SheepieFest! Should we continue?

auntie Paula and the gorgeous twins and I had lunch at Hackneys on Saturday...and had a prilimary chat about the upcoming SheepieFest. Last year the weather sucked and we didn't have a great turnout.

Can you give me an idea if y'all are still interested in carrying on the tradition? Suggestions to make it more successful? Ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Deb - just a heads up that many of us will be gone Sept 18/19 and wiped out or on our way home the following weekend due to the National.

I think you had a better turn-out - well, the weather was a factor, of course - when you scheduled it the same weekend as Chicagoland's Dog Days or the WI club's herding clinic. That's probably because there was more incentive (more things to do) for people coming in from further away. I'm not sure when/if things are scheduled this fall. Can't think that far ahead!

That said, it's always a nice opportunity for us locals to get together. How do you guys feel about it? You're the ones who do all the work.

Kristine
I really enjoyed attending last year. Asterisk had a ball running with the other dogs. Wendel enjoyed meeting all the people who could pet him. The rain last year was a bummer, but it was really fun to put faces to the screen names!
OMG! I can't believe this is even a question. Of course SheepieFest should continue. It's so much fun! We still had fun last year and Fozzie had a chance to run with everyone despite his protectiveness of Evan and me. I do think we had a better turn out the year prior when we did it the same weekend as Chicago club gathering, however, the weekend was also beautiful if I recall correctly. There's always a chance of icky weather that time of year. We'll be there rain or shine!
I always LOVE the thought of coming!
Of course I have yet to make it sooooo....
I won't even go there!

Maybe it would be easier on you guys if
you just had a big Play Date!!
Not worry about food and entertainment.
(of course coolers should be welcomed 8) )

Then after the PD whoever is hungry you
can all go eat!
Do you have any dog friendly restaraunts??

Stacy... :hearts:

The chicago club changed their weekend last year and threw us off. Do you have any idea when they are planning this year? I really enjoyed myself there last year.

You are a doll...thank you Sister in Paw!
What is this SheepieFest? We just moved to the Chicago area and would love to let Humphrey meet some fellow sheepies.
SheepieFest! is a sheepdog party we hold each October in a forest preserve. We usually have a silent auction to raise a little money for rescue, but mostly, we all bring a dish to share, and have a ball! The last few years we've had wonderful people let up agility runs, and obedience tracks for the dogs to try. It has been wonderful...and as I said, we tend to raise a few hundred dollars for rescue.

Last year, we had a miserable cold rainy day, and attendance was low.

Paula and I organize it with lots of help from others. I'd like to continue it, but need to find a way to renew it's spirit.

Ideas?
Seeing how much Evan has grown should renew the attendance :D :D :D
SPIRIT RENEWED! Just the mention of SheepieFest gets me all giddy with excitement :D

Humphrey, where do you live in the Chicago area?
I'm of 2 minds. Once a date is picked, SheepieFest! pretty much runs itself. However, I take the emotional burden and feel that if SheepieFest! isn't a success, or if people don't have a good time, it's my fault. I know it isn't, but I feel responsible for it. If we have it this year, I would like someone else to choose the location. I've picked the same place the last 3 years and paid the fee. Maybe someone knows of a location that doesn't charge.

And I agree that the weather last year played a big part in attendence. Maybe have it in September????
Paula, that's a FANTASTIC location! That huge area for the dogs to run can't be beat! How much is the fee? We'd be happy to pitch in! we're all responsible for SheepieFest!

Ok Deb, thats taking laziness just a LITTLE too far. We drive for a few "hours" just to get there. Since this may be the only sheepie event this year, I think that the attendance should be up and I for one would be very sad if we couldn't go.

If money is a problem, we would be very happy to chip in and I think the forest preserve is a great place to have it. Plenty of room to "roam"
Ok, ok....I'll get off my tush..and not be lazy!!!

Money is never a problem, since we all just take care of ourselves and a little something to share. The "little something" always turns into LOTS OF SOMETHING, so there is always plenty to eat. And yes, we all have a great time.

So, it sounds like its agreed, we'll do it, and keep it at the Shoe Factory perserve. :clappurple: Is that ok with you, Paula?

Should we shoot for a week early? Maybe September 25th?

So, how far is this terrible location from your house??? :?: 8)
Ladies, just know that the 25th many of us including Jan, Sunny and I will be on our way home from NY and the National. I don't know how much that will affect attendance overall, but just mentioning it.

September is a better month for weather, but harder to schedule due to conflicting activites.

