Poor Max has an infection--- advice please until Monday!

As you know, when Max is in the house he wears a diaper wrap. Just a little bit ago when I let him out, there was really nasty pus and thick yellow "stuff" in the diaper. He seems to be peeing normally, and doesn't seem to feel bad. I am assuming bladder or kidney, and will call the Vet first thing Monday morning. Or-- do you think it is serious enough to take him to Urgent Care??? He is drinking and eating normally as well.

I am unaware...why does he wear a diaper in the house? Is he older? Does he have a kidney problem already?

The smelly yellow pussy stuff does usually indicate an infection. But where is it coming from? Are you saying its the urine??? Is there a spot or hot spot that might be causing the odor? Its hard to say wheterh or not its an emergency without knowing the other details...

Sorry Ashley-- I just assume everyone on the forum knows Max's issue... I forget it has been three years ago, and not everyone was here then. My apologies. He had spinal surgery three years ago--- ruptured discs while playing in the snow.
He "dribbles" and wears a wrap. Yes-- the gross stuff in the diaper was in his urine. No kidney problems per say--just incontinent as times.
If it's not bothering him, and he seems asymptomatic, I would just observe for the weekend.

I would clean it with warm water to get rid of the gunky stuff. If you can, can you get some air in there? Band off for awhile, or wrap with some cottony stuff that breathes instead of his usual band?

Thanks Dawn. Actually you and John had the same idea! We took his band off, and put him on a nice warm blankie-- with plastic underneath-- just in case! We used warm water, and cleaned his "area" really well, and dried him good. Would you say bladder or kidney? I was worried about this, because of the time he now spends in the diaper. Snow and more snow keeps him in more, and, thus, keeps him wrapped more!

Based on Max's medical situation w/ chronic incontinenece, my feeling is it would be coming from external, and trying to work it's way internally. The warm, moist environment of the pee band being a breeding ground for bacteria or yeast. With any luck, you may keep it from becoming a true UTI. :crossed: :crossed:

Gunky stuff like that is not that uncommon in the male species, so it may not be all bad.
Of course, still keep watching, but good hygeine can stop a lot of infections in their tracks if you catch it early.
Poor Maxieboy! I don't have any knowledge or advice to offer but I wanted you to know that I am hoping it clears up and he keeps feeling fine. Sounds like you've improved the situation for him a bit. I hope it does the trick. Max is one of my hero dogs so I will be relieved when you report that all is well again.
One more thing that will help.....keep his penis shaved. Hair is a breeding ground for bacteria too.
please be careful!!!! :cow:
I have had a few male Pyrs that have had gunky thick yellow stuff coming out of there private area.
I think it's somewhat normal.
But I would still get it checked out.

Yep, clean, clipped and dry. Do you have any topical antibiotic cream on hand? Should be a part of every doggie kit.
