Hugs to Maggie! Everything will be fine. Remember dogs live in the moment & she will try to be her usual self once she comes round, so keep her away from stairs and stuff she can jump on, in case she damages the stitches. |
I hear yah. She will do fine. |
Boy...do I know what you are going through...Your head says...everything will be fine!!! But your heart isn't sure. It will a hard day for you, not so much for Maggie. Just keep busy, go out a buy her a new toy and call in the afternoon as soon as they say you can. Good Luck, give Maggie a from Heart and let us know how she did!!! |
Take a deep breath, and think happy thoughts about your beautiful girl. Everything will be fine. I know how hard that wait is. Hugs from Lisa and Frankie |
Let us know how she does. She'll do a lot better than her Mom, I'm sure! |
Fingers crossed for a good surgery My senior basset Simon just had anesthesia yesterday (dental), and I made sure I stayed busy until I could go get him! |
I'm sure she'll do great. I remember when my dogs were altered. I called right when the vet reopened after lunch. I think the staff thought it was a bit strange that I called so soon after the procedure, but I just needed re-assurance. |
Thanks everyone. I just keeping telling myself that God couldn’t be so mean right after losing Lola. That Maggie HAS to be fine. I know that it is the best thing for her. I just love my baby so much. I know, I will imagine Lola is right there with her, protecting her. |
I thought she was only like 16 weeks old? Is she older than I thought? |
good luck maggie! She'll do fine. |
Yes, she is 16 weeks. Our vet believes in spaying at this age. Before the first heat. |
Well, Tim just took Maggie to the vet. That was one pissed off panda not getting her breakfast. I can relate. So should I just start mainling Xanax ?! |
Fingers crossed ! But i'm sure she will be ok . Julianne and marls |
sure Maggie will be fine, well apart from missing her brekkie! Didnt realise you could have bitches speyed so young! I bet she is home now anyway and being spoiled rotten! |
serenity now mom, she'll be home needing all your love and attention. |

Actually, some of the current thinking is that it is beneficial to do so before the first heat. I also noticed that the pups I have done earlier like this have a much faster recovery. All I know is that I HATE spay day. |
Poor Lily. She is just wandering around lost wondering what we did with her puppy. I didn’t really think of how this would effect her. Last time we took her friend away, she didn’t come back. Tim is taking her to the park to keep her busy. |

All I know is that I HATE spay day. Firstly best wishes with maggie and hope all goes well. Secondly I dont know if you have had a large breed before but spaying at 16 weeks is not recommended at such an early age. The current thinking is quite the opposite, later the better for a bit of maturity under them and to avoid other longer term problems that can or may happen down the track. With this breed 6 months onwards later the better when the growth plates have closed, usual recommendation is 7-9 months onwards preferably 12 months or older. Info for you on the current research of de-sexing dogs, the pros and cons of de-sexing and the current recommendations especially for larger breeds. Remembering also toy and small breeds can be done earlier as there maturity is quicker they can be fully mature by 8 - 12 months old. Large and larger breeds later maturity so interesting read for you if you have had not had a large breed before. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTerm ... InDogs.pdf |
i am sure she will be fine ! take a deep breath relax !! |
I just spoke to the vet, and Maggie did have a complication. Her ovary was connected to her kidney. We are going to talk to him more about it when we pick her up. All I have been told is that her incision is much larger than usual. As for the age of spaying, I feel like such an idiot. I had no idea. We did Lily at 4 months as well. Edit: I just found this as well that I now recall reading before we had Lily done. It espouses the benefits of early spay and neuter with several references to back it up. I just wish there would be a definitive consensus. http://www.danesonline.com/earlyspayneuter.htm |

Just think how happy she'll be once Lola gets home. |
LolasmMama, I had real trouble choosing when to spay Tonks and Luna. Some studies say after the first heat is advisable, some say to do it before those hormones can get going, and they link that to possible causes of mammary cancer in OES. I lost my very first sheepy when i was 6 to mammary cancer; so that was my decision maker. I had Tonks and Luna done between 5 and 6 months old. I was concerned I had stunted their growth, but they ended up being a bit slow to fill out. In fact, I think Luna may have surpassed her mother in size, topping out at a decent 75 pounds. Until there is more definitive information on the subject, I think we all have to try and do what we think is the right thing for our dogs. |