Stacy - has Chicagoland picked a day for Dog Day's yet? Since one of the main organizer's is an OESCA board member I think we can pretty much rest assured it won't conflict with the national. And maybe scheduling for that weekend would draw more people from further afield since they can then catch both events?

Just a thought.

It's actually a wonderful location. It's about an a little over an hour from my house. But it is wonderful and worth the drive...(thanks Paula for finding it!)

Thanks for the heads up, Kristine...lets wait to hear from Stacy, and pick a convient date. You are a huge part of SheepieFest! and it wouldn't be the same without you.
The fee for the forest preserve is $100.

I don't remember the date of last year's SheepieFest! Was it the beginning of October or more towards the end? I agree that we not have it September 25th so that Kristine can be attend. So someone pick a date and I'll reserve the preserve.
Sheepiefest was in the beginning of October. I remember because it was Asterisk, Wendel, and my first time going! I think it was the 10th?
I've sent an email to Sally asking if she knows that date yet for Dog Days. It might be to early for them to have chosen a date. I'll keep you posted!

OMG!!! Paula! Why didn't you ever tell me that? You KNOW I would have split that with you!!!!!!!!!!! I feel terrible. When you get the permit this year..I will absolutely send you a check! I FEEL TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell them to get off their tushies and pick a date!
I'm told that Dog Days in Riverwoods will be in October.
Oh. My. God. PLEASE keep me informed on what ultimately happens with this. I'm new to the Chicago area... I grew up in Philadelphia and missed the Sheepdog Picnic in May so I would LOVE to go to this. I'm actually new to this message board too so if there is any other summer/fall OES stuff going on in either the PA or IL area and you think of it, drop me a line!

Thanks guys!

Wish we could go to that but we have 2 weddings that day and no sheepdog puppy until the 18th. Oh well - Next year!

Hi, Alicia! Welcome to the Chicago area! Do you have an OES? What town are you in? We're in the northern suburbs with two sheepdogs. Annie turned 13 this year and Fozzie is 4 yrs. Our upright son is about 10 month old now as well.

There are typically two events in the Chicago area in the fall. One is held by the Chicagoland OES Club and the other is Sheepiefest which is just a bunch of us crazy OES owners/lovers getting together for a picnic. Both are great. Hope to hear from you soon! I dropped you a private message as well. :D
I was just wondering about this... any dates in the works yet?
I haven't heard of any yet.
I'll be out of town Oct 3-11 so hopefully events won't conflict.
Chicago is not terribly far from us. I would love to attend something sheepie realted. My husbands Mom grew up in Chicago. He loves the city. So I'm sure we could make it.

Keep us posted

Lisa and Frankie
Yes, continue the sheepiefest!! We will be there this year!!!
I wish I knew about Sheepie Fest and the Chicagoland Event when Sammy was alive!! :( I live less than 10 minutes from Riverwoods! I never saw another OES in the 7 years we've lived in Lake Forest. Cars and people used to honk and jump out whenever they saw Sammy walking.

Would I be allowed to join in the fun even though I don't have a sheepie anymore? I would love to meet all the wonderful puppers and their people I have met on the board. :D

Of course you would be!! Paula doesn't have a sheepdog yet and she has been helping to organize this for ages. Wendel would LOVE a new person to snuggle up with!
I've organized this for the last 3 years and it's time to pass the torch to someone else. I enjoyed doing it and now someone with renewed enthusiasm needs to take over. I'll still attend of course!
Ditto!
Paula and Deb have done a GREAT job in the last few years getting this
picnic together...
I could never imagine getting it all done but, they did it!!!!
Wouldn't it be fun if some other board members set up a picnic and
invited them to RELAX!! 8)
I think they would enjoy it sooooo much! :clappurple:
I'd be more than glad to do something here in Michigan. We live on a lake have a very big fenced in yard and non fenced in yard. Would people travel? I'd help with food if someone in the chicago area wanted to do something
Any ideas?

Lisa and Frankie
Thanks Kathy. Paula is this year 8? I can't believe it! It really isn't that hard to put together, but after all this time, I think Paula and I are sort of burnt out. Paula, I hope I'm not talking about of turn.

Someone just needs to take the responsibility of finding a dog friendly forest preserve or area, hold come conversations with other about if they want to do a fundraiser, or not...(that is the most difficult part), and see if anyone is willing to bring some activities, ie: obeidence courses, agility equip etc. Oh yes...pick a date!

Everyone brings food, of which there is always an abundance!

I hope it stays in Illinois, so we can attend. Being all the way up by wisc. buts Mich and indiana out of our reach.

Thanks to everyone who volunteers to help.

