed her nose or buck teeth but would sometimes change her apron and lace gloves. Miss Direction always wore the same purple dress and Tiara. 200 shows a year for 19 years and you'd think I change clothes more often! Nyuck Nycuk. I'd sometimes change the name to Miss Steak however...or Miss Fortune. Oh gawd stop me! Too bad you can't see the shoes.....oh they were to die for! Size 14 multi-colored with straps...dainty looking things! Gasp, I paid 500 for them in LA. Forget Gucci...get clown shoes for bragging rights!

I used to collect shoes and purses. I dunno what I collect now.....maybe bills?

Jil, I would have never pictured you as a doll girl either...surprised the heck outta me!!! Those are very cool by the way.

I'm actually mostly interested in dressing them up for photographic purposes. Dolls for only display would have no draw for me. Blythe are actually the only dolls I've ever liked and, odd as it sounds, I don't think of them as dolls as much as I think of them as models for photography. They're more cooperative than people and always look good.

You should see the clothes that people make for them (and sell on eBay, Etsy and tons of other websites). You can spend as much on a Blythe outfit as you would a human outfit. High fashion on a tiny scale is so cool-- Alexander McQueen did a whole tiny version of one his lines just for Blythe dolls! A lot of people do customizations, too, that are incredible. They completely redo the faces-- carve out the features, hand paint the tiniest details. It's really an art. I enjoy the creative side of it and seeing how other people work with a similar canvas to get such drastically different results.
My Chiropractor's name is Miss Alina Ment.

Or it should be.

Did you mean to post this here?
He did Jil. It was in reference to my magician/clown names - Miss Steak, Miss Fortune... Which I wrote regarding postings of scary clowns/dolls that were made on this thread  Sorry bout that..hijacked your post temporarily.

You know Ron and HIS jokes! Ha Ha

For some reason this reminds me of that game we played as kids where one person would whisper something in anothers ear and it would get passed around a circle. By the end ...the story had changed.

Back to dolls: My friend recently sent me a email of babies made out of marzipan that a photographer uses. The newborns were amazingly detailed and it was mind blowing. I can see why these Blythe dolls would be of interest to photographers and clothes designers. As long as one isn't named Chuckie. :D Do they come with names or do you name them yourself?
I too find them creepy.
My grand-daughter is into American Girl dolls and I help to support that interest. :D
My grandson now 13, has always hated clowns, at least since I took him to his 1st circus at age 3, and he hasn't been to one since. We had front row seats, but the clowns never had a chance to even think of approching us. He looked over as they were coming out and said I hate clowns! ( wish he would have told me before I went through the effort and expense of front row seats )
My grand-daughter who is 8 has never liked ( as in won't go ) fireworks. Their quirks take the fun out of a few holidays, but I love them despite their issues. :aww: :hearts:
