Cool Mat

Since the sun has been out the last few days (I think they forecast it to get cold again!) my mind has turned to cool mats. I wanted to get Ru one last year but couldn't find any. I've seen a few online and the prices vary considerably. Does anyone use them? Do you have to soak it in water & does it stay damp? I'm not too happy at the thought of leaving Ru damp :?

Here are some I have found (I need a UK supplier)

I have one that I like and Chewie likes. It is dry on the outside.

It has a waterproof fabric outer - feels like a synthetic - maybe nylon? It has a layer of spongy stuff inside. You fill it with water - it has a hole and a plug. If it lays on a normal cool surface, it stays really cool. I did find that it got very warm on the floor of my friend's RV driving to shows in the summer heat. But in his crate at a show it always was much cooler than the actual floor.
It does get SUPER heavy w/ the water weight, so I recommend not needing to move it around for long distances a lot. I added it to my rolly cart with my crate and tack box, etc for shows - then it was just fine. :D

I'm not sure if you can get this exact one, but the link provides all the info - sizes, specs., etc.
I have the medium size. I have had it at least 2 years now. Sunny (lucali) has the same one for Luca, and she got hers a year or 2 before me.

PS - I have had the same water in mine the whole time  ....as long as it gets to cool off (not being in the sun, etc) it really stays cool. Mine actually is wintered in my garage, so it freezes for half the year...probably not the best for it...
Thanks :D I looked at that one earlier and forgot about it. It's much cheaper than the others as far as I can tell. Is the medium size big enough for Chewie? Ru is only 24" to his shoulder. Would you recommend a larger size? I'm not too worried about weight, if I'm going to start doing shows, I will need to get a trolley anyway.
With the medium he hangs a bit off the edge with his legs. But his body fits on it just fine. If I was getting another one, I would still get the medium. The one in the picture with the Golden Retriever looks like it's a large.
I have a canine cooler and a koala cooler. Both have washable fabric covers and hard storage cases. I've never used them
Cassie, Vicki (Georges mum) got one last year, it had ridges on it and George hated it - might be working PM'ing her about it ?
they are very very easy to make.
Go to your local gardening center and buy the carton of crystals to mix with plant dirt to retain water.

Go to your fabric store... buy a thicker cotton material and then another outer thicker material.

you sew 3 sides. Pour in some crystals and then sew a line across that, work up crystals, sew a line, pour in crystals and sew a line. All the way to the top. Remember you don't want to pour too many crystals as they need to expand when they get wet.

You can soak it in water and it will expand.. slip into the thicker material slip and dogs can lay on it all day and stay cool. I used to even put them in the freezer after they were wet if it was a REALLY hot day....

Oh is that what they are? Hmm I might consider this option, I'll work out the cost. Very helpful, thank you!
Wow! Thanks Ali, Ive always planned on getting them for my dogs for the summer, but making them myself would be great. :D I had no idea that the stuff to go in them was readily available. I have a neck wrap for me with the same stuff in it that works great, made with rip-stop nylon, so i may get that for the fabric for the dogs too, since it's water resistant and nails wouldn't be able to pierce it.