PS: Paula...I miss you!
Geez, I hope we continue this! It was Asterisk, Wendel, and my first time going last year and it was awesome to finally 'meet' other members here. I live on the far west side of Illinois, so I'm hoping as well that it will stay within relative distance for travel for us!
Paula and Deb...Thanks. After reading your posts I slept very! badly last night.

After doing this for 8yrs, you'd think it would be easy

If you REALLY think you can't do this again...Let me know. MAYBE we(I say that loosely) can organize something up here(in Milwaukee).

Pam, you broke my heart! When we first started SheepieFest! we held it at Van Pattenwoods in Zion, IL (much closer to and me), and it worked out great for Wisc and Illinois people. Maybe that is something that should be revisited.

It's very sad for me too, to lose SheepieFest! I started it the first year I had Pirate, because I was so jealous of NEOESR picnic, and Pirate and I didn't know any other sheepies. Pirate, even though "fairly" youthful he is getting up in years. And to me, SheepieFest! will always be PirateFest!!!
SheepieFest! What a great idea!!! My husband and I just rescued a 2 year old, Nola, from Georgia. We get her in two weeks! I would LOVE to help organize the event. :D

-Kate

PS- we have a doodle as well...are non OES dogs allowed at Sheepiefest? :?: :?:

Yeppers! Last year, Heather's Marley was there, she's the cutest little Wheaton you've ever seen.
ALL dogs are welcome at SheepieFest! Heck, I don't even have a dog and I go!

Someone (anyone? Bueller? ) needs to pick a date and place..... :plead:
Thanks Everyone! I can't wait to join this GREAT group!

I would love to help plan. If someone is willing to take charge I am willing and able to be a part. Normally I would take charge but as I'm a newbie I don't want to "mess it up".

So with that said, I am in Elgin, IL so am relatively close to all places mentioned. :)

-Kate
Hey, I'm officially set up! woohoo! :clappurple:

Here's a pic of Nola, our new OES!!!!
Hi and welcome !!!!! :D
I am so in for SheepieFest, have we agreed on a date?
Ah! What's going on? The forest preserve has been fantastic the past few years. Can't we do it there again? The picnic pretty much runs itself. Unfortunately, we're out of town a few weekends in Oct so hopefully we can pick another date. Maybe the end of September???
I live a distance, but I'd be willing to help out in planning. I would for sure bring Asterisk and Wendel. I don't know if Levi could come since his recall is still not the greatest and I don't trust him in unfenced areas.

Let me know if I can help!

Unfortunately the picnic does not run itself. The forest preserve we've used the last few years has to be reserved and there is $100 charge that I paid out of my own pocket. The date has to be picked, activities planned, food lined up, etc. I enjoyed doing it but my time is over. Someone else will have to be the organizer.
What about the dog park in Dundee? There's a great side yard that's fenced in, has a few picnic tables and would be perfect for a party! It's hardly ever used!

Ok...Its clear that Paula DOES NOT WANT TO DO IT THIS YEAR. Thats fine but I would hate to see this die.

It seems there are quite a few people interested and we need to get this going.

#1 We need someone who will take charge. That means picking a spot. It seems we have a few possiblities, ie the forest preserve, or the dog park in Dundee. If its the forest preserve we can all pitch in to pay for it.

#2Any activities? Do we need this? Can't we just get together and have fun?

#3Food...This is a must :D and we can all bring something or bring your own and again it would be up to the person in charge. The sub worked great for the last two years that I went.

#4A date!!! This MUST be done SOON!!!! Some mentioned the end of Sept. and some mentioned in Oct. Again this would be up to the person in charge(can I just mention that I have ONE weekend that I don't have to work and its The first weekend in Oct)

Anyone willing to step forward?

Ok thats out of the way. At the risk of breaking Paula's heart...I am offering up my house and VERY large fenced in back yard to do it this year. It would mean moving it from IL to WI(I live in the Milwaukee area).
Pam, thanks for the well-done summary. It appears people still want it, but nobody wants to be alpha. If SheepieFest! gets moved to Wisconsin, I have no problem driving there.
Thanks, Pam! Very nice of you to offer your yard! I too would hate to see SheepieFest go. I can't take lead this year with too much going on but maybe in the future... I wonder where the twins are???

Unfortunately, we'll be out of town the first and second weekends in October. I guess we've been spoiled and the event has been really close to home which has been great.

Miss everyone!
Oh yea and the Chicagoland OES Event is on Oct 24. Here's the link I just posted:

viewtopic.php?f=35&t=30901
I have no issue driving to Milwaukee. I live about 4 hours from there. I wish I could help be the Alpha, but I'm afraid that I live too far away for people to want to drive to the far west side of Illinois/east side of Iowa.

