MATTZILLA....

You really don't know how tempting it is to throw in the towel and shave Archie right now (he hasn't been cut or shaved), we were away for a month and Archie was in kennels, he really enjoyed himself with the other dogs and the running around in muddy field - we left the snow behind and the rain. Archie was no trouble, and when we came back he just settled right down as if we never left, the kennels groomer broke her leg on the ice, so his coat was managed by the other kennel staff, they really did their best even washing him (something I do only rarely!) etc but oh dear, he is possibly 40% Matts, it is a slow proccess but almost two weeks at home he is avoiding the sight of brushes like a master sneaky sheepie

Poor old pup, serves me right, he is currently hiding in his crate not convinced by the offer of biscuits in the lounge!

That is my nightmare!!
If I leave Tiggy more than 1 week she gets bad.
Wayne is suggesting 2 weeks away in July but I keep thinking about how bad her coat will be when we get back. 8O :(
No getting around it if you want to go away for a week or 2 or more without them. If someone brushes them that doesn't know how, you lose undercoat. :( If no one brushes them at all you have mats. :( My suggestion is to brush them out really good right before the kenneling time. I usually bathe them also as that helps to keep the amount of matting down. When you get them back, be prepared to have to do some dematting. Just take it nice & slow & do some each day, working in a pattern so each day you also go over the parts you already dematted the days before. :phew:
Haha poor Archie- he's had too much fun!! :yay:

I guess a little every day is the answer. Or just bite the bullet and get him shaved. Then you can start over, with no damaged/ broken/ straggly puppy coat left he will be easy to groom as his coat will be all adult. I know Ru still has some puppy fur growing out and it's straggly and dry looking.

Whatever you decide- GOOD LUCK 8-O
He is coming along a lot better, his top and sides are more or less okay, but his neck (they left his collar on the whole time) chest, legs and bum are the challenge ahead I had bite the bullet and trim the area in front of his privates, as the matts were to difficult to work with against his soft tummy, he fell for my trap yesterday, we had a great walk on the chilly downs in the morning/afternoon, the afternoon I ignored him, he was keeping a warey eye on me for brushes  then when we had had our dinner in the evening he fell for me leaving the gate open, he thought he'd have a sniff off the plates on our dining table, and CLICK trhe gate went behind him :clappurple: 4 hours on his table last night, still loads to do as pointed out abouve, but hey ho you can't traumatise him, I am not sure he'll come into the lounge if I am there to night
Poor Archie.
My Mum's poodle sympathises with him. I just went home and brushed, clipped and bathed her. Every time I walked into the room she looked to see what I had in my hands before deciding whether to bolt or not.
It's still on going, argh why do I like long coats so much 8O

Two hours on one matt last night on his cheek/neck. It was a biggy.

I reckon the cats are pawing his coat while he sleeps

It's like painting the Forth Bridge, you get one part sorted carry on working along him to find the area that was clear down to the skin has matted up again!

Grrrrrr.

Poor old hound ain't half making some odd noises! :cow:
Awww poor Archie.

Tiggy says to tell him she knows exactly how he feels.

It took me 2 hours just to do her front legs today. And she hates having her front legs groomed.

It was me making the odd noises, mostly bad words, Tiggy was just sighing a lot. But she kept popping her head up and wiggling around and doing the turtle so I couldnt get to her legs.

Hiya,
Invest in a Les Pooches brush this will get the matts out really easily and will not hurt the dog, the shampoo and detangler I suggested before would be so much quicker than what your doing believe me I now have 9 oes on my books and this method really works. The stomach and private area I would just clip off if your not showing him it makes life so much better for the dogs.
My two the same age are Matzillas too, I always say going from puppy fluff to junior coat is not great but when they transition again to the adult coat blooming through THE MATT FAIRIES BREED BIG TIME.

You seem to get them done and 24 hours later those buggars have been breeding again !! :x Cant wait till all the mature coat is all through, especially with two the same age and everything is settled down again with those darn matt fairies. 8)

I have two les pooches, as it is, these Matts the brushes just ride over, Yes including the matt zapper, they are the sort a none OES groomer would shave him down for :(

Shampooing at the kennels is what started this off in the first place I think, he went there with a totally free down to the skin coat.

As ususal it's just the softer whites that are the issue, his grey barbed wire coat is fine

It's a Work in Progress

I am quite a big softy when it comes to causing him pain/discomfort with the brushing, he gave up on me Sunday evening, almost like "oh just get on with it" until I pulled a little hard trying to tease one matt apart :cow:

NO doubt I'll get there, maybe I shouldn't let him have so much fun bouncing around muddy fields?
Nope I'm all for the oes to behaving fun my oes is in the woods all the time and I just hate all this mud but I cope with it.

If your not going to show him make the coat softer as it will be much easier to look after. One of my clients dog is just 2 years and he comes in monthly and since changing the shampoo the coat is relativly easy to manage.

I'm really surprised with the Les Pooches, I use the purple one and it takes to matts straight out. The matt zapper isn't that good on this kind of coat or thats what I have found.

Its a shame your not closer as I would have helped you, I;m not your normal groomer I will dematt dogs they have to be really, really bad for me to clip them off.
i say soak archie in some conditioner :) ...
then get a really comfy stool and let him sleep on the table for a few hours while you watch a movie and demat !

and temp him with something better than cookies ! ... try ... a peice or cheese ... or a walk :P ... i have yet to meet a sheepdog that would turn down a carrot :P sadie's stuborn but not even she will resist the temptation of a trail of bits of carrots. :)
How are you doing Mark?
Still a work in progress

Archie is plain refusing to let me touch his legs at the moment, major kicking and weird talking and trying to bite me, I have had some success with his chest, whilst not loosing to much coat.

Hi lower legs are clumped but he is suffering no irritation so while that continues I am just trying sneak small sections in, without it turning into a battle and stressing him out (nevermind me!)

I let him have a day off inbetween sessions (although I do sneak in an additional general pin brush calm brushing in the evenings when he is snoozing on the floor in the lounge.

His main body is more or less okay, although I am getting matts appear hours later, poor hound I really should just let him play and stop checking his coat every time I touch him!

oh gosh you have my heartfelt sympathy...you and the pup...Summers coat just gets cut when I see a matt i just snip it off....hubby loves her long but doesnt brush her. When she sees me take the lid off her brush box she scarpers..x
