So people with iPhones, am I reading that correctly? In addition to a calling plan I have an additional $30 a month charge just for having the phone? If so, maybe it isn't really a cost savings. |

The data charge is for use of the internet on the phone via the 3G network, so you have internet everywhere you go. It isn't just a surcharge-- you do get something for it! |
Yes, you are reading that correctly. The $30 data plan includes internet, email and of course, access to any of the internet based apps you might add - keep in mind it does not include texting. If you have more than one line on ATT and have the unlimited family plan texting then you don't have to add texting, but if you don't have a text plan then you would (if you text, that is!). |
Yes, the minimum useful plan if you do any texting at all is around $100 with taxes and so forth. |
thought i'd mention that some friends and relatives are retaining their landlines yet as they can be traced and tracked for location immediately for emergencies vs. cells cannot yet in alot of locations. |
I had lunch with Debcram, Amanda P. and Melissa P. today and they all have iPhones and I don't (pout). But my main consideration is cost so right now I won't be getting one. But I know myself--I'll decide one day I will die without it and will buy one on the spur of the moment.
I don't text. |

I was looking at new phones at Verizon Wireless.com and the smart phones and internet phones all require a data plan. I was thinking of upgrading to a new phone but not now. I don't like the fact they can force you to have to get a plan that you may not use. |

I have a wonderful pre-paid plan with T-Mobile. If I purchase a $100.00 card it's good for a year and I always have mins left. If I renew before the year is up the remaining mins roll-over. It has been great for me esp. since I retired. We are going to be spending more time in FL, and I would like to have internet access. I have thought about the stick that plugs into my laptop. Does anyone have any experience with these?? Or would I be better off with an i-phone or blackberry and plug my laptop into it? |
I have a data card (the little stick) and I love it. It really depends on what you want to do--if you use your computer the most the data card makes a lot of sense especially if you go to places where they charge to connect to their wi-fi-hotels, coffee shops etc. I have found that mine will usually work in the car as well (not everywhere) but a lot of places. I use my iphone a lot too--but I like this when I want to use the computer away from home. I travel quite a bit. I think I pay 35.00 per month and there was a charge for the hardware but I use it a lot and I think that the investment has been worth it for me. Mine is through Verizon but I know that most all the carriers have them and they are about the same cost from what I have heard. Mine is not unlimited usage but I have never gone over the minimum because it is so much. The one downside is that if you watch a lot of movies etc. it will eat up the time per month faster. |
