Oliver seems really clumsy

Hello got my new puppy yesterday. Now let me remind you that I have 2 small dogs. They are totally different then a OES. Oliver seems so clumsy is this a trait with the breed. He reminds me of a young boy trying to grow into his feet, :D . Is this normal? Sometimes he doesn't know to sit and itch so he trys to do itch while standing or walking. It is really funny but just wondering if this is normal. He is a really great pup except for the sleeping. My 17 yearold couldn't stand him whining so she slept with him last night. I wonder how long that will last :D

Hello :)
Yes that sounds normal to me, Rufus still tries to scratch while standing at age 2.5 years.
YOU decide how you want to sleep, Rufus cried for 2 nights but then got used to sleeping on his own -because we didn't cave in he learned quick. If your pup knows that crying will make someone sleep with him, he will use that to his advantage, they are very clever like that
I got Asterisk as a puppy and she cried a lot when we first got her. I think she was lonely since she was separated from her litter-mates and her mother. We used to have her sleep with some plushies. As she aged this diminished.

Wendel still stands to scratch and he's 4. He also likes to wrap his arms around your waist or your shoulders if your kneeling. If you scratch his belly when he's like this, his back leg will start kicking in the air when you get just the right spot.
yep, silly scratchin will go on. whining should stop shortly. ;-)
as said, if you don't give in.
Remember an OES has a lot of growing to do in a short time. Not everything grows at the same rate, so, yes there are many awkward periods. Also an adult OES will move differently at times than many other breeds. The bear shuffle is great fun to watch.

Your baby dogs matured quickly......a sheepie will take a year or so to "finalize." Brains......that's another story. What may appear as "dumb" is just an OES finding the fun side of life. Learn to smile and laugh.
Both of our OES' were and are clumsy. As puppies they always ran into walls, and could never figure out which side the door opens even if it was their 1000th trip out that door. ;)
Tonks and Luna were clumsy puppies, but became very agile adults. I think being an infant is just disorienting an everything is new. So some clumsiness is going to happen.

Since I got two puppies, they never cried at night. Of course, I would dream they did, and would wake up several times a night thinking I heard them cry. Then I'd sneak into the kitchen where we crated them to make sure that they were okay, and end up cuddling with them.
Sounds like normal sheepie behavior to me. I've had 3 and they all tried to scratch while standing.
I was jogging with Bella a few weeks after I got her and someone had put up posts at the end of their driveway to mark for th snow plows. Our jog was going good until Bella turned her head to look at a bird. She drifted to the left a little and because her head was turned ran strait into the metal post. It stopped her dead in her tracks and she was "what happend, where did that thing jump out of 8O " I had to stop running I was laughing so hard.

A few weeks later she was running around the yard with Dexter turned her head and ran right into my legs. I hope she never looses that "clumsiness" she keeps me laughing and makes me smile :!:
Yep. Standing and scratching is normal. Enjoy the show. We had one sheepie who, for his first two or three years, would squat down to poop, and lift both back legs off the ground, balancing on his front feet only.

It usually worked for him. Looked funny as heck to the rest of us. Occasionally he's lose his balance and topple over, but fortunately it was early enough in the process that there was nothing unpleasant to land in.

Now our Rudy's quirk is to come up on the bed, lay on his back, and wiggle around upside down all over the bed until he slides off and lands on his head. I've grabbed him a few times on his way down, but he just seems to roll into it head first happily.

He's over a year. Sheepdogs are just plain goofy.
