Video/Photo essay on Shaving down an OES?

March tends to be very, very wet and muddy in my area. Both my OES are in full coat now. Once the rains come, I would like to shave down their bodies and keep their faces fuzzy - sort of a "Dandelion Cut" if you will.

I have an Andis clipper and currently a size 10 blade (though I need more sizes).

I contemplated scissoring them, but Wendel will only let me groom him for an hour and then he takes off. Asterisk likes to sleep, and I don't think I could get her to stand that long.

Should I start at the legs? Chest? Should I change out blades? How long can a clipper run before I have to worry about burns? Does anyone have photos so I can see how to do this? Do I shave with the growth of hair?

Help!

if you are after 2-3" put your clippers away. even with a attachment comb the will only go upto an inch and for that they have to be completely matt free. but if you do clip, start behind the ears
if you are going to hand scissor...
imagine there is a strap going from shoulder to shoulder a few inches wide. on the strap area put the hair into peaks, a bit like a heart beat monitor. then scissor the hair round at the required length, then go to the next few inches of hair, and do the same and so on.
if you can only groom for an hour here and there you can always get him while he is asleep.
i was shown this method from a pomeranian breeder, yeah smaller version but it works!
I would really love to scissor the dogs, I think the look looks wonderful, I'm just not sure how patient they will be with the process. I guess since it is just clipping and not brushing, it wouldn't be as bad.

Any suggestions on how to get to the legs? Asterisk acts like Mim's Tiggy and absorbs her legs completely under her. I don't know how long I can get them to stand.
Here is Hattie

Inthedoghouse did her for me!!! She looks lovely!!! she was scissor cut too :)thank you!!!
How long does it take to scissor? I would think it would be a few hours. Hattie looks beautiful by the way, like a big plush stuffed animal!
Oh, I wish MO had that much hair to stand out and be fluffy! Jack, no problem, but little old MO-No undercoat girl has hair like her upright Mum, thin and straight.

Lovely scissor job.

I let Clyde lie down until I actually need him to stand. Do you have a table with an arm?

If you use a 10 blade and shave to the skin, you can get through a whole dog in a decent time. If you choose a blade like a 3 3/4 or a 4, which leaves you a lot more hair (closer to a half an inch), it takes some time-- like several hours or more, especially if you're not experienced at shaving (like me!). It's a much slower process.

Whatever blade you pick, always go with the grain of the hair. If you get two of the same blade, you can swap the blades when they get too hot. The spray blade coolant stuff just gums them up so you're better off changing them. I store my blades right in Dip 'N' Clip solution (http://www.whitmansharpening.com/dipnclip.html) and change the solution after a shave since it gets pretty gross by that time.
LeAnne clips Martha, and she goes at it in stages. After the 1st overall clip, she gets bathed (Maybe not the same day). Then a 2nd clip to get the tufts that appear. Of course brush before each trim.
She hand scissors the head and feet.

I scissored Chewie by hand after he finished. It was my 1st ever attempt at the whole dog (just did show trimming before). It took most of the day, if you count the 1st scissor (I had him brushed out, was just waiting for AKC confirmation of his CH), then a bath and dry, then rescissor. I would guess about 6 hours total, with a few breaks for both of us.
I had him stand on the table - he is very used to it and can stay there quite awhile. It was easier on him than the show grooming, so he did real well.

The transformation from show dog to a more comfortable performance dog:

He is longer now, I have done 2 trims since the 1st cut, I'm still modifying my technique!
i allow 4-5 hours for an old english clip or scissor. thats with a brush and bath and lots of breaks. but thats also with practise.
set yourself a section that you can do in an hour. try to have a break before the dog wants a break, then go back and continue. lots of treats and talking to. give yourself a day or two to finish it.
as for the front legs, thats just one of the wonders of the world.... how to groom a sheepies front legs!
you should use clipper oil. the coolent spray really doesnt work. try using a ceramic tile to cool your blades quicker. put the balde one the back of your hand to feel how hot they are.

thank you kim x
just thought i'd mention that since neither of mine would stand for grooming or bathing other than at pro groomers on the table. my wife had a large l bracket for hanging plants on the patio and it quickly became handy for nice weather brushing and bathing. you could also install one inside easily.

You probably need to get either an assistant or a grooming arm. :D Tiggy still absorbs her legs to become the old english turtle and she wont stand for me either. I ask Wayne to help keep her standing sometimes but he is less patient than Tiggy and keeps asking "are you done yet?"

Lisa and I sometimes swap. Well I hold Tiggy or Babs or Syd in a stand while Lisa works some magic with the scissors. Apparently Lisa's DH has about as much patience as Wayne.
someone put on a different forum once to put a crate under the dog to stop it lying down!
that'll work if they're not the jump off a bridge type to get outta groomin. ;-)
or if there just really lazy!
Sooooo, can anyone help me with different blades? What the heck is the difference between a skip-tooth blade and a standard blade? When would you use a skip-tooth?

And also, what's the difference between finishing blades, ceramic blades and steel blades?

I really have a lot to learn!
I've found this website really helpful in understanding what blade is used for what:
