Although it may not look too impressive yet...these photos represent a bunch of work and progress! this was our "hot tub" last week, after cutting everything to length, and stacking it with spacers so the wood could dry very thoroughly. This is the same stack of wood, (under the table) but now cut into 80 "staves" that have an incredibly accurate bevel and angle cut into them, so as to form a circle when assembled. Bert is loving hanging out in the woodworking studio. Tons of attention, and he's being really good about staying out from underfoot here's him and his new buddy Carbon, all tired out from a hard day of watching people work, and chewing on wood scraps Scott, modeling in front of an almost finished sauna. One of these might be our next project! |

I thought that looked like a sauna. How cool.
I can smell the cut wood. I just love that smell. Beautiful work Looks like alot of fun, probably hard work but fun. Lisa |
Nice Work! |
I still cannot believe you guys are learning to do that AND did that. It looks so nice. |
Cutting staves is an art, even with modern tools. Imagine doing it by hand as years ago! I tip my hat to you for even considering such a project.
I too love the smell of saw dust.........hmmmmm How will you heat your eventual tub.....wood heater? |
Well...we cant take any credit for that sauna!!! That's a project that Mark (the owner/instructor) is doing! All we have done at this stage is chop up wood into smaller bits!
I kept trying to get decent photos of the guys (there are six students in the class) working wood with hand-tools etc, but they all came out really bad. Nothing but broad backs and blurred hands Tuesday is our next class...Ill try to do better! |
WOW! How cool. I first thought "she meant coppering, like copper enameling." What a neat thing to learn. |

I too love the smell of saw dust.........hmmmmm How will you heat your eventual tub.....wood heater? Yup...a "Snorkel Stove", which is a submerged wood fired heater. We are doing most of the work with power tools, but the instructor is also showing us how to do the same work with hand tools. Oh yes...the shop smells sooooo wonderful! Not quite so enthralled with brushing wood shavings and sawdust out of my dog's fur, though |
Very cool!
Pretty nice you can bring Eggbert to class as well |
Thank you for the update on your project. I will be looking forward to this weeks pics. It is great that you and Scot are having such fun, minus the wood shavings in Egburt. |
Very nice. You will be so happy when it gets done. Then I will show it to Lee and tell him I want one and would he mind making it for me. |

Although it may not look too impressive yet...these photos represent a bunch of work and progress! I know I'm a total dork... but the first thing that came to mind was - JENGA!! ahem, you may now go back to your normally scheduled program. |
very cool can't wait till we see it finished |
congrats on your wood project I'll bet you will love it . I made 5 roll top trunks , cut the slat angles on the table saw and then used a hand tool to shave the edges to round them and boy it was a lot of work and then I carved pics on the top of each one .this is one of them

That stuff is amazing, we just watched a program the other day where they were taking huge old barrels apart and making smaller ones with the same wood, it was really fascinating. I can smell the wood too, YUMMY! |

That's gorgeous Jean! Im going to try doing a little carving demo for my class , since I used to do a lot of woodblocks for printing. Several other students who have specialized knowledge are going to do demos or mini classes too. Oooooh...welding!!! Im not sure if Ill be brave enough to carve directly on the staves, though ...I was kinda thinking of separate decorative panels. You may have inspired me to be more daring though, as that really looks good, carved on direct! |