Food should be easy, didn't we just bring food to share? I'd be happy to just let the dogs run, if it were an enclosed area then Levi could come too!

Unfortunately, the first weekend of October is Gramma and Grampa's 60th wedding anniversary, so I don't think we'd be able to make it...
Pam, thanks so much for volunteering your house!

Well, since it appears that no one is willing then I have the energy and some time to dedicate to making this a great event. I can take over and be the "leader"!

As this is my first year and I don't know anyone I would love for some small introductions and what is an available date for everyone to participate.

1- Pam is RIGHT! We need a date and we need it now! :D I am also busy the first week of October. Maybe the 2nd or 3rd week? This, of course, would risk colder weather! Would anyone be able to do next few weekends? Sept 17th or 18th or Sept 25th or 26th?

2- I think the best way for food would be a potluck! Once I get a number of participants I can distribute a food list...

3- I will start looking at activities for the day. I assume that the amount of activities will depend on where we have the event...which leads me to...

4- I think the best places at the moment are either Pam's house or Dundee Dog Park. Both are free and accessible.

Thoughts? Questions? Comments?

If everyone could PM me and give me the best date for you and alternative dates if possible! I would also love any new or expanding ideas!

Thanks!
Hi Kate...Thanks for stepping forward. I've met most everyone before and I still have to ask for names of the people...the dogs are the ones I know best :D

Our little bio: There is myself, dh Randy, and our Oes, Simon and Garfunkel. Both dogs are involved in agility and I'm hoping that someday soon I'll get brave enough and enter Simon in some trials. My home is still open but if you decide on the dog park thats fine and I'll help in any way I can.

As for dates I'm really stuck on that. As I said the weekend of the 1st in Oct. but that seems to be bad for some people. My next open weekend is Oct 16th. I'll check with my co-workers to see if someone will switch around with me...but I won't hold my breath.

Feel free to pm me and as I said, I'll help in any way I can!
Since I'm closer to Dundee, I vote for that (being selfish) but I have no problem going to Milwaukee. Dates that do NOT work for me are the rest of September and October 23/24.

It's just me. No spouse, SO or dogs......

We traditionally do a pot luck so that's probably the easiest to continue.

Thank you for stepping up. It will be a success. How can you go wrong with a bunch of sheepdogs?
Sorry, I have not posted...right now Amanda and my weekends are pretty flexible. If anyone needs help with set up or whatnot we are available. Obviously being in Elgin, I vote for Dundee as well  , but am willing to drive to Milwaukee.
Hi all. Paula, I love you. thank you for pointing out all the pitfalls of putting this together. I don't think anyone realized that SheepieFest! didn't just "happen".

I'm closer to Milwaukee, but have car...will travel.

Thank all of you who will keep the SheepieFest! legion alive. It is still very dear to me. I'm just getting old and tired.

Paula, and anyone else: are ya up for an onyum loaf one day soon? Let me know.

Love to all of you!
I've been giving this serious thought today. I think we should take Pam up on her gracious offer. Seriously. For the past 3 years SheepieFest! has been in my neck of the woods, and Pam and Kristine and Deborah and lots of others have come from northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin. And there are a few new people up the north shore. So I think it's time we went up to them.

But Pam, if you don't want to host or have made other arrangements with Kate, I understand.

P.S. I was at Hackney's a few weeks ago, but the person I was with doesn't like onyum rings. How can she be my friend???
Paula O. wrote:

Absolutely not. No, period.

SO good to see you Deb! I've missed you and your stories :( How are things going???
Hello All Sheepie Fest fans!

I've decided that the weekend of October 16th is the best date for everyone. It seems that most of us are open this weekend and, with some luck, the weather will be on our side.

I've done some research into different places. There are 3 that stick out as definite possibilites! Pam's place, if it's still available is a great option! The other is a rescue facility/dog park in Freeport, IL (from memory). They have an enclosed dog park and an agility training course! The third is a dog park in Naperville. It's a great facility with picnic tables and an enclosed park area for the dogs to run around.

This seems like a good start!

Let's plan on the 16th and the place will be TBD til I can talk to Pam and the other facilities.
Cool! I put the 16th on my calendar. Fingers crossed that the weather cooperates.
Great!! I'll mark my calendar. Just let me know of what place you decide. I'm all the way on the border of Illinois/Iowa; Chicago area is about 2.5 hours from me.

I hope that you have chosen enclosed areas so that Levi can come, too!!

