No, they don't turn them mean. They just put them in their place for the short time you need to use them. |
In the Canine First Aid class you are taught to muzzle all hurt dogs - even your own - before treating them. Its the same thing when you think about it - he is in pain and needs help. My sister has to muzzle her CKCS at certain times of the year when she takes he rout for walks so she won't scarf down date nuts and need a third surgery for a blockage - Annie never seems to care. |
True. Thanks Lisa |
The best non-kill shelter in MN (our basset rescue works w/ them often) totally recommends a soft muzzle. It acts similar to a wrap (antianxiety wrap, TTouch wraps) in that it calms them. I use a soft muzzle with Maggie our coonhound when I trim her nails - she absolutley is terrified and self expresses her anal glands, she is so upset. She's a rescue from inhumane living conditions, so I only can guess at her roots for that one. It just works. Also, WE (the humans) are less fearful and stressed knowing we aren't going to get bit, so that also helps the dogs. If we are all stressed with a task, there is no way the dog is going to feel good about it! |
I posted under I think the medical category about muzzeling my own dog for ear drops. I use a soft nylon muzzle...the first few times he just let me put it on but then he realized what it was and would run away. Be careful when putting on and taking off...just don't put your face close to their face in case they are upset with the muzzle... Also, they can still bite with a soft nylon muzzle. I put it on and held the clasp part while administering the drops, then cookies and I would massage the ear drops in gently and then release the muzzle and another cookie... The nylon soft muzzles are meant to only be worn for up to about 15 minutes..Just so you know not to leave it on too long... |
When I had to clean out Winston's ears, I used a soft muzzle on him. It was AMAZING how he'd go from growling and snapping if you touched his ears to completely compliant and even relaxed. He was the most gentle giant (other than when you messed with his ears) before and after the muzzle. |
