scissor trim

I am a little confused by the last post which talked about scissor trims. I would like to try this but am unsure as to where to start. Bella is just growing out from a shave and her coat is 2-3 inches long now. Someone mentioned shaving the tummy to keep her cool and trim the inside hind legs a little closer. Any tips for a newbie :?

I believe that was me.

I used the electric clippers and shave Chewie under the belly - up front to between the front legs and into the armpits, then keep going in a "stripe" down his belly and privates and groin and down the inner parts of his hind legs to the stifle area. Then use the scissors to blend the edges into the rest of the hair.
I do this with him laying on his side. I usually wait until I have a helper to hold the legs on the upper side up, then flip him to the other side and do the same. It just takes a couple minutes that way.

I do this after I have the rest of his body scissored - easier to see what I want to save and not save.

Sounds like the body is short on Bella, so maybe just needing a tummy shave now?
Or if you feel adventurous, it would be easy to trim off an inch all over w/ the scissors - maybe a good starting point. :D
the hair around her bum is longer than that on her back and her coat along the chest and neck seems longer as well. When I scissor trim should I for now just trim those areas and blend them in slowly?? I have just been using a pin brush and wasn't sure if I should rake the under coat along the neck area and chest. It just seems a lot bulkier in those areas.

You really can do whatever you want. :D You may notice there are tons of styles of OES trims in our pictures, that is the fun of having the hair!

When I trimmed Chewie initially, I wasn't really ready to let go of all of the "show look", so he still has longer parts in the parts that would be longer. If I fluff him now, I get a shorter version of his show coat. So, he is trimmed kind of like a pear shape - shorter in the front, longer (graduated) from mid-ribs to the rear and still has the "show butt" trim.

I need to strip out more chest/shoulder coat - it is on my "to do" list tonight after work. I need to do a good line comb after we went sledding twice this week (harness rubbing = mats if not brushed out) When he was shorter it wasn't a problem, but he is getting pretty shaggy now. And way too hairy in the front. He will look better and be cooler when I thin it out w/ the stripper.
I'll try and take some pictures.
i clip billies belly and the insiside of his hind legs, but thats to stop all the mud no so much the heat. i use a 3f on his belly and a 7f on his legs. but i find if you shave the belly around the edges where the hair is longer is does matt up more. so just be attentive on those areas.
there are many tools you can get for your dog. main ones being a good pair of scissors, some like straight, some like curved. i like the curved ones. i also use a pair of chunkers, these are like thinners but with bigger teeth. i think any kind of thinners can hide a multitude of sins as they leave more of a natural finish rather than a straight cut, but its also alot more scissoring. also a coat king is great for getting out the undercoat, or a good rake. and the good old matt breaker for breaking down the matts. if you are showing your dog then that is another thing all together!
as for the rear.. that can be whatever you want it to be! i thin billies bum just near his tail, his only got a stump of 3" but at least he has a tail. then i grow the bob and keep it round.
if your dog will let it do their legs lol... then brush/comb it to the side and trim, then the front, then the other side and then the back, make a box shape and them trim the corners if you know what i mean.
give yourself 2 days the first time you do it so if its any quicer its a bonus!
lots of breaks and treats so they enjoy it.
