Congratulations!
For the drop on recall, you can start closer, in fact you teach the drop itself up close (and this is where the sphinx down comes in real handy for speed, plus it looks really cool! ) but always reward him by throwing the cookie (or toy) BEHIND him as you release him to get his reward. You'll be amazed how quickly they learn that there's no point in travelling to you to get their reward which means you'll quickly be able to transition him to dropping further away and faster. Most dogs love this game. After you have a reliable drop at a distance, you add the last part of the exercise (calling him to you after the drop) Intermittently, you work just the drop at a distance to keep him from starting to creep back in. To work on the distance part, I will often start the exercise by throwing a cookie out, waiting till they grab it, then as they turn to come back to you, which they inevitably will, you give your drop command. That way you aren't stuck doing a formal set-up each time. This is an exercise that lends itself really well to be broken into small pieces and then pieced together. Oh, and cheese balls work really well for me since they're orange (visible) and they roll (movement). Those crunchy snack ones that come in different sizes. Anyway, well done! Are you planning on continuing on? Kristine |
