this will be my first oes, i have had other large breeds before but think its time for the "softer" dog. my little fella is deaf, which i dont consider a problem, i always used hand signals with my other dogs, even though they could hear me. my burning question at the moment is about the coat, i dont mind grooming one bit, i find it very calming (for me). but i do like the shorter styles, is it true that having the dog clipped can upset his internal thermostat? during my research i found so many conflicting articles i dont know what to believe. i live in the uk, not know for too warm weather, and i wont be putting him in any shows (he's not upto that standard) |
|
Don't worry about it. If you like your sheeper in a shorter coat, they'll be fine. Only cautions would be too very short and sun burn, but you did say you are in the UK, so no biggie there. Second is the undercoat. Don't groom it out ; (1) it keeps the fluffy and (2) it provides insulation in winter.
Your climate doesn't hit extremes so I think you'll be fine. Hopefully you've learned there's a point where puppy coat is changing over to adult coat that might drive you to drink......or other vices. Realize it's only for a few months........of mats, knots, etc. You and your pup will survive. 10 weeks out and you already know you'll have a deaf baby? Hmmm, let's hear (no pun) more about that. |
i have been told by the rescue centre he is deaf........ could they be wrong? i dont know what tests they have done, they also found a heart murmur which is less than grade one, so no worries.
what age are they normally diagnosed? would be lovely if he wasnt deaf, obviously |
Congrats on the new pup.....
We pretty much always keep our dogs in a short coat! We have two deaf dogs. One they knew he was deaf I believe around 6 weeks. The other baby I don't know when they knew. |
How old is your pup...or will he be when you get him? If young, the heart condition may stabilize as he matures. Unfortunately sheepies are being born deaf. I'm not going to voice my opinion on this..........
You can't really tell until a pup is 2 weeks old or older. Then the breeder may watch for clues...like not responding to sounds like the other litter mates. At that point a pup can be tested. You realize a deaf pup will not receive the same "instructions" from his littermates because he can't hear...........a "Yip" or other puppy sound stating displeasure in puppy play, being stepped on, etc is completely lost on the deaf pup. So you'll have find other ways to convey displeasure with your pup other than Yelping. Still, deaf or not, welcome to the world of sheepdogs and do let us know when the fluffly bundle arrives! |
Hi Charlysez.
Just like to say that i my fingers are crossed that your homecheck goes ok . I think i know which pup it is and he is gorgeous . I was seriously thinking about him but the distance he is from me is a bit too long for me to travel. As for the coat Marley is cut down to a puppy cut 3 times a year with no problems. Keep us informed and welcome to the forum. Julianne and Marls |
wow thats really spooky, on an american site, and you know my dog LOL
i will pm you if you dont mind |
no i don't mind |
Congrats on your new puppy and welcome!
There are many people on here with deaf dog experience, so you will get plenty of help. Lots of good online stuff out there too. |
Oooh... I hope you'll be a match for each other. I've never had the pleasure of living with a deaf dog but we had prepared to bring one into our pack about 5 years ago.
This is a great website on raising a deaf dog- http://www.DeafDogs.org This was my favorite website for choosing signs. http://www.lifeprint.com As soon as he arrives, begin desensitizing him to reduce his startle reflex. http://deafdogs.org/training/#desensitization It's often mandatory to have a fenced yard so they have a safe place to play because you have no verbal recall. Deaf... blind... they're still dogs. You make some adjustments in training and lifestyle that become second nature. You come to forget that there's any difference between them and a "normal" dog. And there's one less detraction when it comes to training. You'll get a lot of good information from the people here who actually live with deaf dogs. I hope you'll post pictures soon. |
Our deaf dogs have No idea they are deaf!
My first deaf gal we got when she was around six and she woud startle a bit... Our deaf pups now are 19months and 14 months... We totally work with them on touch. Which we have done since day 1 that we have had them.. I rub them, rub the toes, the ears...when they wake up it is a slow stretch! Deaf dogs are very in tune with people... Good Luck with your new pup and please feel free to contact me or any others if you have questions!!! |
thank you everyone, i will let you know when he arrives, and i feel better with so much support behind me. |
I am all excited for you now. I am sure you will be great with the pup and there are lots of folks on here to help you with any problems..xx |

In the process Kathy ,In the Process.
Pups round here are like rocking horse Poop I am on 2 lists and enquiring about a 3rd as i type. Cappi in full flight |
I am very excited for you
Maybe your new baby and Cappi can have a play date!! It is so good for them to meet others and especially with Cappi being deaf he needs to learn early to play nice with others. One thing to be careful with is when Cappi bites down on another dogs ears(or whatever he chooses to bite on)...he can not hear the other dog whine which typically would stop the bite.(well, most of the time) I have thought of a vibrating collar to make that correction but, we made it though Most important Lesley watch out!!! These will get ya |
WOW! What a cutie pie!!! |
He is totally gorgeous! |
