Any ideas on how to get control over the front door again. |
|
Let me know if you figure it out! Mine are out of control with the door as well. |
I never answer the front door unless the dogs are under control. Begin by removing them to a designated spot BEFORE you open the door. Too many dogs can dart out the door in the excitement and run into the street.
Once they get used to the routine they will take it upon themselves to go where they belong, or you can add the command go to place. |
Mulligan's crate is right near the door. When we get to the door (and him!) we tell him to go into his crate, and he does.
Of course in all other situations, when we tell him to go I to his crate he is immediately rewarded with a treat. This approach did not work well with Jake, we had to lead him into his crate manually. |
There is that show on animal planet with Victoria Stillwell. She demonstrates how to control the dogs at the front door. She does the wait command and multiple attempts of people coming in and knocking on the door. I cant remember all of the steps but you might try searching the internet for her. It seems to work well and I noticed others on this site thought good of her training methods. |
Cesar Milan has also addressed this often. Basically, don't answer until dog settles. You are in command and must not become anxious. Practice, practice, practice with friends or family helping.
With these two tv trainers, know you are in good company, it's a common problem. |