All 3 possibilities are enclosed so we can count Levi in!!! :clappurple:
This sounds like a blast. To bad I live in Texas, Im a little jealous yall get together every year. It would be so neat to see a bunch of Sheepies getting to play and run together. What a great time. Have fun everyone and post some pics for those of us to far to join in. :D
Is this event open to future OES owners? I've been wanting one for a while now but would like to spend some more time around them, this event seems perfect! I live in Milwaukee.

Christine
I can't believe I missed this topic for so long!!

I hate to further confuse the issue, but I am throwing a fundraiser in Kenosha, WI on Sunday October 10 from 10am-5pm. It is at Lure Coursing Fanatics and there would be more than enough room to make it Sheepiefest as well. Plus Rudie will already be there ;)

I can provide the food/drinks and have already booked the lure course. I don't want to step on any plans already made, but just wanted to extend the idea.

If you decide to go with something else, let me know what I can do to help!
Christine, SheepieFest! welcomes everyone, with or without dogs. I don't own a dog, yet have been to every SheepieFest!
Hi Heather,

Tell about this place you booked. Lure course would be great fun.

What do you mean about a fundraiser?

Is it just for sheepies or for other dogs too?

Is it fenced?

And you said Oct 10(which really sucks for me...but maybe I can switch)

Kate, what do you think about this?
Here is the website for the place: http://www.lurecoursingfanatics.com/

The lure course itself is fenced in, but I am not sure about the rest of it, I will put an email in and ask. It is a rural area though so it would be much like the forest preserve we've had it in years past.

The fundraiser is for the dog rescue I work with which is an all breed rescue (we've had 3 sheepdogs so far though!). We're called One Tail at a Time, www.onetail.org. We're raising funds by charging for the lure course runs. It's $5 a run or $20 unlimited runs ($5 each additional dog).

There will be other dogs there as well. We're providing a light lunch and treats for the dogs, but if you all wanted to bring some other food that would be just fine as well.

I know we typically raised money for Midwest OES rescue in the past at these events, and I would be open into incorporating a way to do that here as well. Maybe a portion of sheepdog runs can go to them? Or part of the 50/50 raffle money?

It's just an option if people are interested, I think it would be really fun to see all the sheepies do lure coursing, but there will be all those pesky other breeds to deal with ;)
This sounds like a great idea! Is everyone up for it???
Sounds perfect to me. SheepieFest! can have its own area (love the "pesky other breeds" comment Heather) so we can socialize amongst our own. Or join those other people. Who know, they might have great food!

Since it's the weekend I don't care how I look in glasses. It's only during the work week that the glasses annoy me!
I posted a poll so we can keep track of votes:

please vote asap so we can get crackin' on plans!
All rightie then! Sheepiefest is officially on October 16th! Details to come tomorrow!!!!

Please let me know ASAP if you're planning to attend!

Thanks all!

Woo, thanks for planning Kate!

I'll be there with my husband, one half sheepdog, and one wheaten terrier. I'm happy to bring something for the potluck and a raffle prize.
I'll be there with my Trifecta! I'd bring Josh, but he really worries over the dogs, so it's best if he stays home.

I can also bring a dish and a silent auction prize.
Oy! I can't believe I'm not getting these updates. Kate, I don't know you but I love you! Well, we're definitely avail Oct 16 so I got all hyped. Can't do Oct 10 as we'll just be getting back from vacation. I'm not much help this year, sorry :( If you do, the 16th Foz will be there with bells on!
So it looks like we're going with Naperville! Woohoo! It looks like the best spot is Whalon Lake. However, to reserve you have to do so in person at the office in Joliet. Hours are 8am to 4pm Monday - Friday.

The place looks great, our date and time is available, and we can reserve a picnic sight for relatively cheap.

Now, Down to business:

1- Is anyone in the Joliet area that would be willing to go and fill out the necessary forms. The fee is $50 for Will County residents so that would be preferable ($100 for non-residents)

2- The fee is $3 per dog and the form has to be submitted ahead of time. You can print up the form at:
http://www.reconnectwithnature.org/preserves-trails/dog-parks (click on the dog park brochure link towards the bottom of the page)
http://www.reconnectwithnature.org/preserves-trails/Whalon-Lake (this is the site that looks best for our group)

3- So far we have 7 people with 8 dogs (Stacey, I guestimated for you as you didn't specify)

4- If no one can get to Joliet this week then we should stick with last years park? Paula, can you email me the info?

Thanks everyone!
Are you sure out of county dogs can go in for just $3?

Yup, it specifies on the website and I did double check with the lady at the park district. :clappurple:

PS - sorry I misspelled your name
