We had a short haired low dander rescued hound dog and after a few years my 14 y/o sons Asthma went bezerk keeping him in random spontaneous attacks for most of an entire year. Most of that last year was spent on the nebulizer with inhalents and steroids. We found the dog a new home and my son improved greatly with only 2-3 seasonal airborn allergy attacks. I am hoping to no end that everything I have read is correct and he should not have a reaction ot an OES. The boys took great care of our last dog & played with her non-stop and were heartbroken when I chose my sons health over the dog. (btw- she went to friends of ours and we still do see her.) Does anyone have any additonal info or related experience to allergies/Asthma and OES's? Thanks much Laurie -- newbie here -- |

Wow,
I sold an OES puppy to a wonderful family. The wife ended up in emergency 3 times because of Asthma and allergenic reactions. She had her puppy shaved down and it didn't change anything. I offered to take the puppy back but she wouldn't give it up until she almost died from these problems when this puppy was 9 months old. We worked together and found this pup another wonderful home. My brother-in-law came to visit and he went to emergency twice in the firast two days from Asthma and we had our home professional cleaned to try and help him with this visit. I guess you just can't kill some people. I'd do more research! Zach |
This is how we got our rescue dog. The previous owner was allergic to dogs and couldn't keep her. No problems here! |
Hi Sandy,
Are you allergic to dogs and are not having any problems with OES? Zach |
I live in Florida where EVERYTHING is in bloom. Yes, allergies to that stuff. Dogs? No. Cats? Yes. |
Thanks Zach and Sandy. I've already paid for the pup so we're taking him. The breeder I chose has a live webcam so we watch Sam online 24/7 pretty much and now it is becoming some "fun torture" in the home stretch..lol. (about 23 days still to go)
I'm gonna hope for the best. Also, my neighbor is a Veterinarian and she gave me a thumbs up on OES's. Laurie |
OES are not hypo allergenic in the least. They do lose hair, and they have dander (which is essentially the animals saliva, skin oils, and skin that flake off and float in the air)
They do not shed like a lab, or husky type dog, but it is the dander not the hair that humans have reactions to. If you already re homed a dog due to asthma and allergies, I would not get another dog, just my opinion. Unless you are prepared to keep your sons allergies under control with antihistamines, and keep the asthma under control with a preventative medication such as advair, singulair, steroid inhalers which lower the immune system etc.... I have severe allergies and asthma, as does my husband, but we have decided our furkids are worth the extra care needed to keep ourselves healthy. Luckily only one out of four kids has inherited the allergies, but not asthma, and his allergies are mild. |
There is a pervasive myth, propagated by many including me I'm afraid, that OES are "hypo-allergenic because they have hair, not fur."
A friend of mine can't visit our house because of her allergies to dogs, nor can her husband touch her after being in contact with our dog. Just for what it's worth. |
I gotta chime in here. My sister, who was not allergic to our shelties, labs,
retreivers, or Samoyed. Now, with our OESs she cannot be in my house for more than 5 minutes without getting tight in the chest. I do not have a dirty dog, I promise. I really hope it works out for your new puppy and family! There are dogs that are better for allergy sufferers. Shellie (in PA) |
My kids both have allergies and while I haven't gotten them tested for what allergies they have, I am sure that our dogs and or cats could have something to do with it. My son also has asthma as well. We put in a new heating and air system almost a year ago and got a whole house filtration system that works with the heating and air. It uses a UV light to kill the bacteria and trap the dust and dander. I have seen a drop in the colds and sinus problems in my kids, but they do still get them from time to time. We have them both on allergy meds also that seem to keep it under control. They were never sick until they turned school age and started school, luckily summer is coming and we will get a break from it.
I would start looking into allergy testing and shots, if you are going forth with getting the puppy. It would break my kids heart if I had to find our fur babies a new home. Mine as well....LOL Good luck to you. Stormi and co. |
Oh boy - Oh boy - Oh boy. I guess we'll just have to do the wait and see now. We do have Singulair, Advair, Claritin and Zyrtec for preventatives.
I'll report back I suppose in 20+ days. Thanks for all your feedback. |
It's funny, my friend with miserable allergies nearly had an asthma attack after only about 10 minutes when he visited my house with just the cat here but with the puppy he was rubbing and cuddling him all over his face and had no problem whatsoever. I think it really is an individual thing as to what you personally react to. I wouldn't take a risk without first meeting the dogs and seeing how you do with them in person. |
Hi Lauri,
Believe it or not we all very much hope we are all wrong! We wish you and your family the best with your new puppy! Zach |
I know everyone is touching on the allergy issue but I am also concerned about your comment "we didn't want a little high-strung dog".
I wouldn't say an OES is not high strung. Especially with bountiful puppy energy. Depending on your activity level with your dog (which sounds very active with 4 boys!!) they may stay somewhat puppy-like their whole life but as a whole your pup will be pretty rambunctious until at least the age of 3+. Food for thought... I would hate seeing you have to rehome this pup too if you don't know what you're in for. Certainly they are very cute but they grow up very fast. And they will be in the middle of the action, all the time with your kids. You're going to really need to stay on top of training which mostly includes training your kids how to behave around the pup. If you're having any doubts, I'm sure if you share them with the breeder they will give you your deposit back if they are reputable. |
You didn't mention it in your post, but did you and your famiy go and spend any time with the puppy at the breeder or with the breeder's dogs? It seems that that could tell you a lot about how allergies will react. I know when I'm allergic to something, I normally have a reaction within the first 5 minutes or so, whether it be breathing or an outbreak of hives. |
Also, allergies can be cummulative. If you visit the pup and start itching and getting tight, when you are around it all the time the reactions will keep getting progressively worse. |
I know that is supposed to be the case, but in my experience a new animal will set my alleriges off, and in time, after about 3 weeks usually, I begin to have less and less problems. I'm not sure if I just get used to it or what... |
Hi all, we did not spend time with the pup because I am on Long Island and the dog is with a Florida breeder. I am taking a super chance here. Also, I agree with some others, my son needs to be better about taking his Singulair.
I wanted to address my term of a "litttle high strung" dog. When I say high strung I don't mean playful or happy. I mean yappy, licky, barky, bouncing off your walls just to get a across the room dog. (like a Jack Russell) We watched a Toy Terrier for my GF for a few months when she needed the help. Not one person in the family had a reaction to her. And she is hair as well. However, she was little and completely under our feet. The kids spent more time accidentally finding her poop with their shoes. And I spent alot of time washing shoes with the hose. We decided then that a larger breed with larger poop was best for us. And with our last dog that worked perfect for us. The yard was always clean. This is why I outruled the smaller dogs. One of my landlords years ago when I was a kid had a sheepie so I am familiar with the nature of this breed. I would love to go visit the breeder to see if any reactions, but unfortunatley I am not made of cash to just hop a plane to FLorida for the weekend. lol. I am actually quite optomistic. And, I've drilled it into my kids head that he WILL be better about taking his singulair every morning. I really appreciate all the feedback. 3 weeks and counting. Laurie |
I have allergies to anything green, floral or with fur. I went for years without pets and found living with the allergies better then life with no critters. So now we have 2 birds, 1 bunny, 1 cat & 2 OES. I Vacumn daily and the only pets allowed in the bedroom are the 2 Sheepies. I also have a good air purifier in our bedroom.
A friend suggested acupuncture to help with my allergies so I figured that I would try it. I've been going since the beginning of January. I'm down to 1 benadryl at bedtime and for the first time in nearly 5 years my right sinus is not plugged. I never would have thought it would work but so far it has. |

