Someone who:: ~~loves clowns ~~loves to watch a stragglie, messy dog, turn into a beautiful work of art after a good groom ~~ is friendly, and happy, since these dogs draw strangers like a magnate ~~ loves to repeat themselves....""It's an Old English Sheepdog...no, not TOO rare,,,,,NO, it doesn't shed as much as a lab or a beagle...... Yes!! She needs to be groomed a couple time as week...etc...etc.. ~~~especially someone who has a GREAT sense of humor, cuz without one, these sheepies can test the patience of JOBE....... |
I would say from the OES I've met, they'd want someone who is relaxed, easy-going, outdoorsy, and isn't so OCD about things. Seems like it fits the description of many of the owners I know too. None of the qualities I carry but thankfully mine still choose to love me. If we're looking for qualities that are LIKE an OES that humans should have to understand an OES, clumsy and silly would definitely be in there too. I'm 100% clumsy. |
I can tell you what my OES look for: Someone who has tasty morsels in the garbage can Both hands to constantly pet and scratch behind the ears or by the rear A big enough car to go bye-bye in Good set of legs to keep up with in a walk/jog A supply of doggy cookies A bed that is large enough to push their human off |
A sense of humor. Everything else follows from that and no humorless people should be permitted to own this breed, though oddly enough some do. By rights they should be stripped of their OES owning privileges immediately. Kristine |

My girls needed people with determination, and commitment to them. Not every OES is an easy dog to train, and my two wanted to set the standard of "look what we can get away with". OES need owners who are smart, but also savvy; that way we can keep them from getting themselves in over their heads when they are SURE there's some fun/trouble to be gotten into. And I agree whole-heartedly on the sense of humor. An OES needs a person who will laugh at them when they come to the door covered in mud, and not yell at them. They need a person that will share in their jokes and appreciate their clownish behavior. And I think lastly, they need someone prepared to receive limitless love. |
It will be said again and again so I may as well- A person with a sense of humour. Rufus is at his happiest when he's making me laugh. Someone who can still breathe with a huge hairy dog sitting on their lap. |
ah , all of the above and loyalty to the bone, just like a great dog. |
gee good question ...Sense of humor is good someone with patience (to train and groom) someone financially stable (to pay someone to groom if they want) Someone who likes crowds because everytime I take my sheep dogs out I get mobbed someone who dosen't mind mud and grass and leaves and anything else a sheepdogs big feet pick up and drag in the house and someone who loves them for what they are..... big 'ol fuzzy butts of love |
Judging both by what I think Sheepies would want, and also the typical person here on the forum: Yup...definitely a sense of humor Warm, loving and demonstrative Active and willing to involve their dog in much of what they do Laid back and easygoing...able to take whatever happens in stride |
patience, patience, patience! also someone who doesn't mind having company in the bathroom when one is busy, also one must love giving hugs & kisses and talked to in dog talk when your attention is wanted! |
A pushover! |
Great answers above. I can add: "a good cook!" I call Willoughby my "sous chef" because he's always under the Chef! |
Someone who wants to be just as close to their dog as the dog wants to be to them! Definitely not a dog for people who "need their space" or have a large bubble. |
well other than a sense of humor and an ability to think of dog hair as a condiment, I think it really depends on the dog. I am actually two different people with my two. One wants to just please me, so I can be relaxed and laid back. The other one needs structure and parameters. So I guess if you have two Sheepdogs, you need to be schizophrenic? |

All of the above trait's are required as well as: Able to remove dingleberries without gagging. Accept and love a sloppy wet kiss. ( even at 4am ) Appreciate a big hairy enema everytime you stop too quick. Must be able to contort yourself around a sleeping sheepie at night. Watch from around the corner as they get into something and giggle....but yet know you have to be a party poop and correct them. |
A person who loves them & thinks about them as constantly as they love & think about their humans. |
To give him lots and lots of cuddles, love him, walk him, play with him and supply food/water - simple - infact don't most dogs just want that |

All of the above AND and person who desires a SHADOW 24/7! |
This is such a great topic. I agree w/all of the comments especially the sense of humor. You have to be devoted to them like they are to you. You have to not mind when they paw you and you can't get out of the way in time. They have to never be left out of anything and most of all just be LOVED! |
