You might be surprised how effective Time Outs are. When my dogs get too unruly, they are in Time Out in the backyard till we decide then can come back in. My dogs at first are pretty excited, but then as they wait for us to come to the door to let them in and we keep them out, they start to whine. For us, our dogs want to be with us ALL the time, so it works well that as punishment, they are kept away from us. I know all homes are different as are dogs, but give it a shot! If it doesn't work at least you are finding out what will work for you! |
I think time outs are a good idea as long as your pup doesn't see the crate as a punishment. If you do put him in there to chill, make sure he gets lots of praise and treats and make it a good time for him so he never makes an association that going into the crate is bad. I understand completely, you really need a break sometimes! |
We do time outs for my girls, but we use "Place" as a time out destination, and not their crate. You don't want them to view the caret as punishment. Tonks will get time outs at the dog park; she tends to play too rough with puppies. She knows the drill so well; I'll see a new puppy and tell Tonks "Gentle". 90% of the time she listens. 10% of the time, its too tempting so she runs after the puppy until it submits into a scared little ball, which Tonks thinks is pretty cool. THEN she comes back to me and puts herself in Time Out. Luna will see Tonks in Time Out, and come and join her. She thinks she must have been bad too. |
I have used time outs for unruly Boxer(my Chloe would never be)behavior. Instead of her crate, she is gated in the hallway where she can see us. I ignore her for about 10 minutes while playing and talking to Chloe, or just do routine things in the kitchen. The Hall of SHame works like a charm. She is 1.4 yrs. Good luck!! |

Tiggy does this sort of thing too. I'm sure she thinks "I'll do the bad thing that I really love then do the punishment 'cause I know I have to and its worth it." I havent found a punishment bad enough to stop Tiggy chasing other dogs as I'm not prepared to resort to violence. |

I'm with you; I don't EVER want to beat my dog, and I've not found anything that will deter her if she REALLY wants to jump on a smaller one. And Tonks doesn't actually hurt the dog, or I think I'd be more concerned. |
No Tiggy doesnt hurt them either. Just scares the willies out of them and then runs back to me looking really happy with herself. Lately I've been teaching her a technique that Patricia McConnell teaches fearful dogs. The command is lets go and you immediately do an about face and go in the opposite direction. She recommended running a bit if you can as dogs love to chase their humans. So I thought well I'll try substituting chasing and pouncing on dogs with chasing and pouncing on me. We've just started learning it but Tiggy caught on really fast, chasing is good. It worked today when the italian greyhounds were across the other side of the oval and I had Tiggy off leash but she realised that then she went on leash so I'm not sure Miss Smarty will do it again. Like I said gotta love a smart dog, I think!!! |
