I will put up pictures as soon as i can figure out how to. Bentley is doing great except a couple of issues. 1) he seems not to be able to play by himself with me in kitchen with him. 2) he plays with one of my maltese dogs who is 11 lbs, Bentley is now hitting 60lbs!!! He gets Romeo all wet and is ruining his coat. Not sure how to teach him to play right. 3) if he wants my attention or any other dogs attention, he has a very high pitched bark that he will do. i am in training with him. i do what i know to stop the behavior but was wondering what you do. He's also eating poop!!! had his second grooming with the groomer and she said his submissive peeing is getting better. we think so to at home. thanks for your help. hope all is well with everyone. lynnewithbentley |

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like he needs training on a consistent basis. They are very demanding, so you need to train so you are the leader and he is the follower. There is a lot of good advice on the forum, so do look around as am confident your issues will be addressed by those more expert than me. We look forward to pics. |
My friend's 12 week old puppy began to eat poo, and her vet gave her a sprinkle for the food. It makes the poop distasteful!! Anyway, it worked, no more between meal snacks! I don't think its too unusual for pups to do this, ugh. I know I've read some posts on this forum about it. |
Sounds like he is playing like an OES - can't change his nature.
I put Accent meat tenderizer on Morgan's food when he did this (from the time we got him until we swtiched to raw food). |

That was my first thought. How very OES! You can teach him what is appropriate play with YOU, but. like Kerry said, playing with other dogs, not so much. The other dogs are the only ones who can truly get him to change his evil OES ways by telling him he either plays by their rules or not at all. If they won't do that, it's kind of hard to do much more than manage the situation. How is the poor Romeo getting all wet? Is he mouthing or licking him , or...? Poor Romeo. It's hard to get the lady dogs to take you seriously when you look like a used wash cloth KB |
Tonks plays "too rough" with puppies and small breed dogs. that is to say, she races towards them and pounces, usually terrifying them and rolling htem over in the process. About 2 in 10 of these dogs get it, and play rough back. But I worry about the other 8. The behavior comes across as aggressive, even though Tonks isn't biting or actually attacking.
I wouldn't call getting your Maltese wet and ruining her coat "playing too rough". I'd call that typical. We were at risk of being asked to keep Tonks on leash at the park; I call that "too rough". I took the issue to my trainer, and Tonks now has a gentle command. When I see a puppy we don't know, or a toy breed, I tell Tonks "Gentle" and she immediately stops her mad dash to go play, and walks up and sniffs at them politely. Most of the time. As for poo-eating, Tonks did that too. I found the "leave it" command usually works for this. She never ate her own poo, or Luna's poo, so she was only a snack-risk at the park, where I watch her all the time. So I was available to give her the Leave It command when i saw her get too interested in something on the round that she shouldn't. |
Well i guess mine is doing it too. He never did till now and he will be 3 in july. Yes i guess its an oes thing. Well he brought it in froozen and I just thought it was a stick and took it away and omg poooooooo.......
So I guess when i said i was glad mine didnt do that well now i have to eat my words. Yes the rough house is also common with the smaller greeds all thos some of them small dogs will put him in his place we just have to rember they will work them selves out as long as they are social. Just a few times i ran into a dog that dint like mine and he knew it and kept away. Or when they barked back he knew they meant it and to back off. Yes Bella my sisters maltise is all wet to when they play but i tell you she will come hump his head in a heart beat so i guess its true love. sniff but say hi and go gang busters with loud barking and jumping. Got to love these dogs. have fun and i guess enjoy the show and lots of grooming or seperate them. Then they wont be happy tho. |
The poop eating isn't an OES thing - it is happening in all other dogs pretty universally as well. I have lots of basset friends who have poop-cicle eaters too. People in my classes with all breeds of dogs ask about it too. |
I think the poop thing is really a reflection of how the food is being processed - or not. |
Thank you so much for the Accent tip! I went out last weekend and bought some to see if it would work with my shishapoo's they have been eating poo for quite sometime and it totally would gross me out! I tried the pills a long time ago and they didn't work but yes the Accent works!!!! So about the rough housing between the small dogs and my sheepie puppy I should just leave it and they will work it out???? |
