Saving my Dad! I need help.

My Dad is going to sit and mourn himself to death over his beloved dog Rowdy. Rowdy, much to all of our dismay, developed bone cancer at the age of 6 and through all of our efforts actually lived several more months than prediceted. This is Dad's second OES, Pandy made it to 14 and he had Rowdy several months before she passed on. He has had an OES for his constant companion for 20 years. My Mom is a workaholic and is hardly ever home.

We are in the southwest and unable to travel more than CA, NV, UT, WY, ID, AZ to pick up a dog for him. We are desperate to find another OES for him, preferably under 6 months old. We can provide veterinary, groomer, neighbor, family, everyone in this town references. Almost everyone knew Rowdy. We can pay up to $400.00 and are looking for a companion dog only, male or female.

I know most of you know exactly how Dad feels, we all loved Rowdy and none of us can seem to stop crying. We thought he would not want another OES, but he has expressed a wish for another one. If you know of anything please call me at 435-632-6645. Dee Sherman, Mesquite Nevada

Check with the rescue groups in your section of the country. Contacts are listed on the OESCA website : http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org.

Sometimes they get young dogs in as well as some that are just 2-3 years too. Last year I transported a 14 week old puppy for rescue in our area. People had bought her at 8 weeks of age & after 6 weeks decided it wasn't the breed for them 8O .
Thanks Marilyn;

I hit the rescue groups first and it seems that everything currently available needs surgery or they are in the midwest. Dad ended up with Rowdy because of the same situation as your transport dog. The lady who originally bought him had a small dog who was not about to get along with the puppy monster. I also hit the internet for sales and did not find anything very close or within the price range we could afford. I realize that it is not enough for most breeders, but I can't stand to see my dad cry anymore. There were some puppies born in CA about 3 weeks ago and if I do not find something in the mean time, I will go there and plead and beg!

I appreciate your reply and will continue to monitor.

I would also try contracting rescue groups outside of your list of states. I think that some are willing to fly the dogs and I think that someone acutally went that route recently and had the pupper flown from FL and then they drove and picked him up at the airport??? Hey wasn't the Rudy??? He has a blog on the website and you should be able to search for the link. I think he went from FL up towrds WI if I am remembering. Since you are mentioning limited funding and that your dad has had rescues in the past I would think that the adoption fee and airline ticket might be close to the number that you mentioned. It is worth a try contacting all of them and sending an e-mail.

I adopted Bella and she wasn't even on the web page. Madeline (NY) responded to my email and we talked on the phone. It happens that she was getting in two rescues that weekend and I was able to get Bella a week later.

You did not mention how old your dad was and if he wanted a puppy or a youngster. Again it would be best to talk with the rescue directly and they will have evaluated the dogs and find a match for your dad.
http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displa ... d=15772163 they might ship !! i know south fla rescue does they have plenty
I'm pretty sure Fiona has Harley; she mentioned him when I talked to her the other day, and I didn't put two and two together.

I don't know if we do fly dogs; but why not try dropping her a message? She's here on the boards as "Fiona"; you can send her a Private message through her profile page:

I'm so sorry for your dad. I don't know if this boy is still available... and he's older than you had hoped for. Also appears to still need a little work on housetraining. Maybe bring someone dog experienced along to see if his temperament is right before you take him in... like a trainer.

We have been the foster parents to a wonderful Old English Sheepdog but he now needs a permanant home to call his own. His is a full blooded Old English Sheepdog but does not have papers. He is approximately 2 years old, very mellow, will follow you everywhere and is generally very well behaved. He is mostly housebroken but sill needs a little work on that as well as some additional obedience training but his sweet nature and adorable face make up for any shortcomings in the training department. We are not charging a rehoming fee but would welcome any contribution to offset the costs we have incurred while getting him ready for adoption.

He is neutered, up to date on all his shots and microchipped.

If you are interested in learning more about "Lucky" or seeing his picture, please e-mail us. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for all of your ideas and information. I have emailed the people on craigslist. They are only 85 miles from where I live. I will let you know how it goes.
