Grooming accident!

This weekend I finally realized that I had to shave the dogs. Their legs have gotten so matted that it would be too much to try to brush them out. I still have yet to perfect my grooming sheepdogs legs (especially front legs) down to a science yet.

I need to back up a bit and give you some info. On Friday, Asterisk got her hips x-rayed. No problems, but since we're starting agility next month, I just wanted to see if they were sound. Her X-rays were great! Perfectly normal, beautiful hips! So the vet had shaved her right leg with must have been like a 40. It's really really short, to the skin.

So I was shaving her yesterday and there are some pretty tight mats at her legs. I took out my sheers and then I hear a yelp. I put everything down and look at Asterisk. She's just looking at me. I look at her leg and a tear of blood slowly trickled down. I look closer and the mat I was working on was just ABOVE the place where the vet had shaved her leg. There is a clean one inch cut. I panic.

I start to tear up and call to Josh. He comes running down stares and panics as well. He starts to yell at me until he sees all the tears streaming down my face. Meanwhile, Asterisk is just sitting there looking at us. We get her down and put her in the car. She's licking at the blood but will stop when we tell her to. I didn't care that she looked comical. I had only done 3/4 of the shave work. She still had her right back and front legs not shaved and a strip on her chest.

When we get to the Emergency Vet, the techs said "oh, must be grooming day, we just had one come in before you". Long story short, $400.45 later, we get to take her home. I feel TERRIBLE, like I'm the worst person in the world. I never ever thought, as cliche as this sounds, that this would happen to me. I couldn't believe I cut my own dog. Asterisk has been fine. She hasn't touched her stitches, and really doesn't seem to notice that they're there.

She seemed to have forgiven me the second after it happened. She's still wiggling, snuggling, and loving on me. I feel so upset with myself.

Sorry for the long post, I just had to vent to people who could understand my panic and heartache.

   ...Things like this happen, and I am certain the you are beating yourself up more than you need to...The great things about our sheepies, is they are very forgiving!!! And, like you said, Asterik has forgotten all about it!!! :D

To make you feel better, that you are not alone...~~~~~ I have trimmed Pearl's mouth..*(you know, how the hairs grow into their mouths?) and have 'accendentally' snipped her tongue...   I feel so bad, but I justify it by thinking that I my intentions are good...I love her to bits...and I am a klutz....
If it makes you feel any better, the first time I clipped Jake I gave him a bad razor burn-- on his penis.
you people are dangerous!!!! :cow:

yes, we know you luv your pups.
;-)
It happens to all of us at one time or another  . A long time ago, on the day before New Year's Eve, I shaved down Melody. On New Year's Eve we were staying home & I decided to finish up the last bits of trimming on her shave down (you know, feet, nails, stray hairs around the mouth & chin area that for some reason hide from the clippers). I should have known better with Melody. She always needed to know exactly what was going on & try to be in charge even tho' she knew I was a step above her & respected me. Out came the tongue as I was snipping some stray hairs around the chin. 8O . You guessed it. She had to "feel" what I was doing in that area since her vision couldn't see under her chin. BLOOD EVERYWHERE! Of course she was shave down (which makes them NOT look like an OES) & she insisted on trying to clean the blood off her chest & front legs by licking with her bleeding tongue. By the time we got to the emergency clinic she looked like her entire front was dripping in blood. It took them 20 minutes to decide they couldn't stop the flow of blood & were going to have to stitch her tongue! Almost $200.00 laster we left the clinic with a non-dripping tongue but still a dog with blood all over the front 1/2 of her body. What a way to spend New Year's Eve!
They are so forgiving aren't they? And I'm happy to hear all is well now. I think we all understand your panic and heartache.

I once got Theeper's toenail. He squealed in the moment but was just fine after. The room looked like a crime scene though. I didn't know a dog contained that much blood. And he never slowed down, not even for a minute. Most of it landed on a plastic mat, and it was actually in a pool that spread at least a foot and a half.

I was a wreck. He just waited patiently for me to clean it up. He loved napping on that cool spot.

As for hair grooming incidents, I'm no good with scissors at all. I avoid them nearly all the time. I've had great success with clippers and have used them without incident over every square inch of our dogs, including faces and paw pads. If I do have to use scissors the dog must be tied AND held by hubby so there's no chance at all.

A friend of mine dropped her clippers while they were on (a very old, very ancient set) and caused a great deal of damage to her dog's "boy bits." She rushed him to the vet and all was well in time, but she says he never forgave her or trusted her again. I guess in that situation I can understand it.
Thank for you for the well wishes. I still feel horrible, but you're right. Asterisk seems to not even mind the stitches. The wound isn't as red as it was yesterday either. She and Wendel wanted to go out, I thought just to use the facilities but, nope, ZOOM! Off they went running and then WRESTLING! I almost died in my shoes! There they were, rough housing and I kept calling to them. They didn't care, they were just bouncing and zooming all over the yard. When I finally got them in, Asterisk's stitches were just fine. I guess I'll have to put a shirt on her when she goes out till they are healed.
You were just trying to help! We gave Lola razor burn when we had to shave her down when we first got her. Good thing she was forgiving. 8O
It happens to the best of us, wont tell you about the time I was trimming the hair between Kelseys Pads, snip snip, chook kick and OUCH part of the pad cut with razor sharp scissors. Blood everywhere, felt awfulll, days of bandages and a sock on her foot and mummy feeling like **** wish we could swear but I am sure you get the drift of the **** message.

It happens so dont feel horrible. We all try our best but sometimes things like this happens. :?
Its happened to us too :( The tongue, ears, and in my poor girl Abby's case, nipples ( 8O  ) being the scary parts. I almost wanted to cry myself, reading your description...poor Asterisk! Poor you!
I chopped Clyde's ear once. I was more upset than he was. I have near misses all the time!

Oh dear. 8O
Mercifully, I do not have a story to share.
it could be that my dog's were always groomed by professionals because for whatever unknown reason my father decided to cut my hair when i was a lil shaver.
i remember like yesterday those shears, when the final 1/2" of their 6" length came together slicing my ear. i of course bled like a stuck pig. only time i remember mom actually putting her foot down w/him. another interesting note, only females are allowed to cut my hair and the dogs. :D

p.s. even the pro's have lil accidents occasionally.
I have cut human hair professionally, and I am betting that it is much harder to clip and snip a pooch. So I am so grateful that you all have shared your stories so when my time comes I will remember your words of wisdom! :? I actually was looking forward to working on him but now I think I will wait for as long as I can, lol. Is there any good books on Grooming?

You know, I haven't seen any grooming books on OES particularly. I have seen some dynamite photo essays on how to brush out and dematt your dog. Carl Lindon and Willowsprite have some great essays on this.

I haven't found one yet on shaving yet.
I would love to see a picture essay like they have for the line grooming and the ears. I have asked about the shaving and did try a little in the groin and armpit area as suggested. The job is NOT pretty. The groin looks ok but I want somwhere off course in the arm pit area and one is better than the other. They also talked about shaving the belly but pics showing how to do the "blending" into the body area would help for us chickens
I'll try and take pictures - Chewie is due for a shave and trim. Not sure when I'll get to it - hopefully before this weekend.