Wow, that's awesome! I wish my mom would go to an acupuncturist, her allergies are horrendous around cats and most dogs. |
I can be around dogs, but not cats. The whites of my eyes swell and itch, my whole eye looks like there's a clear gel over it, and my throat gets itchy and swells shut. Not a pretty sight. Allergy eye drops and Benadryl are the only things that get my eyes back down to size and my throat opened. Because of this, I have never grown to know cats and could never live with a one in my house. Pity, too, because there are some beautiful cats out there, but I get paranoid whenever I'm within 5 feet of one for those reasons.

Have any of you watched "Hitch" with Will Smith...now that's an allergy reaction...it was to fish. Anyways, hysterical...I sure hope none of you get that bad.
We don't have allergies in this house (not that we know), and as far as I know the Poodle (with the really tight coats) are the only ones reccommended for allergy sufferers...less dander than any other dog. I know all the other Bichon/Shitzus/etc are also okay but more for the milder cases of allergies. |

My mom has lhasa apsos, apparently they are also one of the few breeds where the dander doesn't bother allergy sufferers. I think there's probably about 5-10 breeds (most of them small) that don't cause allergic reactions. |
My ex-boyfriend had a severely asthmatic sister who couldn't tolerate animals at all. They searched and searched and found that Shi-tzus didn't cause her any problems at all. |
