Can't think for myself Facebook Questions

I'm sure I'll have more but I'm going to open an account, I think, next week. Mr. J asked me to make one today for the both of us, but I haven't had time. Plus, I am never motivated to learn how to navigate through new places. Same with my driving.

Step one, they need an email address. Is this site a place I need to give my spam email address to or can I give a more legit one? I don't want to receive a single piece of spam to my "real" email address. Also when you add friends to your page or try to add yourself to someone elses page, do they see your email address or can you hide that?

I never thought I'd have to ask dumb questions b/c I used to be ahead of most folks when it came to internet stuff. Now I'm clueless! I realize this falls into the category of "should I open the attachment to this person who says I won the lottery in Africa?" ...but I also wanted to open a new thread since I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.

Facebook is addicting. You won't get spam. When you reply to someone's 'thread' you get email updates. You have the option of making your email viewable to your friends, but you don't have to. I have my account set to private so only my friends can view my info.
I avoided facebook for a long time too...

I use spam email addresses for almost everything except one that I give to people I specifically would like to get email from.

No one can see your email address on facebook if you don't want them to. I must say facebook is pretty good about privacy, lots of options to keep you as visible or invisible as you like.
I agree. I turned off all of the email notification messages because I am on it enough that I don't need the prompt. I use my real address, not my spam address, and have had zero problems.
It's easy enough to control who sees what, so you can use the email address you want your friends to see.

I use the email notifications. They're not spam, they let you know when you have messages, someone posts on your wall, etc.

Learn to love the "hide" feature.

Here's a great starter guide: http://mashable.com/2009/12/28/facebook-guide-book/
So when you send a request to be someone's friend... what do they see? That you as a "page/username" wants to be your friend? Not your email address right? I'm digging that there are so many privacy settings. I'll figure it out Monday. I've got 3 hungry babies and 2 dogs who know they don't eat until after we do.
No, they won't see your email address.

I use my real address and haven't had any spam from it and I'm on it a lot (not that amount of use makes a difference with that, but still)

When you request a friend, they'll just see it's from you, they can't see your profile or anything (if it's set as private) until they accept the friendship.
GRRR I had to join facebook too as my sister moved to Hawaii. The only way to find out what she is up to or see pictures of my nieces was to join that blasted thing. I pretend that I am not there. People still seem to find me even though I am practically invisible by my setting choices. Don't they know I don't want any friends ! :D I even put a picture of a chicken up as me. Somehow it doesn't work. On the other hand I have fun looking up people and spying on them. Or I play games if I am bored and don't feel like reading. Though I don't play farmville. No way, I have to march to a beat of my own drum even if I did have to join a mass media outlet.
I have a facebook membership...but mostly to play bejeweled...at which...I suck
Just be careful of the add-on applications, such as games, gifts, family, trees, and on and on. Some of them exist just to harvest your friends list, and you can safely ignore requests to use them. Also be wary of any friend requests from people you don't know, including people who say they are friends of friends. A little common sense goes a long way, and the positives of staying in touch and reconnecting with people far outweighs the potential pitfalls.

I haven't tried that yet....do I really need another addicition?
I have no idea what either of those are. So you guys play each other through facebook ...like you would on yahoo games? I HATE being the newbie or out of touch.
I have never done yahoo but, it sounds the same.
I have a hard time quitting until I am at the top of
my list!!!
I am really not competitive though!

But...you are adorable!
I used my real email address as well - not an issue.
I use the email updates - handy with an old thread to get caught up when a day or two has passed.
I don't do ANY of the games or other apps. I use the hide feature as well to hide other peoples apps being posted. You still get news and updates from them, just omit can farmville, fish tanks, mafia war, etc crap if it's not your interest.

I do love it for staying in contact with extended family and friends, seeing pictures and all that stuff.
I don't know how y'all keep up with friends and their posts. I can see how this can be addicting ...and take up all your time! ;) Signed up this morning and think my page will be as plain as can be for awhile. Now to find friends...
So anyone smart enough to tell me what privacy setting makes your friends list invisible to those not on your list? I noticed a few people didn't have their friends list accessible, but no matter how many times I go through the features... I can't figure out how they did it. Anyone know??

ETA: Nevermind. Got it.
I don't know of a way to do it, either. Maybe they didn't think it was necessary since you can't interact with someone without their permission. There are help forums there -- maybe the answer is there, if no one here comes up with it.
I figured it out! Thanks ;)

I don't want stalker people in my past stalking my friends, so I figured out how to make it disappear to non-friend of friends.
How did you do it? I've had the stalker issue, too.
I don't think I have any FB stalkers BUT, if I do
it just shows they care!
