Prednisone

Ok I am so glad to have all of you to help answer my questions. Frankie is on Prednisone for his ear infection, I know it makes them urinate alot, drink alot and eat alot. Do they eventually get used to it?

He has to go outside and pee so much I feel bad for him. Should I limit his water a little bit? He can hold it all night, but during the day when I'm home he can go outside and pee every half an hour. This last time he had just been out and peed and made it as far as the deck and went on the deck.

Thanks
Lisa and Frankie

Ellie has been on Prednisone several times and each time that she was on it, she had to go all of the time and even had accidents a few times. She never got use to it but once she was off of it, within a few days, she was back to her normal routine.

I took up all of my area rugs and throw rugs, accidents were much easier to clean up.

I also have a diabetic dog that was given Predisone prior to his eyer surgery and it had the same effects on him.
I'm confused...Frankie is on the predisone, the ketco whatever its called and the ear drops???? Is there a resn they put him on all three? I was understanding it was a yeast infection in the ears? Why the predisone?

Not critisizing. Just wondering since we often ahve the same type problems...

Oh, I would never think you were critisizing. He is on so much stuff right now. Here's the story. My dog walker who is a vet tech came over to walk him on Wednesday and called and told me she thought he had an ear infection. So I made an appt for him. They looked into his ears and said the were inflamed and he had a large ball of wax lodged half way down his ear canal. So they took a tiny little forcep like thing put it down his ear and tried to pull it out after 2 trys he got very upset. So they did a ear wash 2x and that was all he would tolerate. I was told give him ear wash and ear drops for 10 days come back and if it was still there they would sedate him and remove the wax. He got very nasty with me that night and the next morning. I called the vet and said hey I don't want to turn him into a cranky dog do you have any suggestions. So they put him on the pills to try and get the inflamation down and kill the infection and the yeast, and said to try the drops again in 2-3 days maybe his ears wouldn't be that sore. He actually let me put them in today I tricked him while he was napping.
So thats Frankies ear story for now. lol

I'm with ashley on this one, why prednisone a pretty powerfull drug to be giving for inflammation of the ear.

Anyhow not unusual for excessive water consumption and also eating.

One bitch I had on it pee flowed, had to restrict the water, so while he is on it, dont have a bowl down permantley, offer water on and off through the day.

Each time with my bitch she would happily guzzle a whole bowl full of water so we in the end had to restrict it to avoid her peeing everywhere, this way you can after a large drink later on take him out for a giant pee. Night time last drink around 7-8 oclock then huge pee time before he retires to sleep.

Unfortunately that can be one of the side affects of the drug. Also if on it for awhile, you have to reduce the dose overtime not just Ooooh I have finished and they come off it cold turkey. Usually they are weaned off it gradually.
shouldn't be on it very long, but agree with whats been stated. i'd ask the vet his reasoning if it's prescribed for very long.
Make sure you wean his off of it. Follow directions on the bottle of pills. Usually they start put with a bigger dose for a couple of days & then start to decrease it to get them off as soon as possible. It's a good drug when used for the correct reasons & used properly. But not a drug to be used "just because".
Barney's been on prednisone several times and he pees a lot then too. We make sure he gets enough water, but also restrict it a little, and then just take him out more than usual and it's typically fine. He does seem to get a little used to it, or maybe we get used to it and are more proactive with the removing of water. But once he's off it he goes back to normal really fast.
