Over the next month we get to build a barrel-stave wooden hot tub as our class project I am super excited! We have wanted a tub from these folks: http://www.kachemakcooperage.com/ for ages, and were thrilled when we saw that they were offering a "do-it-yourself" class. unfortunately, I am a bit intimidated by the complexity of our project (a 3 person hot tub) and the fact that all of the other students seem to be large, burly, male engineers and contractors ...but, Scott and I are working together on one project, so I think Ill be ok Tonight was mostly a math exercise, as we figured out how to calculate how much wood we needed, and how many staves to cut. Anyway, wish me luck...Im hoping to come out of this with all my fingers still in place, a really neat new creative skill, and a beautiful tub to soak in. Ill take pics as we start actually building something. There may even be a sheepdog in them, as Bert has been invited to hang out in the shop to keep the owner/instructer's dog company |

That sounds fun - how cool does that house look on their webpage...just looks like a big barrel! |
If the hot tub doesn't come out perfect, you can always put it out on the front lawn on its side and put some serious flowers in it.
Have fun!!! |
That sounds like a really really cool thing to do, I can't wait to see some pictures of your finished project. |
I don't know if making i sounds like fun but using it does. I'm so impressed with the fact you guys are trying to do it yourself. |
Good luck! The tub sounds like a great project. Just remember to have fun. |
So Cool!! I wish I could find something different like that around here.
Can't wait for the pictures. |
You go girl!!! Learning new things is great!! |

That's exactly what it is! Coopering is barrel-making. The techniques we are learning are very old traditional ones using no glue or nails of any kind...just wood cut to fit very precisely, and metal bands to tighten. Ron: eek! dont even say that! I soooo dont want to wind up with a huge (expensive!) flowerpot If it wont hold water, maybe we'll add a door and a side and make it the world's most claustrophobic sauna...? The instructor did say he had kinda hoped the class would vote to build saunas, since that is apparently easier. Two of the students are even planning on building (welding) their own stoves (heaters)!!! That, to me, is perhaps taking the "do-it-yourself bit a little far. |
Oohhh! that sounds fun. I am enough of a history freak that I even knew what coopering was
Please take step by step pictures. I think it will be a whole lot of fun! |
