Pearl, my 14 year old OES started getting up slowly a couple of months ago. I took her to the vet and was told she had spondolosis (prob. misp). Vet suggested trying glucosomine to see if we could keep her off stronger meds and it is working great!!!! Pear is a petite size only about 65 poounds so I really think her being slim and smaller is making it easier on her..Good Luck and keep us posted... |
Yes, this is the age arthritis begins to show....hip/back. Previous ignored injuries tend to catch up in later life....just as in us.
You might discuss with your vet the various Glucosamine formulations on the market to see if that helps. Aso ask about mild pain relievers and other alternative treatments such as acupuncture. Water therapy might rebuild muscle mass thus taking pressure off degenerating joints. Your pup may indeed have HD even though the breeder has worked to eliminate it from the line.......it still happens. Xray to determine arthritis would be a good idea. |
Johnc3 wrote: Our OES Roxy is 8.5 years old. Spayed female, about 72 pounds. In the past two months, really fairly suddenly, she has started having difficulty getting up, has to scramble on the hardwood floor and is slow even on carpet. She seems to be walking and running ok and doesn't whine with pain (do dogs whine when their joints hurt?). She is heading to the vet tomorrow but I'm concerned of course about hip dysplasia (she comes from an outstanding Northern California breeder and was screened for this as a puppy we know).
It does sound like arthritis, but it could be an injury or an organ issue - when Morgan has a pancreatitis attack he has the same symptoms. It also can be due to tick borne illnesses. I am not sure how puppies are screened for CHD, two year olds can get x-rayed for skeletal issues, but nothing rules out CHD setting in later, although it is less likely with a two year old that was screened and rated to have excellant or good hips - not impossible though as I understand it. It really sound slike a vet visit is in order. |
Our 10 y.o. girl has pretty bad arthritis in her back, (had it much longer than we realized) but she is now on the wonder drug called Zubrin. Expensive, but well worth the money. She's like a puppy again with how active she is. |
A lot of time they start to get arthritis in their lower back area. You will notice it most when she gets up or sits down... On mine, I usually notice them sitting alot slower moreso than in getting up. Sorta like they are trying to find the most comfortable (or least painful) way to sit down. |
Most dogs don't whine from minor chronic pain. They may lick their forepaws or ignore it completely until it gets stronger. I had one guy with an extremely high pain threshhold and he never complained about any pain. I heard him yelp only twice in 10 years and it was doing a split on the kitchen floor.
A TEST OF PAIN MEDS ARE IN ORDER -- if you start the pain meds and he perks up, you can guess that you're on to something. I'd continue them for some time then discontinue to see if it was a temporary issue. Something to be on the lookout for while on the pain meds is excessive thrist/urination (or urination accidents). Ask your vet for what else you should be watching. |
