This really took me off guard. I think what you're talking about is having the dewclaws removed. You would not declaw a dog, but you could have the dewclaws removed. The dewclaw is the claw that is up on the lower leg where the "thumb" is. |

The dew claws are supposed to be removed in this breed. It's easier and much less painful with much less collateral tissue damage to remove them on newborns as opposed to removing a ripped one on an adult dog. Kristine |
HI! when I was a child, our adult Sheepdog accidentally ripped out one of her dew claws. It was VERY painful to her, she bled EVERYWHERE, and she couldn't walk. My father had to carry our 100 pound dog down 6 flights of stairs to the street below and then drive her to an emergency late night vet. Dew claws serve no purpose in this breed, other than to get in the way and be problematic. One of my two girls didn't have hers removed (an oversight; all her litter mates' dew claws were done) and I cannot trim them. I have to ask my vet to do it. And because its up high and makes no contact with the ground, it doesn't wear down naturally like her other claws when I walk the dogs. |
