Mitch used to bark alot and i got told to teach him to "speak" (bark)on command and then when he spoke(barked) when you didn't want him to then you could tell him no and he would understand better. Anyway it worked great with Mitch .Plus it was one of his party tricks when it was treat time. |
dreamer was the worse puppy at barking constent then all of a sudden after about he was 5 months old it stopped hang in there they do grow out of it.. well some do |
The only reason I really care is because of when she has to be at Doggie Day Care when we vacation. She can’t be barking all day or she will end up in the 'collar of shame' (what I call it). It is a cintronella one. Lola ended up wearing it about half the time. It didn’t seem to faze her, but I was just curious if there was a way to mitigate it now. |
Asterisk does that. Usually when she gets super excited when other dogs are around. No real advise as she still does it. Wendel has what we call a howl-ly bark when he's over excited. |

No. It was discussed before we left. They have a policy that dogs must be evaluated before you can book a stay for them. They almost wouldn’t take her because of the barking. She is in a residential area, and has to be concerned about too much noise. Lola didn’t just bark, she BARKED. It is a wonderful facility that the dogs LOVE. They go nuts trying to get inside when we get there. They also have a camera, so I always knew when she had it on. There are no kennels, just play areas. It is the only facility of its kind around here and being that we were going to be gone for two weeks, I wanted my dogs to be as happy as we were. Here is their web page. They put up a lovely memorial of Lola on their page. She is also in a lot of their pics form this summer with Lily. http://www.campilene.com/ |
Tonks and Luna aren't barkers, so I don't think its a breed thing. Sure, they let you know if the mail man is here, or a jogger is going by, but that's it. Sometimes Tonks will bark while playing, but its not constant. In those times, I often need them to stop barking, like if I have to sign for a delivery. I am still working on the "quiet" command. When they bark, you gently hold your hand around the muzzle, give a little squeeze and say "Quiet". Then let go. If they start to bark, you do it again. After a few times, try to say "quiet" first; if they stop barking, rave like CRAZY: "GOOD quiet! Very Good girl!!!" And that's it; repeat until successful. "Quiet" command with the hand around the muzzle, showing them what you want, and lots of praise when they get it right. |
Sounds great! I will try it. Thanks! |
I'd say OES are practically mutes when compared to bassets or coonhounds...... |
I can’t really complain. The only time she barks is when she is playing. Now my yorkie... He has never been at camp though. |
there just was a segment this weekend by Victoria Stillwell on the subject of barking. She would let the dog bark and when he stopped said "quiet" and used a hand signal and treat. It took her about 15 minutes before the dog got it but by the end the dog would stop barking with just the hand signal. Seemed to work well and a lot of positive re-enforcement. |
Oooooohhhh.....I am going to try this on my Yorkie. He is practicing for the Olympic Barking Team. We're pretty sure he'll medal... |
