I had a reaction to painkillers

I had a headache, which is unusual, so I waited until I had dinner then took 2 Nurofen Plus (Ibuprofen and Codeine) tablets before I went to bed. I've taken these before, the last time was probably before Christmas and never had any problems. But within 20 minutes I felt like I was getting a cough, I quickly became all wheezy and was finding it difficult to breathe. "Great" I thought, "I'm coming down with a cold". A few minutes later my left eyelid and the part that joins the nose started to swell. I thought I must have a dog hair in there and went to the mirror. Then my lips started to ulcer up, I get that sometimes if I have too much apple. At this point I knew it was an allergy and didn't know what to put it down to. Until I read the leaflet with the Nurofens which explained an allergic reaction would yield these symptoms. I quickly took a 12 hour antihistamine- which could have been a mistake- as after I read the side effects and to my horror saw that it's possible to have the same effects from those

I stayed awake all night drinking lots of water to try & flush it through. My breathing was OK so I didn't let Greg take me to emergency. My eye swelled so much I couldn't see and my lips were like fat sausages. I looked like I had just been in a boxing match. My hands were a little itchy too. This lasted for 12 hours, then slowly started to go back to normal but I felt really tired and like I had a hangover for the next few days.

So what else could I be allergic to? I'm going to get to the doctor next week and ask for allergy testing. It was a frightening episode and I've basically lived on rice and 'safe' foods since. Strange that I was OK before but reacted to it so suddenly. I didn't eat anything unusual either so I'm sure it was the meds :lmt:

You are brave (and maybe foolish!) 8O for not going in.
Reactions tend to get worse with each exposure, so not quite the thing to gamble on.

But - I'm really glad you are OK now!!!! :D
I react to codeine found that out a long time ago with some cold & flu tablets I took.

So now I look at labels when taking anything to avoid anything that has codeine in it.

Taking it I got short of breath, my heart raced and and I swelled up in the face.

Really any reaction to anything you should rush yourself to a doctor it can turn deadly so fast.
Yes, they are certainly cumulative. When at the doc ask about a script for an Epi pen.......just in case you aren't close to hospital or emegency clinic.
Hi that was scary. you really should have gone to A & E or rung 24 hour doc up. I hope you get to the gp and get sorted xx
I had a real problem with a pain killer years ago that the
doctor told me was a "psychotic episode". Very very scary,
and I NEVER want to go through that again. Of course, Vic says
it had nothing to do with the drug! I have a problem
with sulfa - anything opiate- and most antibiotics, very similar
to what you had. That can go from bad to tragic very quickly.
Now you know what to look for. Hope that doesn't happen again!
